programmes, which include Child andYouth-care Centres. “In 2014 the govern-ment subsidised only 26% of Engo’s totalincome, so this project is critical for thesurvival of our centres,” Jana Marx, Engo’spublic relations officer and organiser of thisproject, said.“Tickets cost only R20. By making this
R20 donation, you are immediately enteredinto the Chev Spark lucky draw,” Marxcontinued. When the Bloem Show ends, tickets can
still be bought at all Engo Centres acrossthe Free State, and at the information deskat Mimosa Mall.Several promotions will be held across
the Free State during the next sevenmonths, where tickets will be sold. Accord-ing to Marx, a complete promotion calenderwill be available soon, but key ticketstations include Bloem Show, Volksblad’smonthly food and arts market, MimosaMall, Ficksburg’s Cherry Festival and theVrystaat Arts Festival.Ticket sales close 20 November and five
finalists will be drawn and announced byPwC on 11 January 2016.The final draw function, where the
winner of the Spark will be announced, willtake place on 22 January 2016.The four remaining finalists will each
receive a prize worth R2 000.De Wet Claassens, director of manage-

MANY people with disabilities say withtime they have learnt to live with theirdisability, but what really makes their lifedifficult is that society still lacks theunderstanding and patience these peopleneed. In anticipation of the staging of InBlood, a musical with a cast made up ofperformers with various disabilities at theSand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfonteinfrom 14 to 16 May, Express spoke to fourindividuals with various disabilities tolearn more about their everyday lives.Natus van Niekerk (40), who suffers from
cerebral palsy, says he has made peacewith his situation and is making the best ofhis life. He says his brain was starved ofoxygen when he was born and because ofthis his father wanted to sue the hospital, but his mother convinced him otherwiseand rather asked that their energy bechannelled into making life as “normal” aspossible for him.“I attended school until gr. 10 at the
Martie du Plessis School and my motherorganised regular physiotherapy sessions
for me and that really helped me to besomewhat independent,” says Natus. For Natus’s wife, Charmaine, a former
staff nurse, life did not start out as that of aperson with a disability.“I was independent for 17 years until I
was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and Isuddenly had to find other ways of doingeveryday things,” she says.Charmaine, who runs a copy and fax
shop, says the biggest challenge she andothers like her face, is changing people’smindsets about those with disabilities.Soft-spoken Dikeledi Shupinyaneng is a
quadriplegic who suffered her fate in 1989at the hands of her then boyfriend whilethey were both still in high school. The 51-year-old says coming to terms
with her condition was very difficult atfirst, but since she had learnt to accept hersituation, the quality of her life hasdramatically improved.“When I was still able to walk, I never
thought I would be here, but I guess lifehad other ideas, but like I said, I havelearnt to accept my fate and life is just finefor me,” she says.Welkom-born Leon van Wyk also suffers
from cerebral palsy and says doing every-day things can sometimes be frustratingbecause people do not have the understand-ing and patience needed to see him live anormal life. Van Wyk, who speaks withdifficulty due to the cerebral palsy, lived anormal life even securing work as aplumber and working with his father beforehe passed away.“Visiting my siblings (five siblings, none
of whom are disabled) is virtually impossi-ble because the public transport systemsimply does not cater for people like me,”the die-hard Kaizer Chiefs supporter says.Natus, Charmaine, Dikeledi and Leon
will be special guests at one of the perform-ances of In Blood.Tickets cost R120, with a concession of
R100 for early bookings and pensioners, R60for group bookings of ten or more peopleand students. Booking is through the PacofsBox Office (office hours). The duration ofthe show is two hours including a 20-min-ute interval. A preview performance of InBlood will be given on 13 May at 18:00(admission free). FOURIESBURG. – Fed-up farmers inFouriesburg say they have had it withtheir Lesotho counterparts deliberatelyletting their animals graze on their farmsacross the Caledon River and have vowedto kill any trespassing animals and theirshepherds. Police, however, said they hadagreed to let the animals graze on theirfarms in exchange for payment.
Maphale Moloi, the desperate farmers’spokesperson, said although they hadnever threatened to harm their neigh-bours before, this was going to change.
