Hamilton School Board mem-ber Gerald Schmitz was honoredlast week for his time on theHamilton School Board, whichspanned 40 years.
"We were trying to identifysome good quotes and all theones that resonated were abouthumility of a leader, and thatreally who Jerry Schmitz is,"Hamilton School DistrictSuperintendent Kathleen Cookesaid during a presentation at theJan. 5 Hamilton School Board
meeting.Schmitz will not be seeking
another term on the Hamiltonboard, and his current term willexpire in April. Schmitz's familyattended the meeting for thepresentation.
Cooke recalled that approxi-mately 25 years ago a villagetrustee in one of the communi-ties served by the Hamilton dis-trict approached Schmitz and"chewed him out," complainingabout "issues in the HamiltonSchool District. Cooke saidSchmitz and other district lead-
ers took the criticism to heart, and have been focused onimproving the district.
Cooke later said the personcame across Schmitz "not toolong ago" and praised the dis-trict for its improvement.
Cooke cited campaign litera-ture from Schmitz approximate-ly 15 years ago, which citedincreased student achievement, eight new building additions andone new school that had beenconstructed by that time.
Cooke said that since thecampaign literature was pre-sented, the district academicperformance has continued toimprove and is now listed as"significantly exceeds expecta-tions." Also, a fine arts centerhas been constructed at thehigh school, there have beenthree classroom additions whilethe Hamilton Athletic Centerwas constructed at the highschool. Also, since Schmitzstarted with the board, theHamilton Education Foundationwas created and has raised $1million in private funds to sup-port innovative programming in
the district.Cooke also mentioned that at
the time Schmitz joined theboard, district enrollment was at4,000 then dipped to 2,400before increasing to 4,700. Also, the district has started a strate-gic planning process and eachdistrict building has site planswhile the district has expanded4- and 5-year-old kindergartenprograms.
"All of this has occurredthrough steady, focused leader-ship," Cooke said.
Schmitz was presented witha school bell by board PresidentGabe Kolesari. Kolesari noted theSchmitz also served on theLisbon Town Board for severalyears.
"We rode the good times andthe bad times together here, andthere's a lot of stories to tell,"Kolesari said. "It's been a pleas-ure working with you."
In his comments to theboard, Schmitz recalled that hisson Mike was in kindergarten orfirst grade when he started serv-ing on the board.
"It's all of us together that
has done this, it's not me, it'snot Gabe," Schmitz said, men-tioning other board members."It's all the administration,we've always been a team, andthat's what turned the districtaround."
Schmitz thanked the com-munity for their support.
"We can't do it withoutthem," Schmitz said.

The bail for a former educatoraccused of having sex with a childunder age 18 was reduced during anappearance in Waukesha County CircuitCourt Jan. 4.
April M. Novak, a former readinginterventionist at Menomonee FallsHigh School, is charged with 12 countsof sexual assault of a child by school
staff in alleged incidents that occurredfrom October to December. A conviction
for sexual assault of a student by schoolstaff carries a possible sentence of a$10,000 fine, six years in jail, or both.
During an appearance in court Jan.4, Novak waived her right to a prelimi-nary hearing. Defense attorney MichaelHart entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Novak. Bail had been set at $100,000for Novak after she was charged Dec.
22. Hart requested that the bail bereduced. He noted that Novak had notengaged in any criminal conduct previ-ously and had earned a master's degree.
"I don't, under any analysis, under-stand the $100,000. I believe that notonly to be excessive but grossly exces-sive," Hart said. "There was no argu-ment or evidence presented at the timeof the initial appearance that Ms. Novakwas at risk for flight."
He added that Novak "has somemental health issues that require treat-ment. While at a bare minimum she isreceiving (medication) at the county
jail, she is certainly is not receiving theamount of care and treatment we as asystem, would hope people in her situa-tion, would receive."
He said that a cash bail is appropri-ated and requested bail be reduced to$10,000.
Assistant District AttorneySzczupakiewicz said "a substantbail is appropriate given the nathe charges and the numcharges.”
Szczupkiewicz added that duinitial hearing there were stapresented in which Novak said cers she had thoughts of crash

