Hamilton School Board mem-ber Gerald Schmitz was honoredlast week for his time on theHamilton School Board, whichspanned 40 years.

"We were trying to identifysome good quotes and all theones that resonated were abouthumility of a leader, and thatreally who Jerry Schmitz is,"Hamilton School DistrictSuperintendent Kathleen Cookesaid during a presentation at theJan. 5 Hamilton School Board

meeting.Schmitz will not be seeking

another term on the Hamiltonboard, and his current term willexpire in April. Schmitz's familyattended the meeting for thepresentation.

Cooke recalled that approxi-mately 25 years ago a villagetrustee in one of the communi-ties served by the Hamilton dis-trict approached Schmitz and"chewed him out," complainingabout "issues in the HamiltonSchool District. Cooke saidSchmitz and other district lead-

ers took the criticism to heart,and have been focused onimproving the district.

Cooke later said the personcame across Schmitz "not toolong ago" and praised the dis-trict for its improvement.

Cooke cited campaign litera-ture from Schmitz approximate-ly 15 years ago, which citedincreased student achievement,eight new building additions andone new school that had beenconstructed by that time.

Cooke said that since thecampaign literature was pre-sented, the district academicperformance has continued toimprove and is now listed as"significantly exceeds expecta-tions." Also, a fine arts centerhas been constructed at thehigh school, there have beenthree classroom additions whilethe Hamilton Athletic Centerwas constructed at the highschool. Also, since Schmitzstarted with the board, theHamilton Education Foundationwas created and has raised $1million in private funds to sup-port innovative programming in

the district.Cooke also mentioned that at

the time Schmitz joined theboard, district enrollment was at4,000 then dipped to 2,400before increasing to 4,700. Also,the district has started a strate-gic planning process and eachdistrict building has site planswhile the district has expanded4- and 5-year-old kindergartenprograms.

"All of this has occurredthrough steady, focused leader-ship," Cooke said.

Schmitz was presented witha school bell by board PresidentGabe Kolesari. Kolesari noted theSchmitz also served on theLisbon Town Board for severalyears.

"We rode the good times andthe bad times together here, andthere's a lot of stories to tell,"Kolesari said. "It's been a pleas-ure working with you."

In his comments to theboard, Schmitz recalled that hisson Mike was in kindergarten orfirst grade when he started serv-ing on the board.

"It's all of us together that

has done this, it's not me, it'snot Gabe," Schmitz said, men-tioning other board members."It's all the administration,we've always been a team, andthat's what turned the districtaround."

Schmitz thanked the com-munity for their support.

"We can't do it withoutthem," Schmitz said.

Veteran to describe Honor Flight tripduring presentation at Pauline Haass

Library“My Experiences on an Honor Flight

to Washington, D.C.” will be presented atthe Pauline Haass Public Library onTuesday, Jan. 12 at 1 pm. Fred Kellerwill describe the events of the June,2015 amazing adventure.

Keller, who is the area’s historian andcurator of the Sussex-Lisbon AreaHistorical Society museum, is also a vet-

eran of the Korean War. He was one of 140 veterans of World War II and theKorean War who spent a day viewing var-ious monuments and historical sites inthe nation’s capital.

He will also talk about his assign-ment to Occupied Germany, from 1952-54, where he served as an MP. He willdisplay mementoes, including a slideprogram, scrap books and military equip-ment.

This free program will last about anhour. No registration is required. Thisand other programs are presented by theFriends of the Library to provide learningopportunities to the residents of thearea. The next programs are Feb. 4:

Writing! and March 3: KnowSigns of Alzheimer’s.

The bail for a former educatoraccused of having sex with a childunder age 18 was reduced during anappearance in Waukesha County CircuitCourt Jan. 4.

April M. Novak, a former readinginterventionist at Menomonee FallsHigh School, is charged with 12 countsof sexual assault of a child by school

staff in alleged incidents that occurredfrom October to December. A conviction

for sexual assault of a student by schoolstaff carries a possible sentence of a$10,000 fine, six years in jail, or both.