“I am going to buy bullets and kill atleast ten of them. That is the only waythat the South African Police Service(SAPS) would react. Our police are notprotecting us. We have reported thiscrime many times, but they have donenothing. I think we should now take thelaw into our own hands. I am eventhinking of joining the Boko Haram sothat they can help me with these trouble-makers,” he said.
He said they would never stop fromfarming near the river.
According to Moloi, each of the farmershad lost about R1,2 million a year becauseof the damage caused by their neighbours.
“We have been talking to those peoplefor a long time and they don’t listen. Wewill show them what we are made of.They are unrepentant because every timewe find them on our farms they fightwith us as if the farms belong to them,”he said.
Moloi said they even engaged one of thevillage chiefs on the matter who hadpromised to talk to his people. “We weresitting on the South African side of theriver with the chief and his people on theother side, just to show you how desper-
ate we are on this matter,” he said.During Express Eastern Free State’s recent
visit to the farms the cattle were standing inthe river. According to Moloi, the animalsflee to the Lesotho side of the river whenev-er they see or hear cars approaching.
“The only people they (the people fromLesotho) are afraid of are the South AfricanNational Defence Force (SANDF), but they(the SANDF) are not helping us in thissituation. I always thought it was illegal forone to cross the river from one country toanother, but it is happening here like never
before,” he said.Const. Maselela Langa, in the Free State
communication unit of the South AfricanPolice Services (SAPS), denied allegationsthat the police were not helping the farmers. He added that there was no case registeredwith regards to the Fouriesburg farmers andthe Lesotho citizens.
“During our own investigations, we foundthat those farmers had an agreement withthe people to let their animals graze on theirfarms after they had harvested. The agree-ment was that the people from Lesotho
would pay them a certain amount. However, the problem occurred when theanimals grazed on areas not assigned tothem,” he said.
Langa said the farmers illegallyimpounded those animals. “It is allegedthat those animals were stolen by thefarmers and now the Lesotho people wantthem back. As police officials we are notliable for such agreements,” he said.) At the time of going to print theSANDF could not be reached for com-ment.
Nomore, say fed-up farmers
KGOBATHA MBULI, Maphale Moloi, Ellias Ramohapi, Khothatso Mofokeng and Kgorobolane Maduna pose in the soya beans whichthey say are being eaten by the cattle from Lesotho.

The kingdom dic-tates everything inour lives. The powerworking in us meansthe kingdom is work-ing in us. When wehave the kingdom ofGod in us, it dictatesthe pace.
People who hearvoices have those voi-ces originating from akingdom; if aperson issick, that sickness iscoming from a king-dom and it is not thekingdom of God. Thesickness is not readyto leaveunless there isa more powerful king-dom around.
There is a kingdomover our lives that an-tagonise our destiny.
But there is a powerin the kingdom of Godthat can overcomeand tackle these stig-mas.

FREE STATEPREMIER AceMagashule hasjoined Pres. JacobZuma and SouthAfrican citizens instrongly condemningviolent attacks onforeign nationals.“We are all
Africans, irrespec-tive of the country of origin as prescribed bythe borders that ascribe nationality andcitizenship,” said Magashule.“It is imperative that we label activities of
criminals as nothing else but criminal, as theloving people of our country have co-existedsince time immemorial with their fellowAfrican brothers and sisters without anyreported elements such as these incidents.”He said although there had been no
reported acts of violence against foreignnationals in the Free State, residents andprovincial government had to get involved ingovernment’s action plan to curb the attacks. He encouraged everyone to take a firm stand.“As part of our quest to build a better

My viewLetlafuoaMatsebaSocial observer
THIS is becoming burdensomenow. Every time a nimble pen isgrabbed to address some social illthe pulse rises and the heartbeatbecomes irregular. There are many ways of earning
an income, and most of them arereferred to as either employmentor self-employment (entrepreneur-ship).The beautiful land has laws that
govern these endeavours, hencesome are considered legal whilesome are illegal. Most fall between the clearly
defined barrier lines X forexample, one can be a self-em-ployed like a street vendor sellingfruit and vegetables, but one maynot produce, acquire or sell, highschedule drugs without licence. It is often easy for anyone with
a dignified means of living todraw a hard and fast line todesignate ‘means of living’ aseither true and noble, or asunacceptable or illegal. One suchunfortunate trade is prostitutionor sex-work.One only has to drive up Nelson
Mandela Drive at night to seethose ladies-of-the-night in alltheir splendour. One can also drive (or walk)
down Dr. Belcher Road through toR702 Dewetsdorp Road; turn rightinto the infamous Dinaweng Roadthat leads to the N6 to Kimberley.Lo and behold, day and night
they deck and adorn the roadsideswith their sparkling presencescattered along a dusty foot path.Society often chooses to quickly
frown upon the plight of theseladies, unjustly so.The entire community is
responsible for relegating these, our sisters and daughters, to theoutskirts of the corporate world, making them feel that their bodiesare the only assets they have leftto trade with. With high levels of unemploy-
ment, the ever-increasing price ofcommodities and cost for services, what exactly does society expectof the unemployed? This capitalist tendency of the
general public to let the poor dieso that the wealthy can enjoytheir indulgences is appalling tosay the least.
