two aims have always been at the heart of the Glyndebourne Tour: to present world-class affordable opera for audiences throughout the country; and to provide a showcase for talented young artists.

In 2012 some exciting initiatives take these core ambitions to a new level. Building on our central offering of exceptional productions on the main stage, we will be extending the Tour programme to include performances of chamber works and cinema screenings of Glyndebourne Festival productions.

The Yellow Sofa is an engaging new chamber opera by Glyndebourne’s first Composer-in-Residence, Julian Philips and will be performed by some of our most gifted choristers. Cinema screenings in many of our touring locations will allow us to show you more of our work, and I am delighted that in 2012 we will screen David McVicar’s acclaimed production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare starring Sarah Connolly and Danielle de Niese.

Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro has played a central role in our history since the very beginning of the Glyndebourne Festival, back in 1934. This new production, directed by Michael Grandage, will transfer direct from this year’s Festival to the 2012 Tour.

Accompanying this, and touring for the first time will be Melly Still’s magical production of Dvorak’s Rusalka, conducted by Tour Music Director Jakub Hrůša.

These new developments for the Glyndebourne Tour have been made possible by renewed support from Arts Council England, who share our ambition to present high-quality opera to as many people as possible. Their recognition of Glyndebourne’s innovative education work in engaging with young people and attracting new audiences has allowed us to increase the number of schools’ matinee performances across the country. We are also able to offer a number of discounted tickets to encourage families to attend (see page 10 for further details).

We are also very grateful to the Daily Mail who are continuing their generous sponsorship of the Tour, allowing us to offer a much greater range of tickets prices for all our touring work and giving vital support to make the new cinema programme a reality.

the entire action of Mozart’s life-enhancing opera takes place within a single day; a day of madness as the subtitle of the original text describes it. Figaro and Susanna’s determination to marry enrages their master, the Count, reducing him to a state of lustful frustration, disregarding his wife, the Countess, who is left to suffer the miseries of unrequited love. In a breathless circle of plots and counter-plots, the Count pursues Susanna, the young and hormonally volcanic Cherubino pursues anything in a skirt and the scheming pair of Bartolo and Marcellina come close to upsetting Figaro’s plans but are caught in a web of their own devising.

Conceived by the brilliantly scurrilous writer Beaumarchais in 1784 as a barbed satire on the aristocracy, the original play was repeatedly banned from performance in the years leading up to the French Revolution. It was considered to be dangerously incendiary and to Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte it proved irresistible, inspiring them to create an opera of unrivalled beauty and acutely perceptive characterisation.

Transferring direct from the 2012 Festival, this is a new production from celebrated director Michael Grandage, returning to Glyndebourne following his critically acclaimed Billy Budd (2010).

entwining elements of a number of familiar fairy stories from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid and Slavic myths of lake and forest spirits, to the French tale of Undine, this opera is both fantastical and painfully human.

Dvořák’s richly expressive music conjures up a world of dark forests and deep lakes. The water spirit Rusalka falls hopelessly in love with the Prince who comes daily to swim in the lake where she lives. He cannot see her and her only chance of becoming visible to him and of entering the human world is to make a terrible pact with Ježibaba

the witch. She gives up her own world and loses the power of speech in exchange for the chance to experience the pain and joy of human love.

Profoundly alien both to the rough, uncomprehending servants at the Prince’s court, and to the socially superior courtiers who surround him, Rusalka cannot thrive. Ignored by the Prince, who betrays her for the Foreign Princess, she is forced back to the lake but can no longer find refuge there either. She forgives the Prince with a final passionate kiss, but Rusalka has loved and lost – for her there can be no redemption.

The Yell ow Sofajulian philips with a libretto by edward kemp

this is a story of love and loss, of betrayal and deception, of sex and a city, of wounded pride and attempted retribution – of plumply inviting sofa cushions.

Godofredo is naturally indolent, adequately successful in his working life and quite happy with his seemingly comfortable marriage to Ludovina. When he discovers her in an extremely compromising position on his favourite yellow sofa with his business partner Machado, he doesn’t know how to react but knows he must do something. His honour has been offended, he will have to challenge Machado to a duel, but he would much prefer life to return to normal.

A new opera written specially for Glyndebourne by our first Composer-in-Residence Julian Philips, with a text by Edward Kemp, it is based on a short story by Eça de Queirós. Writing about Lisbon’s bourgeois society towards the end of the 19th century, Queirós is a shrewd observer of the human condition and writes with an intriguing mix of gentle satire and wry humour. All of this is reflected in the music, which also draws on the rich tradition of Portuguese folk song.

An original Glyndebourne commission, first presented as part of the Jerwood Chorus Development Scheme during the 2009 Festival, the cast features past and present members of the Glyndebourne Chorus.

When booking, please note:

SightlinesBecause of the horseshoe shape of the auditorium, some seats have a restricted view of the stage. Tickets for these seats are clearly marked and priced accordingly.

SupertitlesSupertitles are concise translations projected above the stage. Not all seats have a clear view, so if supertitles are important to your enjoyment of the performance please let the Box Office know when booking your tickets.

Access requirementsPlease let the Box Office know at the time of booking if anyone in your party has special access requirements.

Wheelchair access to the auditorium is only available at Foyer Circle level, although there is lift access to all levels. A number of adapted toilets are available. Please note that customers who use a wheelchair and who require assistance must be accompanied by a companion.

Children’s tickets for RusalkaSupported by the New Generation Programme

For the performance of Rusalka on Saturday 13 October, children’s tickets are available for only £10 each when one or more full price ticket is also purchased at £42 or above. The children’s tickets will be allocated in the same price band as the full price ticket(s) and are available to under 18s only.

Any families who book children’s tickets on Saturday 13 October are invited to a special pre-performance workshop, starting at 2.00pm in the Ebert Room at Glyndebourne. Ideal for 8 to 12 year olds and their companions, the workshop provides an energetic introduction to Rusalka for the whole family. The event is free (but ticketed) and lasts 90 minutes.

Tickets for both the performance and workshop are available to book by telephone from Monday 11 June, subject to availability.

Please note that children under the age of eight may find it difficult to maintain concentration for the duration of an opera.

A new one-act opera by Glyndebourne Composer-in-Residence Luke Styles, with a libretto by Stephen Plaice. An original Glyndebourne commission, Lover’s Walk will be performed by the newly formed Glyndebourne Youth Company.

NEW TOUR CINEMA SCREENINGSGlyndebourne has been broadcasting its work since the 1930s. Following the success of our Festival cinema screenings, this year we are introducing a series of screenings during the Tour, taking place in a cinema close to our main touring venue at the same time as our visit. Presenting productions that Glyndebourne would not be able to Tour live, these screenings offer you a mini festival of Glyndebourne work to see you through the winter.

By Train Travel by train and take advantage of our free coach service which runs between Lewes station and Glyndebourne before and after all Tour performances. The coach departs from the station one hour before the performance starts and returns approximately 15 minutes after its end.

Lewes has excellent rail connections from London Victoria and across the South East, and all performances finish in time for you to return to London by train.

To take advantage of the coach service, please book a ticket in advance either by telephoning the Box Office or, if you have already booked your performance tickets online, via our website.

Parking and Electric CarsCar parking is free. We can re-charge electric cars during a performance. Please contact Box Office and Customer Service to arrange this in advance.
