MGS Manufacturing might not be house-hold name, but the company’s customersproduce products that are in almost everyhousehold or workplace.

"The most successful companies in theworld partner with MGS Mfg. Group," thecompany states on its website. "The MGSMfg. Group is dedicated to servicing theplastics industry through its core competen-cies: engineering, design, product andprocess development, tooling, injection mold-ing, automation systems, turnkey manufactur-ing cells and multishot technologies. Withover 30 years of experience, MGS hasdeveloped a reputation for providing inno-vative manufacturing solutions."

The company is located at W188N11707 Maple Road. John Berg, director ofmarketing for MGS, explained that the com-pany’s customers are often large brand-own-ing OEM’s (Original EquipmentManufacturers) who need precision plasticparts, injection molds, automation systemsand other custom equipment necessary fortheir manufacturing process.

"They're the ones who come up with aproduct idea. We work with them to developthe most advantageous way to make thatproduct," Berg said.

Berg explained how the company manu-factures components that are used in areassuch as hand held electronic devices, med-ical devices, automobiles, and consumerproducts. Berg noted that MGS has madeparts for products ranging from violin bowsto hot tubs. MGS had $179 million in salesin 2014 and has over 1,400 employees atseven operations in Wisconsin, two locationsin Illinois and one location each in NewYork, Mexico and Ireland.

Company founder Mark G. Sellers wasa journeyman toolmaker who served a five-year apprentice at a local mold maker andthen started his own business — MoldmakersIncorporated — in Milwaukee. That led toleasing space in the village of Butler beforelater moving to a facility in Menomonee

Falls. "It started as a tool shop and within the

space of the first 10 years Mark beganexpanding the facility and adding morecapabilities," Berg explained. The companyadded engineering and design capabilities, bringing on employees who were accom-plished mold designers and who assist cus-tomers with product design-for-manufacturer.By the early 1990s, Moldmakers beganinvesting in injection molding machines totest the molds in-house, going away fromleasing machine time at local molders. "Asour shop continued to grow and developincreasingly sophisticated tooling systems, our customers required more and more ofthat service," Berg said.

Sellers also invested in expansion of in-house machining processes, from additionalwet and dry surface grinders to CNC hori-zontal and vertical machining centers to wireand sinker electronic discharge machining.MGS then began developing sophisticatedautomated systems combining machiningand computerized measurement with roboticintegration to speed up the process.

Within the next few years, Moldmakersbegan building sophisticated, multiple mate-rial molds that were used in industries suchas telecommunications and electronics.

Berg said early customers were from awide variety of industries that included con-struction, automotive, electronic, and othertraditional industrial-style businesses. Duringthose years, many of the customers werefrom the Germantown and MenomoneeFalls industrial parks and the SoutheasternWisconsin area. As the company continuedto increase capabilities and capacities, thatattracted customers from the computers, highend electronics systems and telecommunica-tions markets. Motorola was a natural cus-tomer of Moldmakers.

By 1996, the company moved to its cur-rent location in Germantown, while still hav-ing a facility in Menomonee Falls and otheradditional spaces in Germantown.

What comes from the injection molds areproducts that are likely in many householdsor businesses. "One or more of these prod-

ucts at some stage is going to be part of yourlife - in your home as part of your electricaland heating systems, the caps on the con-tainers you open, in the power tool or handtool you use, in your automobile, in your doc-tor’s or dentist’s office." Berg said, as hepointed to a table with several dozen partsamples.

Hewlett-Packard, Hospira, Honeywell,

Delphi Automotive, Abbott Laboratories andPaslode are among the company's cus-tomers, as MGS molds parts, builds toolingsystems and creates custom machinery theyuse to manufacture the millions and millionsof products they annually sell.

"Our components are relatively small. Most everything we create you can hold inyour hand," Berg said.