Women who use their bodies toearn their survival have equallyas much right as do those whouse other people while theythemselves slumber.Isn’t that what is done to mine
and construction workers?South Africa is not a socialist
economy, so it is everybody forthemselves out there.Wouldn’t it be better, if every
government official who holdsmore than one position, shed justone for an unemployed person? Many people have dependents
and yet they remain unemployed.A child does not want to know ifthe parent is employed or not.The child does not care about
the parent’s work ethics. All the child wants is food and
clothes, not sentiments. To perpetuate and build on what
our forefathers did, we climbboastfully into our subsidised carsand drive to these places wheresex workers park to demand their‘forbidden’ services, and pay forthem.“While we busk sheepishly in our
pretentious high moral standards, let us hear their silent cries: Takefortress behind the wind; Wraparound a flickering flame; Leanagainst a tottering wall; Hold tightand let no go; for He comes”The Hurricane.

WITH the winter on ourdoorstep, one of the biggestproblems many motoristsexperience is with theirbatteries. From batteries running down,
to the car not wanting to startat all on those cold wintermornings.Express went out to find out
why motorists experience theseproblems and had a chat with aprofessional about this.Auto electrician Johnny
Tabole gave expert advice tosolve or help prevent some ofthese common problemsbrought on by winter.
Why do motorists typicallyexperience problems withtheir batteries during winter?Batteries tend to run down in
winter mainly because thebattery’s acid gets cold andbecause of this, the car mightstruggle to start, but once itdoes, it will start normally forthe rest of the day.
How long does a standardcar battery last? Most standard batteries have
a warranty of about 18 months.
What everyday things can amotorist do to prolong thelifespan of his car’s battery? You can extend the life of
your car’s battery by servicingit regularly (by professionalbattery specialists), and you canalso check it regularly for leaksand out of the ordinary things.
How would one check theircar battery? You can check that the
battery terminals (on the car)and battery poles (on thebattery) are always clean.
What should you never dowhen it comes to your car’sbattery?Never swop the battery
terminals (by connecting thenegative terminal to thepositive pole or vice versa) asthis can seriously damage youralternator and never rev yourcar when it is idling and has nobattery inside.
Take care of you car’s battery

TRENDY Volkswagen models will be ondisplay for public viewing during aone-day Extreme Festival scheduled forSaturday (02/05) at the Phakisa Raceway.
The event marks this year’s 80th anni-versary of the Volkswagen Beetle, the 60thanniversary of the Karmann Ghia, and the60th anniversary of the VolkswagenKombi, in South Africa, along with the50th anniversary of Formula Vee racing inthis country.
If you are the owner of a VolkswagenBeetle, a Karmann Ghia, or the originalVolkswagen Kombi, bring your car andfamily to the Extreme Festival racemeeting at the Phakisa Raceway onSaturday.
There will be a special parking areadesignated for members of the public whobring their Volkswagen to show off andshare experiences with other Volkswagenenthusiasts. The participants will alsohave the opportunity to see the FormulaVees in action and meet and chat to thedrivers.
