Victoria, Australia, 13 km south-west
rom Melbourne’s central business
district. Its Local Government Area is theCity o Hobsons Bay. Altona takes its name
rom the then independent German city o
Altona, which is today a borough o Hamburg.
It is a large suburb consisting o low density
residences in the south-eastern hal, with
mixed industry in the north-western hal. It
is located in Zone 1 and has three train stations
Seaholme, Altona and Westona stations.
It is home to our primary schools, two
secondary schools, many sport clubs, a
historical museum (Altona Homestead),
Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre and
Altona City Theatre. Its most eminent residentis Julia Gillard, the frst emale Prime Minister

beaches in Melbourne Western Suburb,

Altona BeachTe Esplanade is the only road in Metropolitan
Melbourne that runs so close to the beach and sea. Avery long coastline hugs Altona.
Tere is a very long drive rom the western end at Maidstone St to the Altona Coastal Park at the eastern end. Tis is a very scenic drive and you cansee the curve o the shoreline, the Pier, Melbourne CBD and mountain ranges

Altona Beach had recently undergone beachimprovement works in which a 40 metre wide beach
was constructed rom Romawi Street to BayviewStreet, placing approximately 75,000 m³ o sand on
the beach. Te project restores the width o the beach,minimise sand drit, improve the stormwater drainsand water quality, enhance the recreational experi-ence or visitors and make beach maintenance easier.

Tis is a large lake with an island inside, has a 3.7km shared walking and bicycle path that encirclesthe lake that will take about 1 and an hal hour o walking time.
It is accessible by cars rom the Millers Rd carparkas well as rom the end o Fresno St rom Civic Parade.
Te lake and associated salt marsh vegetationprovides habitat or pelicans, black swans, PurpleSwamphens and the endangered Altona SkipperButtery.
Aquatic birds can be viewed rom a bird hide atthe north-western end, where tall sedge grasses
abound which orm a beautiul, fowing silky patternwhen winds blow.
Recreational activities on the lake include boating,windsurng, angling and remote-controlled modelboat racing. Te walk/cycling path is connected tothe Hobsons Bay Coastal rail.
Tere is a big barbeque/picnic area near the
Millers Road carpark, a children playground nearby,a skating park and a boardwalk that runs throughthe tall sedges.
Te undulating, well-manicured grasselds withmajestic-looking trees on the southern shores o theLake makes an idyllic, picturesque spot or picnics.

I you drive south along Millers Road towards Altona, you will eventually
see a very large, beautiul lake on the right. This is Cherry Lake.
Cherry Lake, ormally the Altona Swamp was named ater Robert
Cherry who was a local armer and landowner in the late 1800’s. In
the 1970’s the basin was created to help prevent Altona rom fooding.

The Altona Coastal Park is a 70 hectares
intertidal and salt marsh orming
the eastern boundary o Altona.
It provides habitats or a large
biodiversity o fora and auna, including
the rare Orange-bellied Parrot, White
Mangroves and many marine birds.

Te park is carpeted with large areas o pigacewhich blooms in late October, resulting in swatheso pink fowers – a phenomenal sight! In Spring,certain parts o the Park become a meadow o yellowwildowers.
It was ormerly the site o the WilliamstownRacecourse, where a lone date palm tree, rising out o the at landscape andsome ruins o the grandstand are reminders o its nineteenth century grandeur.
A 4-metre sculpture called Requiem or a Champion, created by the artist Yvonne George, eaturing a bronze Stint perched on top o a galloping horse,was installed as a historical marker to commemorate the location o this oncethird largest racecourse in Victoria, graced by Australian thoroughbred cham-
pions, including Phar Lap.
Te Lower Kororoit Creek meanders through the Altona Coastal Park andempties into Port Phillip Bay, adjacent to the Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve.Te Jawbone Reserve consists o a sandy beach fanked by basalt rock outcrops.
A wooden boardwalk enables visitors to approach the water, rockpools, yellow
lichen and the saltmarsh-mangrove community. Huge colonies o aquatic birdsock to rocky outcrops located in the centre o a wetland l agoon. Seagrasses,kelp orests, mussels, abalones and rock lobster can be ound in the JawboneMarine Sanctuary.
Te Lower Kororoit Creek is interrupted in itscourse by a train bridge (Werribee train line) anda road that is submerged under water during hightides and hence, not usable by cars. You can otensee black swans bobbing up and down along thisstretch o the Creek.
During low tides, the sea water retreats a very
long distance rom the shore, exposing the sea bedsand temporarily creating islands in the sea, whichare sand ridges at a much higher elevation thanthose closer to the shores. Tis is a avourite time ordog owners to unleash their dogs there. Tese dogswill run ree on the exposed sea beds and “islands”,chasing each other.

service clubs and a host o recreational organisations.

It was initiated by a group o local residents whowanted to promote the recreational opportunitiesofered by sporting clubs, groups and service clubswithin the City o Altona (now known as HobsonsBay). Te 30thanniversary was held in 2007.
It enjoyed a brie period o heightened promi-
nence in 2002 when it was eatured on the Channel9 travel program Postcards in a segment hosted byGeof Cox.
Te activities are spread out rom Logan Reserve,Pier Street, J.K. Grant Reserve and Cherry Lake.Tey include concerts, perormances by proessionalentertainers, pet shows, an antique car exhibition, aspaghetti eating competition, showcasing o artists’works rom the western suburbs at the Louis Joel
Arts & Community Centre, children’s workshopswhere they learn how to create handicrats using
recycled materials, bloke’s activities such as sports,gizmos and carpentry at the Finnish Hall, handmade
The Altona Bayside Festival is the most important annual event in the calendar
o Altona’s activities. It is held annually, over a weekend in March, to promote
and celebrate Hobsons Bay and the western suburbs. Formerly known as ‘Operation
Recreation’, the Bayside Festival began in March 1977 ater th e opening o Cherry Lake.