BY STATE SUPERINTENDENT TONY EVERSThe first week of May is the traditional

observance of Teacher Appreciation Week, and it’s one of the easiest topics for me to

address. I truly value and appreciate thework of the teachers and other professionalswho are in our schools helping our kidslearn.

I think there is no higher calling than tobe a teacher. Some mistakenly think that ifyou’re smart in a subject, you can teach. While deep content knowledge helps agood teacher be better, teaching is a com-plex task. Successful teachers like to workwith kids. They have an understanding ofchild development and learning styles aswell as classroom management. They knowhow to develop lessons for today’s class-rooms that offer multiple ways for students toshow their learning. From writing stories, toputting together multi-media projects, to dra-matic reenactments — teachers meet kidswhere they are and move them ahead toreach academic goals.

But, it’s not just academics. Our teachersalso are there, alongside parents and family

members, helping children become better cit-izens; people who are ready to become thedoctors and medical professionals, civic andbusiness leaders, inventors and entrepre-neurs, carpenters and welders, and yes, teachers for tomorrow.

You can’t sugar coat it. Being a teacherin Wisconsin has been pretty tough thesepast few years. Take-home pay has been cut.The decades-old system that provided them avoice in their work environment has beentorn apart. Too many have retired or left theprofession. Teachers have faced lots ofchange and new demands on their time. And, the political backdrop in Madison hasbeen exceedingly difficult. It’s no wonderresearch indicates that fewer high school

graduates want to go into education. But I am optimistic. The work of an edu-

cator is heroic. Educators change lives. Thework is also rewarding. There’s no better feel-ing than seeing the spark in a student who’smastered a new concept. Educators teach toall students and close achievement gaps.

As a member of the Froedtert &Medical College of Wisconsin health net-work, Community Memorial Hospital isincluded on a list recognizing the top 20medium size health systems in the nation. The Froedtert & MCW health network is theonly Milwaukee health system to make thelist and one of just four in Wisconsin. The listwas compiled by Truven Health Analytics,an independent firm that evaluates hospitalsand health systems.

Community Memorial, FroedtertHospital in Wauwatosa, and St. Joseph’sHospital in West Bend are the Froedtert &MCW health network’s three hospitals.

According to Truven, health systems onthe list generally outperformed their peersin a variety of important measures, includ-

ing higher survival rates, fewer errors, andlower costs.

“Being recognized by this highly credi-ble group affirms the value our health carenetwork brings to our patients and to ourcommunity,” said Catherine Jacobson, pres-ident and chief executive officer ofFroedtert Health.

Jacobson noted that in addition toFroedtert & MCW, the top health systemslist includes Ministry Health Care and SSMHealth Care. All three are members ofIntegrated Health Network, a clinically inte-grated group of major Wisconsin healthsystems working to improve care.

The Truven study analyzed data from341 health systems and their 2,812 associ-ated hospitals to identify those that achieve

superior performance based on a compos-ite score of nine measures of care quality, patient perception of care, cost per episodeof illness and operational efficiency.

Truven divided the top systems intothree comparison groups based on totaloperating expenses of the member hospi-tals. The Froedtert & MCW health networkis in the medium size health system catego-ry, which includes health systems with totalannual operating expenses in the $750 mil-lion-$1.5 billion range.

In March, Froedtert Hospital wasnamed to Truven Health’s annual 100 TopHospitals list for the third consecutive year,in the category of Major Teaching Hospital.

During 1861 Mexico was ruled by thepresident Benito Juarez. At this time thecountry was passing by a very hard eco-nomic situation, 91% of federal incomewas used to pay the external depth. Therefore the president Benito Juarezwas trying to work out a financial agree-ment with the following countries:England, Spain and France. Everythingwent well, but the Conde Napoleon IIIdemanded this payment in full, with a100% interest and also he had the inten-tion to conquer Mexico.

At the present time France had themost powerful and organized military. Therefore Napoleon thought it would beeasier to conquer Mexico.