During an appearance in court Jan.4, Novak waived her right to a prelimi-nary hearing. Defense attorney MichaelHart entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Novak. Bail had been set at $100,000for Novak after she was charged Dec.

22. Hart requested that the bail bereduced. He noted that Novak had notengaged in any criminal conduct previ-ously and had earned a master's degree.

"I don't, under any analysis, under-stand the $100,000. I believe that notonly to be excessive but grossly exces-sive," Hart said. "There was no argu-ment or evidence presented at the timeof the initial appearance that Ms. Novakwas at risk for flight."

He added that Novak "has somemental health issues that require treat-ment. While at a bare minimum she isreceiving (medication) at the county

jail, she is certainly is not receiving theamount of care and treatment we as asystem,would hope people in her situa-tion, would receive."

He said that a cash bail is appropri-ated and requested bail be reduced to$10,000.

Assistant District AttorneySzczupakiewicz said "a substantbail is appropriate given the nathe charges and the numcharges.”

Hamilton School District students,staff and families showed appreciationfor the needs of others during the holi-days by contributing to charitable organ-izations and extending acts of kindnesswithin the community and beyond.Following is a summary of activities ateach school.

Willow Springs Learning Center

Willow Springs Learning Center four-year-old kindergartners and their fami-lies contributed generously to SussexOutreach Services (SOS) this holiday sea-son. Families and staff collected 300gifts, and students hand delivered themas a group to St. James Catholic Churchwhere they sang songs before returningto school. The toys and gifts will be dis-tributed within the local community.

Maple Avenue Elementary SchoolMaple Avenue fifth grade students,

through their Uniting Kids andCommunity (UKC) program, sponsored afood drive. Maple Avenue students col-lected more than 700 non-perishablehealthy foods and snacks to be donatedto the Sussex Food Pantry.

Maple Avenue buddy classes in firstand third grades earned money by doingextra work at home. They raised $630 topurchase 125 books for all ages and read-ing levels that families could enjoy dur-ing the holiday season. All books weredonated to SOS.

Maple Avenue staff members spon-sored a family through SOS and providedgifts, books, games, educational toys,arts and crafts, clothing, gift cards, meal

items, snacks and holiday décor.Christina Garley’s fifth-grade class-

room is collecting money for a charitableorganization as part of its “Buck a Book”program.

Lannon Elementary SchoolLannon Elementary School students,

families and staff members collected abrimming barrel of 112 pairs of socks, 28

slippers, 33 hats and 62 children’s newunder garments. In addition, 326 boxesof macaroni and cheese and 85 cannedgoods were donated to SOS for holidayneeds.

Lannon staff sponsored a family forChristmas through SOS and generouslydonated gifts and gift cards to help themthis holiday season.

Students decorated 290 paper grocerybags donated by Sussex Piggly Wiggly tobe used at the Sussex Food PantryChristmas dinner distribution.

Marcy Elementary SchoolMarcy students collected more than

$750 during Veteran’s Day week to pur-chase a bench for the Templeton MiddleSchool veterans’ memorial. The bench

from Marcy will say “Welcome home.Thank you for your service.”

Marcy Parent Teacher Organizationraised more than $8,000 during theMarcy Fun Run to give to area charities.Funds were donated to Humane AnimalWelfare Society of Waukesha County(HAWS), Honor Flights, MuscularDystrophy Association, Midwest AthletesAgainst Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fundand Children’s Hospital.

Kindergarten classes raised money forthe HAWS.

First grade students made blanketsand collected food for HAWS. In addition,they held a food drive for Sussex FoodPantry.

Second-graders collected books for akindergarten class in Milwaukee andmade treat bags for the Ronald McDonaldHouse.

Fourth grade classes donated toys,food and home goods to the RonaldMcDonald House, collected items forHAWS and made placemats forMilwaukee’s Community Projects forSeniors meal program.

