Time To Wrap Things UpWinter 2014
I have tried in my other articles to articulate how as a profession we need to be aware of our professional legacy, as well as remembering those times we needed help along our professional journey. What are we doing as a profession to lift up our legacy? What are we as individuals doing? As the leaves change and winter wind starts to blow, I challenge each of us to make a reso-lution for the New Year to start, continue, and increase the work we do to improve our profession. Donate a little more, volun-teer a little more, show compassion a little more. Just flip through the pages of this Dateline, and you will find so many ways to help. If each of us works to do this, we will not only as a group help so many, we will be forever brightening the legacy we inherited for the next generations of dental profes-sionals.
As I find myself reflecting on my year as President of IDDS. One word comes to mind, thankful. I have tried to express my thanks to all of you for being involved in organized dentistry. There are many chal-
lenges and changes our profession has seen, and will continue to see in the future. It is only through active participation in orga-nized dentistry, that we will have a voice strong enough to guide our profession through these changes. Without this unified vision and voice, it will be left up to oth-ers to chart our course. We can do better. I would like to express to all of you who actively participate in IDDS, the IDA and the ADA, thank you for being involved.
As a component, we are very lucky to have such great committee members and volunteers. The real work of IDDS happens at this level. The member who volunteers to help set up our general membership meet-ings, the volunteer who sits on the peer review committee, the volunteer who helps run our Foundation fundraisers, the mem-ber who stepped up and is in charge of the upcoming MOMs program with the IDA, and on and on. There are so many examples, some visible, some behind the scenes, of IDDS members volunteering for the good of the organization. Thanks to all of my fellow board members, committee members, and volunteers who make IDDS great.
We are also very lucky as a component to have the best staff around. Thank you to Sarah who has picked up more and more responsibility this year and done a terrific job. And a special thanks to Carolyn who makes all of us look good. The hours she puts in and organizational excellence she possesses makes her one of a kind. She even talks her family into helping out! She is one of the most respected Executive Directors in the nation, and we should all be proud of the work she does for IDDS.

ARE YOU READY? by ThAD MillER, ddsmatch.comDental Practice sales are predicted to increase in the coming years as Boomers decide to transition their practice and enjoy retirement. Are you prepared for that time?
When a man does not knoW Which harbor he is heading for, no Wind is the right Wind. --SenecaThe starting point for any type of plan is defining its goals. In the case of planning a business exit that means knowing what it means to exit your business in style.
Philosophers, business owners, and successful people from all walks of life understand the critical importance of establishing goals, creating plans to attain those goals, and persevering to see their plans through to completion.
Having worked with dentists to create over 60 successful exits, we know that it is critical that you establish three principal exit objectives first before moving forward with your Exit Plan. This is the first step in The Trusted Transition Process. I titled it the Conceptual Transition Expe-rience We help visualize your future, set achievable goals and devise strategies to start you in the direction of your post-transition dreams, well in advance of your intended transition timeframe.
The three main points in this first step are:
How much cash do you need when you exit to support the lifestyle you desire? (Do you want to be cashed out when you leave the business or are you willing to receive the purchase price over time?)
When do you want to leave the practice? (Or, how much longer are you willing to remain active in the practice?)
To whom do you want to sell / transfer the practice? (To a child? An associate? Co-owner? Or perhaps to an outside practitioner who can pay top dollar?)
lets look at an example of a dentist who arrived at his exit date without a plan to reach his goals.
Dr. Y, the owner of a successful dental practice had long thought of transferring his business to a certain young dentist from his community. He and his family were long time patients, he mentored him on his decision to go to dental school and stayed in touch with him during his education. This was ideal in theory but unfortunately, he had done little to prepare for that transfer. As tougher economic conditions challenged his practice, however, and he reached his 58th birthday, he decided it was time to retire and called me.
My response after thorough discussions with he and his financial team was Doctor its helpful that youve established two of the three Exit Ob-jectives critical to all successful business exits. Youve determined that you dont want to work much longer in the business. And second, you have decided that you want to transfer the business to the young dental student who is graduating soon.
But what about the third Exit Objective: how much money do you want or need when you leave the business? And, have you determined
whether you need cash or can you accept a promissory note?
at this point, dr. Y had two choices:
He could retire immediately and try to market the practice through ddsmatch but unfortunately not to this young dentist from the commu-nity. The young dentist had no dental practice experience and no bank would lend an amount even close to the amount of money necessary to meet Dr. Ys expectations. If Dr. Y wanted to sell today and receive an amount that would support his post-exit lifestyle, he would have to sell to an outside dentist with sufficient cash.
Dr. Y could sell the company to this young dentist from his community, but wait six to ten years to receive (hopefully) the entire purchase price. This can work, but it has to match the Exit Objectives of the seller.
Dr. Ys situation illustrates why setting your objectives or goals, under-standing how each affects the other, creating a plan, and then acting to reach those goals is so critical to a successful exit.
If you prefer to leave your business in style (which to us means leaving your business to the successor you choose, on your timetable and with the amount of cash you desire) you must take time to formulate specific, consistent, attainable goals and objectives. Either option detailed above is an option, but talking about it now is critical to prepare.
You must determine a course of actiona planbased upon those goals, and you must hold to that action till the goal is reached. The key is ac-tion. Without setting goals at the outset of your exit journey, you may drift aimlessly until, like Dr. Y, its too late.
Dont be a dentist who is too busy working in your practice to work on the most important financial event of your business life. We work in tandem with your financial advisors, CPA, attorneys and others to help you get the best out of your transition for you, your staff and your patients. We are happy to help you begin by providing you with more information about setting objectives and other Exit Planning topics through The Trusted Transition Process. It all starts with a complimentary confidential discussion.

Member News
In Memoriam: IDDS sends its condolences
to the family of:
Congratulations to: Dr. Stacey Scheff-Rochman, a mem-
ber of the IDDS Membership Committee, who married Brad Rochman on August 31 in Buffalo, New York. They honeymooned in Hawaii. The couple are in the process of selecting a new home. Best wishes to both of them in their new life together.
Dr. John McLaughlin, Jr., who passed away on August 29, 2014 at the age of 84. Dr. McLaughlin was a 52 year member of IDDS.
Dr. Karen Cottingham, and her husband Gene (center) have a band called Sympathy for the Fingers. (Shes the sing-er!). They performed at parties and asked every guest to bring gift cards to be donated to Sheltering Wings, a shelter for domestic abuse. Dr. Cottingham says they have a lot of fun doing this, and ask their audience to support local charities instead of paying the band. Thanks, Dr. Cottingham, what a happy tune that must be to sing!!
Dr. Gabrielle Caron, and her husband, Jeremy, welcome baby Giselle Michaela Caron on August 4 at 8lbs 2oz. Dr. Caron still finds time to be Co-Chair of the IDDS Membership Committee. Best wishes to the Carons on their new life as parents!
Drs. Karen Ellis, Heather Maupin and Renee Shirer inducted as Fellows into the International College of Dentistry at the ADA meeting in San Antonio.
