Ongajoksetra - A Special Place in Norwegian Lapland

Ongajoksetra is situated at the end of a road, in the wilderness of Norwegian Lapland, but still just 25 km from Alta Airport. This is the perfect place for your FIT customers and small groups, all the year around - with Northern Lights in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer.

Upon arrival, our guests will discover a fantastic place with modern comfort and all fa-cilities. The farm comprises nine buildings surrounding a small yard. All the buildings are built in the traditional Norwegian mountain farm style. There is a main building, meeting room, stable, and 16 spacious guest rooms, many featuring a loft. The re-ception and the cosy dining room with adjacent drawing room are located in the main building.

We can host individual tourists and groups up to 35 guests. We are committed to wel-come your customers at one of the most beautiful lodges, with the best food and the most dedicated service in Norwegian Lapland. We will always do our very best to make your customers stay with us pleasant and memorable!

Our Food is based on Tradition and local IngredientsFrom the time people first settled here, it has been common to harvest from nature and make use of these natural ingredients in the cooking. We still follow that tradition. We use natural ingredients as much as possible and utilise local knowledge and ancient tradition in our cuisine.

The menu at Ongajok features game and fish that has been in this area from ancient times, including: reindeer, elk, hare, grouse, capercaille, duck and goose, salmon, trout, Arctic char, cod, catfish and the fish connected most with legends, the Atlantic halibut. We also make use of local ingredients such as mushrooms and berries picked in the Alta area, and additionally you will find wild sheep, boar, seal and whale on the menu.

The easy access to excellent basic ingredients makes us feel aware of and obliged to take care of the surrounding nature and what it provides us with. Our philosophy with food is to make all our dishes from scratch, using only the best ingredients found in Finnmark.

All the cakes and bread are home-made, as are the cured meats, jams, and desserts. All the dishes are made on site at the mountain farm and have our distinctive character of taste and style.

Snowmobile Safaris

Our snow mobile safaris are a nature-based experience filled with fun, action and ex-citement and are a great way to experience the wilderness in Alta in Arctic Norway.We organise several different types of snowmobile safari, ranging from short trips of a couple of hours duration to safaris lasting several days. We ride on the mountain pla-teau and can stay overnight in a lavvo (a traditional Sami tent).

We recommend a snowmobile adventure stopping at one of the many mountain lakes, which are ideal for fishing. Here, everyone can try ice-fishing and the chances of catch-ing a fish are good. We can warm up in the lavvo (traditional Sami tent) and enjoy a hot lunch here. If we catch fish, we will grill it in the lavvo. It’s hard to imagine a lunch fresher than that!

We follow a trail through the fantastic nature and the views are amazing. The trip starts down in the pine forest then we rapidly ascend the mountain. We pass several differ-ent climatic zones, and end up in extreme high mountainous terrain. The difference in altitude is around 650m and the view from the top is incredible. No other snowmobile safari operator can promise such a view, either here in Norway or in the rest of Europe. You can not even compare this with driving on a flat lake in Northern Finland.

Dog Sledding Tours

Dog sledding is great adventure, where the nature is enjoyed in a more quiet way than on a snow mobile. Still, there is speed and action on the sled as well! Imagine the thrill and at the same time moment of serenity, standing on the sled, leading your own team of dogs, while the Northern Lights move like flames across the sky. The only sound you hear is from the paws treading the snow.

Every participant get to try to drive their own team of dogs. There are two people per team of dogs; one drives, and the other sits in the sled. They then switch places en route.

Our guides have a lot of experience. They have all participated in the Finnmarksløpet, Northern Europe’s longest sled dog race. It is held in March each year, and is 1000 km long.
