School Leaders
Last Friday, the Year 6 students who nominated for the Head Girl and Head Boy positions, gave speeches to their peers outlining why they would like to be elected. Following this, the election was held and I am pleased to announce to the school community that our new Head Girl for 2020 is Ella Colbung and our new Head Boy is Brayden Nu. Congratulations to Ella and Bray-den. I am sure that they will both prove to be terrific role models to our students as well as excellent school leaders.
NAPLAN Online
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will again be completed online by Year 3 and 5 students this year. The only test which will not be completed online is Year 3 writing. This will be done on paper. In order for parents to become familiar with the materials and how they are pre-sented, below is the link to the website with access to sample tests.
https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
The testing period this year is from May 12th
- 22nd
. This is the 3rd
and 4th weeks of
Term 2. Further information about NAPLAN will be sent home to parents of Year 3 and 5 students as it becomes available.
Early Arrivals Supervision is only provided to students in the undercover area in the mornings between 8:00am - 8:30am. If it is necessary for your child to be at school before this time, please consider using Helping Hands which is the on-site before and after school care provider. Smart Watches In the previous newsletter I informed you of the mo-bile phone ban in all West Australian public schools which came into effect at the beginning of term. Please note that this ban also includes watches which have SIM cards and are capable of being used for phone calls and internet access. These should also be handed in at the front office in the morning and collected at the end of the day. Medication If your child requires medication during the school day, a form must be completed and signed authorising this. These forms are available at the front office. Medica-tion is to be dropped off at the office where it will be stored securely until the end of the day. Kind regards John Gillett Principal 20/3/2020

Happy New Year of the Rat. Wishing you all the best.
Friday 7th February, students and staff members from Beckenham Primary School were entertained by the
sound of drums, cymbals, gongs and the lion dancers from Yaolin Kung Fu Association. Many lucky students
also received lollies and mandarins from the lions mouth which symbolises good fortune and prosperity.
The Lion Dance is a form of Chinese traditional dance usually performed on big occasions such as the Spring
Festival 春

Thank you to Yaolin Kung Fu Association for the fantastic performance.
VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS AND SPELLING MASTERY Spelling Mastery will commence Week 5 (beginning March). Please ensure that we have received
your payment in the office. Please note, Voluntary Contributions for 2020 from Kindergarten to Year 6
are $50 per student. These charges represent $1.25 per week contribution to your child’s education.
Voluntary Contributions for our school are contained with the $60 maximum amount per child set down
in the School Education Regulations 2000. The quality of our teaching and learning program is maxim-
ised when each family makes its contribution to the cost of supplementing funds gained from other
sources, including the State and Commonwealth Governments. The level of our Voluntary Contribu-
tions and charges is approved by our School Board and is one of the cheapest in this district.

HELPING HANDS NETWORK-
BECKENHAM
National Apology Day
The Helping Hands Beckenham Team celebrated this event on 13th February 2020 at our ser-
vice. It marks the anniversary of the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous people in the House of Representatives on 13 February 2008 by former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, apologising for past laws, policies and practices that have impacted on Australia’s First Nations Peoples, partic-ularly members of the Stolen Generations. Several activities were planned around this theme and children were provided with some history of this day.
Weekly Program
The children and educators have been engaged in a huge variety of active and passive games and activities throughout this fortnight. The laser maze and Cricket were SUPER hit. Children helped educators setting up the laser challenge and played cricket game both in the mornings and afternoons. Children enjoyed doing a variety of craft activities, pretend play in the home cor-ner and fashion show, the icy-poles in the shapes of dinosaur, treasure-casket, fruits and train engines were a great success too since every child enjoyed eating these healthy icy-poles made from yoghurt and fruit.
Safety Discussions and Drill
On everyday basis we discussed with children some safety tips. For example, Fire Safety, Stranger Danger, Water Safety and safety around house etc. A fire drill was also conducted to
practice the safety steps. For any inquiry please contact Coordinator (Shivaya) on 0478 398 270 Email: beckenham@helpinghandsnetwork.com.au