Club made toys and fleece blankets forthe cats at HAWS.

Kindergartners in Peter Dargatz’sclass collected tickets for classroom tasksin their “wants and needs” unit. Ticketswill be turned in for items the studentswant and donated to patients in need atChildren’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Kindergarten classes delivered giftsfor 75 residents at Serenity Village, anassisted living residence in Slinger. Aspart of the Kindergarten Service Project,students and their families signed up toprovide gifts for individuals at the facili-ty. The gifts were distributed at the resi-dents’ holiday party.

Woodside first grade and third gradefamilies brought donations for the SussexFood Pantry to their holiday music per-formances.

Woodside families and staff memberscollected more than $2,275 beforeThanksgiving to create turkey basketsfilled with groceries for families in needin Milwaukee’s Notre Dame Middle Schoolcommunity. Woodside students were

asked to donate money they earned bydoing chores at home. Parent volunteersshopped for groceries to build the bas-kets. Items included a frozen turkey, bagof stuffing, jar of gravy, white and sweetpotatoes, fresh vegetables, bread, cannedcranberries, a fresh pie, beverages, appe-tizers such as crackers and nuts, alongwith an aluminum roasting pan. All of the items were put into a large sturdylaundry basket and delivered to families.

Templeton Middle SchoolTempleton employees donated money

to be able to wear jeans to school for oneday. A total of $180 was raised for theSussex Food Pantry.

Student Council collected pajamas forthe Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive

through Scholastic Reading Program.Scholastic will pair the pajamas with abook to give to children in need.

The sixth grade Blue House, underthe concept of giving and appreciation,collected for the Templeton Pajama Drive,Toys for Tots and Sussex Food Pantrydrive as well as donating gently usedbooks for children.

Hamilton High SchoolClub Action raised money by hosting

“Rock Fest” at Sussex Bowl. All proceedswere donated to Make-A-Wish founda-tion in honor of Isaac Steven Krill. Inaddition, the club collected gently used

Yearbook Shootout, which was held onthe Concordia University Wisconsin cam-pus Dec. 28-30.

The Panthers started the game by jumping out to a 11-2 lead. After a bas-ket by Germantown's Connor Edmonds atthe 13:43 mark of the first half, StevensPoint went on a 12-2 run to take a 26-6lead with 8:10 left in the first half fol-lowing a basket by Sam Hauser. Pointcontinued building on their lead andheld a 40-22 halftime lead.

Germantown Coach Mark Adams saidthe Panthers showed a patience onoffense to get points,which allowedthem to get out to a lead. He explainedhis team needed to make extra passesand move the ball side-to-side to make

Point play defense longer instead of opt-ing for long jump shots."The strength of that team -- there's

a lot of them -- but their runs are whatdo you in," Adams said.

Adams said getting the ball inside

was important, but the Panthersresponded with more runs after a fewinside baskets.

Hamilton DECA members shopped forholiday presents for the first grade classat Gaenslen Elementary School inMilwaukee. First-graders at Gaenslencompleted "All About Me" forms andHamilton DECA members provided giftbags with at least one nice toy and otherinexpensive gifts to these students.Gaenslen Elementary is located in aMilwaukee neighborhood that has one of the lowest household incomes in thestate. Several of the first grade studentsare homeless. In addition to deliveringpresents, Hamilton DECA took cookies

and juice, and the Hamilton studentsspent an afternoon Dec. 16 with thechildren they shopped for, reading thembooks, putting together their new toys,and playing with them. This has becomean annual event for Hamilton DECA andis always a heart-warming experience forthe students who participate. The advi-sor and 28 students made the trip.

Hamilton Charger football teammembers teamed up with Hamiltoncheerleaders to host a food drive at theDec. 22 basketball game for the SussexFood Pantry. During the Christmas sea-son, team members volunteered at theCharger Challenge: Holiday Edition andshared cookies and carols with the resi-dents of the Sterling House in Sussex.