Germantown splitsgames at Rathke tourney
The team that stopped Germantown'sthree-year Division I title run last springdominated the past champions Dec. 30.
"Not only are they a great team butthey're better than they were last year,"Germantown Coach Mark Adams said of defending champion Stevens Point Dec.28 after a 77-64 loss to the Panthers atthe Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball
Yearbook Shootout, which was held onthe Concordia University Wisconsin cam-pus Dec. 28-30.
The Panthers started the game by jumping out to a 11-2 lead. After a bas-ket by Germantown's Connor Edmonds atthe 13:43 mark of the first half, StevensPoint went on a 12-2 run to take a 26-6lead with 8:10 left in the first half fol-lowing a basket by Sam Hauser. Pointcontinued building on their lead andheld a 40-22 halftime lead.
Germantown Coach Mark Adams saidthe Panthers showed a patience onoffense to get points, which allowedthem to get out to a lead. He explainedhis team needed to make extra passesand move the ball side-to-side to make
Point play defense longer instead of opt-ing for long jump shots."The strength of that team -- there's
a lot of them -- but their runs are whatdo you in," Adams said.
Adams said getting the ball inside
was important, but the Panthersresponded with more runs after a fewinside baskets.
Stevens Point expanded on their leadmidway through the second half andheld a 71-43 lead following a three pointbasket by Jake Hofmeister with 6:24remaining. Germantown closed the gapthe rest of the way, as Juwan McCloud
converted three three-point basketsbetween the 3:55 and 1:55 mark.
Point's Trevor Anderson led all scorerswith 31 points while McCloud scored 26points for Germantown.
It was the second consecutive loss forGermantown after the Warhawks lost toArrowhead on Dec. 22, 87-79.
Germantown returns to North ShoreConference play against Cedarburg Jan. 8.
"We got to get after it and get afterit on both sides of the court, Adams said.
After the loss to Point, Germantownhad an overall record of 7-2.

January is National Radon Action MonthWisconsin health officials, as part of
National Radon Action Month, areencouraging homeowners to check theirhome's radon levels because exposure toradioactive radon gas is the leadingcause of lung cancer among non-smok-
ers nationwide.Radon is an odorless radioactive gasthat is naturally present in the groundand can enter buildings through theirfoundations. Both old and newer homescan be susceptible to radon. Between 5and 10 percent of Wisconsin homeshave elevated airborne concentrationson the main living level where peoplespend the most time, according to statedata.
An estimated 20,000 lung cancerdeaths are caused by radon annuallyamong non-smokers, according toreports by the EnvironmentalProtection Agency and the U.S. Surgeon
General.“Radon is an easily mitigated heath
risk. The small cost of the kit, availableeither through the County or at yourlocal hardware store, is well worth thepeace of mind knowing that your home
and family are safe and healthy,” stat-ed Waukesha County Executive PaulFarrow.
More than 60 radon mitigation con-tractors in Wisconsin are nationally cer-tified and install highly effective soil-depressurization radon control systems.Thousands of systems are installed inexisting homes in Wisconsin each year.New construction should include fea-tures recommended by the NationalAssociation of Home Builders to reduceradon entry.

Few people in American history havehad as strong an impact on the UnitedStates as Martin Luther King, Jr., the civilrights leader who was slain in 1968 at theage of 39. Through his message of nonvi-olence and civil disobedience as a meansto advancing civil rights for all people,King changed the lives of millions. Thosechanges are still felt today, nearly half acentury after his death.
Though his death was tragic, King'slife remains something to celebrate, a factrecognized by the federal government in1983, when President Ronald Reagansigned a bill creating a federal holiday tohonor King. Since 2000, all 50 states haveobserved the holiday, which has beenobserved on the third Monday of Januaryeach year since 1992. For many, Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day is a time to reflect onKing's life and advance his message.Children do not have school on MartinLuther King, Jr. Day, making the holidayan ideal time for parents to teach theirkids about King and his lasting legacy. The following are a few unique waysadults and children alike can celebratethe life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Give back to your community. Acommunity leader who made countlesssacrifices for both his own communityand the nationwide community of thosedenied their civil rights, King is perhapsbest honored by those who make effortsto give back to their communities. Parentscan take their youngsters to volunteerand help the less fortunate, be it workingat a soup kitchen or an assisted livingfacility. Many communities host outreachevents on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, andadults and children can take advantage of such events to honor King's legacy.
• Read about the Civil RightsMovement with your children. Thanks toadvancements in technology, men, women and children now have a wealth of information at their fingertips. Thismakes it easy for parents to discuss theCivil Rights Movement, and King's role in
that movement, with their children. Theolder kids are, the more detailed parentscan be when explaining the strugglesKing encountered. Even adults withoutchildren are likely to be enlightened by
studying the Civil Rights MovemKing's life in closer detail.
• Listen to or read King's sRenowned for his abilities as anKing gave numerous speeches thrhis life, many of which are equallmore, moving today than they wing his lifetime. While King's "IDream" speech delivered in 1963steps of the Lincoln Memorial i
known, King gave many more sthroughout his lifetime. Such sare an invaluable resource for thoested in learningaaabout the lifeand his beliefs.

PET OF THE WEEK My name is Paris and I am a handsome little guy. I
was transferred from Fox Valley Humane Associationdue to lack of space. I am originally from anovercrowded shelter in Mississippi so I am a refinedsouthern gentleman. I am only 5-10 pounds at 2months old and will stay pretty small even as an adult. I am good wrespectful of cats. I would be good with dogs too but prefer smalleones because I am a perfect distinguished boy. I take treats gentlyvery well with food and other valuable resources and I am really toall kinds of handling. My new home could have children of any age.a bit vocal and since I am just a pup I have some learning to do. Ipractice walking on a leash and need to work on potty training.Thesshould be a snap because I am very smart. I am really looking folearning all sorts of things with my new family. Stop on by and meam sure to dazzle you with my exquisite nature and shower you with