A Formula Vee is a single-seater racingcar, originally based almost entirely onVolkswagen Beetle components. The firstFormula Vees in South Africa ran a1 200 cc air-cooled Beetle motor in atubular space frame chassis with eitherfibre glass or aluminium body panels.
Other Beetle components included thebeam front suspension with the shockabsorbers mounted on the shock towers inthe standard Beetle configuration, theBeetle drum brakes, standard Beetle 15inch “Marie Biscuit” wheel rims and theBeetle steering box and gearbox. In order
to create a mid-engine single-seater racingcar, the engine and gearbox had to beturned around and the crown wheel andpinion mounted on the other side, in ordernot to end up with four reverse gears andonly one forward gear.
Over the years, the category has evolved. In 1968 the 1 200 cc air-cooled Beetle motorwas replaced with the 1 300 cc air-cooledBeetle motor.
Then in 1990, that was replaced with the1 300 cc water-cooled Citi Golf motor, usingan adaptor plate to mate it to the oldBeetle gearbox, which was retained and isstill in use today, along with the Beetlefront beam.
The Beetle steering box has, however, been replaced by rack and pinion steering, the shock absorber towers have beenremoved from the front beam and theshock absorbers mounted internally withpush and pull rods in front and a monoshock at the rear. The drum brakes havebeen replaced with disc brakes and magwheel rims are now in use, fitted withHankook semi-slick tyres.
The most recent engine upgrade tookplace in 2004, when the 1 300 cc water-cooled motor was replaced by the 1 400 ccCiti Golf motor, which is fitted with aregulated performance cam shaft and twincarburettors.
Saturday’s meeting offers the public achance to meet the drivers and to get aclose-up look at these amazing littlesingle-seater racing cars, especially if youdrive any of the Volkswagen productswhose components have been used by thecategory over the years. A number ofFormula Vee racing cars have also beenbuilt in Welkom and raced around the
country and at the old Welkom, Goldfieldscircuit, over the years and if you still haveone, dust it off, give it a bit of a spit andpolish, bring it to Phakisa and put it ondisplay, along with the Beetles, KarmannGhias and Kombis. Enthusiasts are sure tolove seeing it again.
In addition to the South African Natio-nal Championship Formula Vee races, theprogramme also includes races for G & H
Transport Extreme Super Cars, Consol VWChallenge, Red Square Kawasaki ZX10RMasters Cup, Thunderbikes/Sub 10Superbikes, Silverton Bolt and NutChallenge, National Sports Car Challengeand the Phakisa 200, to be contested by afull field of speed and Sound 111 Sportsand Saloons, together with the Leisure-grass/Northern Bolt and Tool Superhatchcategory.

A SURVEY conducted by the EndangeredWildlife Trust (EWT) revealed some of thecauses of wildlife killed by passing traffic, commonly referred to as roadkill, in SouthAfrica.
The survey was conducted by the EWT inthe Pilanesberg National Park, North-West,from 21 October to 23 November 2014 andconsisted of on-site investigation of roadkill,as well as questionnaires completed byvisitors to the park.
Of the 120 incidents of roadkill observedby researchers, 62 were amphibians, 27reptiles, 20 birds, 10 were mammals and 1was unidentified.
Speed and roadkillOne of the most interesting aspects of the
project was the role inattentive driversplayed in animal deaths. The survey showedthat most drivers monitored adhered tospeed limits.
The EWT’s wildlife and roads projectleader, Wendy Collinson, said: “More than95% of respondents to the questionnairesurvey believe that speed is the sole causeof roadkill. Our aim was to investigate thisissue in more detail.”
Compliance with park speed limits wasdetermined to be high, with 72% of the 6 981vehicles monitored driving at or belowspeed limits. To investigate the role of speedin determining rates of roadkill, the re-search team placed fake animals on the roadand observed the behaviour of 201 drivers.
Collinson said: “Of these drivers, almost70% were considered to not be looking atthe road, but rather scanning the bush forwildlife.
“This suggests that many roadkill innational parks happen because of theexpectation that animals are to be found inthe habitat alongside the road, rather thanon the road.”
