Te park is carpeted with large areas o pigacewhich blooms in late October, resulting in swatheso pink fowers – a phenomenal sight! In Spring, certain parts o the Park become a meadow o yellowwildowers.

It was ormerly the site o the WilliamstownRacecourse, where a lone date palm tree, rising out o the at landscape andsome ruins o the grandstand are reminders o its nineteenth century grandeur.

A 4-metre sculpture called Requiem or a Champion, created by the artist Yvonne George, eaturing a bronze Stint perched on top o a galloping horse, was installed as a historical marker to commemorate the location o this oncethird largest racecourse in Victoria, graced by Australian thoroughbred cham-

pions, including Phar Lap.

Te Lower Kororoit Creek meanders through the Altona Coastal Park andempties into Port Phillip Bay, adjacent to the Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve.Te Jawbone Reserve consists o a sandy beach fanked by basalt rock outcrops.

A wooden boardwalk enables visitors to approach the water, rockpools, yellow

lichen and the saltmarsh-mangrove community. Huge colonies o aquatic birdsock to rocky outcrops located in the centre o a wetland l agoon. Seagrasses, kelp orests, mussels, abalones and rock lobster can be ound in the JawboneMarine Sanctuary.

Te Lower Kororoit Creek is interrupted in itscourse by a train bridge (Werribee train line) anda road that is submerged under water during hightides and hence, not usable by cars. You can otensee black swans bobbing up and down along thisstretch o the Creek.

During low tides, the sea water retreats a very

long distance rom the shore, exposing the sea bedsand temporarily creating islands in the sea, whichare sand ridges at a much higher elevation thanthose closer to the shores. Tis is a avourite time ordog owners to unleash their dogs there. Tese dogswill run ree on the exposed sea beds and “islands”,chasing each other.