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army

organized themselves to battle againstthe French army, which was under theleadership of General Charles FerdinandLatrille. The French army was defeatedby the Mexican Army. This act of brav-ery earned the respect of many Europeancountries, because the Mexican Armywas underestimated. As a result of thebattle, the French army had 476 deathsand 520 injuries. The Mexican army had83 deaths, 250 injuries and 12 missingsoldiers.

This is the true story behind Cinco DeMayo, also known as La Batalla DePuebla.

American Cancer Society’s popularfundraiser is a combined-community eventfor Germantown, Lannon, Lisbon,Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and Sussex

Relay for Life of Quarry Communities(Germantown, Lannon, Lisbon,Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, and Sussex)is still in need of teams, cancer survivorsand caregivers who want to have fun help-ing kick cancer to the curb May 29 from 6p.m. to 9 a.m. (May 30) at GermantownHigh School, W180 N11501 River Lane.

“The more teams we have, the moremoney we raise to fight cancer,” saidAllison Klein, local American CancerSociety representative. “Teams are theheart and soul of every Relay event.”

Relay for Life of Quarry Communities isa 15-hour, family-friendly fundraiser thatcombines team participation in a walkingrelay with music, entertainment, games, food, a silent auction, and even camping. Each team must have at least one walker onthe track at all times.

Teams of friends, teams of families, andteams from area businesses, churches, organizations, and schools solicit sponsors

and donations. Funds also are raised fromactivities that occur throughout the event,Klein said.

“Because Relay For Life is such an inspi-rational occasion, we want as many cancersurvivors and caregivers as possible to par-ticipate, especially during the emotionalopening ceremonies when they take the cel-ebratory first lap that kicks off the festivi-ties,” Klein said

Participants aren’t required to stay forthe duration of the relay, but many do.

“A lot of teams set up camp around thetrack and stick around for the cama-raderie,” Klein said. “Some rest, and somepull all-nighters and experience everythingthat goes on.”

Relay For Life is the American CancerSociety’s most popular and successfulfundraiser. About four million people partic-ipated in more than 6,000 Relay eventsworldwide in 2014.

According to Remodeling magazine's"2014 Cost vs. Value Report," a majorkitchen remodeling project should enablehomeowners to recoup 74.2 percent oftheir initial investments. Kitchen renova-tions have long been a safe way toimprove the functionality and value of ahome. But not every kitchen project is aguaranteed winner. Homeowners mayinadvertently make changes that end upsticking out like a sore thumb rather than

improving the space. Take a look at thesekitchen remodeling dos and don'ts toguide your next undertaking.

DO consider the way your kitchen willlook with the rest of the home. Keep archi-tectural integrity in mind when designingthe space. A farmhouse sink and countrycabinets can look out of place in an ultra-modern home.

DON'T overlook the importance of aseasoned designer or architect. Thesepros will know the tricks to maximizingspace and achieving the ideal layout ofappliances and may be able to recom-mend local contractors and vendors.

DO look beyond surface details to thestructural integrity of the design. The kitchenshould be functional, long-lasting and beau-tiful.

DON'T design just for today, but lookto the future as well. Unless you are willingto spend $50,000 every five years, lookfor styles and materials that will last for thelong haul. Older homeowners may wantto make adjustments now that address

potential mobility issues down the road. DO work with what you have. A com-

plete demolition and renovation is notalways necessary to achieve the desiredresults. Only invest in major changes ifsomething is not working (such as havingto walk across the entire kitchen to accessthe stove) or is unsafe. Otherwise, minorupgrades may do the trick.

DON'T over-improve the space. A fullyequipped commercial kitchen may behandy for a professional chef, but theaverage person may not need an industri-al hood and indoor pizza oven. Whenyou make excessive improvements, youmay not be able to recoup as much of themoney spent because your home will notbe on par with the values of homes in theneighborhood. DO make sure you canafford the project. Plan for some unex-pected purchases and plan out the reno-vation according to your budget.Skimping on materials or design becauseof lack of money may leave you feelingdissatisfied afterward.