The team did not find a significantrelationship between the number of fakeanimals hit and the speed at which the
vehicles were travelling, with 71% of drivershitting animals when assessed to be drivingless than 20 km/h, 62% when driving at 20to 40 km/h and 74% driving more than60 km/h.
Collinson commented: “From our survey,it seems that observation levels of thedriver, rather than the speed of the vehicle,is the key factor in preventing roadkills.”
Drivers should be more aware“One of our recommendations from the
latest roadkill survey is that a driverawareness campaign be launched in parksto make drivers more aware of animals onthe roads themselves.”
She said she was concerned about the lowawareness levels of animals killed on theroad among park visitors.
Collinson said: “Of the 284 respondentswho had visited a park previously, only2,8% had noticed roadkill, with 6,3%noticing a roadkill on their current visit.”
The next stage of the project will shortlycommence in the Addo Elephant NationalPark.

ASTRONOMERS at the SouthAfrican Astronomical Observa-tory (SAAO) and MassachusettsInstitute of Technology (MIT),America, have recently detect-ed what may be rings around aminor planet in our solarsystem named Chiron.
While the planet Saturn isfamous for its spectacular ringsystem, all the gassy giantplanets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranusand Neptune) have rings. Thereis also another object, a minorplanet called Chariklo, whichhas rings.
Chiron and Chariklo belongto a class of minor planetscalled centaurs: small rockybodies that possess propertiesof both asteroids and comets. These objects are found in aband between the orbits ofJupiter and Pluto.
Prior to the discovery ofChariklo’s rings, scientists hadthought that centaurs wererelatively dormant objects. Thelatest discovery of a possiblering system around anothercentaur, Chiron, if confirmed, suggests that ring systems arefar more common in our solarsystem than previously thought.
“Until Chariklo’s rings werefound, it was commonlybelieved that these smallerbodies did not have a ringsystem. The likelihood thatChiron also has a ring systemprompts fundamental questionsabout how planetary rings form
and evolve,” says Dr AmandaGulbis (SAAO), co-investigatorin the study.
Gulbis at the South AfricanAstronomical Observatory andher collaborators were firstalerted to the possibility thatChiron has a ring systemfollowing observations conduct-ed in November 2011.
Chiron was observed passingin front of a bright star, anevent known as a stellaroccultation. Using Nasa’sInfrared Telescope Facility onMauna Kea, Hawaii, and the LasCumbres Observatory GlobalTelescope Network at Haleaka-la, Hawaii, astronomers moni-tored the brightness of thestar’s light as it was occulted byChiron.
In addition to seeing theexpected drop in brightness asChiron passed in front of thestar, they identified features inthe data indicative of a disk ofdebris around the centaur. Thefeatures could be explained byeither a ring system around thecentaur, a circular shell of gasand dust around the centaur, orsymmetric jets of materialshooting out from the centaur’ssurface.
In order to observe theoccultation event, astronomershad to work out if and whenthe centaur would pass in frontof a bright star. They begancharting the orbits of Chironand nearby stars in 2010 inorder to pinpoint exactly whenthe centaur might occult a
bright star. They calculated that a stellar
occultation would occur on 29November 2011, and reservedtime on two large telescopes inhopes of observing the event. They knew they would have tobe fortunate to catch theoccultation which would lastjust a few minutes.
Dr Amanda Bosh, a leader onthe project and a lecturer inMIT’s Department of Earth,Atmospheric and PlanetarySciences, says: “There’s anaspect of serendipity to theseobservations. We need acertain amount of luck, waitingfor Chiron to pass in front of astar that is bright enough.Chiron itself is small enoughthat the event is very short; ifyou blink, you might miss it.”
The group analysed the lightreceived from the star duringthe occultation event anddetected something unexpect-ed. A simple body, with nosurrounding material, wouldcreate a straightforwardpattern, blocking the star’s lightentirely. However, astronomerswere surprised to find that asmall fraction of light from thestar was blocked just beforeand just after Chiron passed infront of it.
There were actually two dipsin brightness before and afterthe occultation suggesting thatthere could be two separaterings of material around thecentaur. Judging from the dipsin intensity of the star’s light,
astronomers have calculatedthat the two possible rings arelocated about 300 km from thecentre of the centaur and arearound 3 km and 7 km widerespectively and separated by adistance of around 7,5 km.
Astronomers are, however, uncertain as to exactly whatform this obscuring materialactually takes: It could be rings,a shell of gas and dust orsymmetrical jets of gas anddust shooting out from thecentaur’s surface.
“This result is particularlyinteresting because Chiron is acentaur – a relatively small, cold object that has an unstableorbit in the region of the giantplanets. How does a body thatis only a few hundred kilome-ters in diameter, and who’sorbit is only stable for a fewmillion years, have a ringsystem?” asked Gulbis.
Several explanations havebeen put forward to explainhow the centaur Chiron couldhave gained rings. One possibili-ty is that another minor bodybroke up and the resultingdebris was captured gravitation-ally around Chiron. Alternative-ly, the rings may have formedfrom leftover material from theformation of Chiron itself.
“Another possibility involvesthe history of Chiron’s distancefrom the sun. Centaurs mayhave started further out in thesolar system and, throughgravitational interactions withgiant planets, have had their
orbits perturbed closer in tothe sun,” says Jessica Ruprecht,a student at the MIT’s LincolnLaboratory, who was the leadauthor on the manuscript.
“The frozen material thatwould have been stable outpast Pluto is becoming lessstable closer in, and can turninto gasses that spray dust andmaterial off the surface of abody.”
An independent group hassince combined the dataobtained from this study withother data, and has concludedthat the features around Chironmost likely represented a ringsystem.
However, researchers willhave to observe more stellaroccultations of Chiron to trulydetermine which interpretation:rings, shell or jets, is thecorrect one.
“If we want to make a strongcase for rings around Chiron,we’ll need observations bymultiple observers, distributedover a few hundred kilometers,so that we can map the ringgeometry,” says Ruprecht. “Butthat alone doesn’t tell us if therings are a temporary featureof Chiron, or a more perma-nent one. There’s a lot of workthat needs to be done.”
The results from this studyhave been published in thejournal Icarus.) Dr Nicola Loaring is anastronomer at the SouthAfrican Astronomical Observa-tory (SAAO).

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC will look tobounce back from their previous AbsaPremiership defeat when they travel to PortElizabeth to face struggling Chippa United atthe Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednes-day (29/04) at 19:30. After humiliating thestar-studded Mamelodi Sundowns by 5-0 inAtteridgeville two weeks ago, Celtic suffereda defeat at the hands of Maritzburg United intheir next fixture, going down 0-1 at home. The Mangaung outfit have claimed 37 pointsfrom 26 matches and they will look to collectmore points to cement their top-eightstanding in their remaining four fixtures.Their next three league opponents are AjaxCape Town, Free State Stars (both at theFree State Stadium), before wrapping uptheir 2013-’14 campaign at Moroka Swallowson 9 May.
Phunya Sele Sele are placed fifth on thelog and they are likely to finish the seasonin the same position if they win all theirremaining games.
“Our target at the start of the season wasto finish the campaign as high as the fourthposition,” John Maduka, Celtic manager, toldExpress.
“But if we cannot achieve that, we wouldbe happy to finish the season on fifthposition. We are hoping to win all ourremaining games to achieve our target.Apart from Ajax, who are fighting for atop-eight spot, we are going to face teamsthat are in danger of relegation,” he said.
“All those matches are going to be diffi-cult, but we are going to fight very hard towin them. We want to be among the top fiveclubs when the season ends on 9 May.”
Maduka, who was born in Malawi, butmoved to South Africa to further his footballcareer in 1996, has appealed to those whowere responsible for xenophobic attacks tostop it because it gave the country a badname.
“It is sad to see so many foreign nationalsbeing attacked by the minority of SouthAfricans. I know the majority of the localcitizens are against these xenophobic attacks. Please let us stop those acts. Let us be unitedand say NO to xenophobia. It does not matterwhere we come from. “We all are Africansand we need each other,” concluded Maduka, who has obtained South African citizenship.) There are 97 foreign players who areplying their trade at different Premier SoccerLeague (PSL) clubs who greatly entertainlocal soccer fans week in, week out. TheExpress staff therefore strongly condemn theviolent attacks on foreign nationals.
