BUILDING PROJECT UPDATE Remember that Project List shared at our Annual Meeting?

Here’s some new information about those important projects:

The kitchen upgrade was our top priority and had a deadline of June 1. We almost

made it! Today you’ll find a new refrigerator, a code-friendly stainless 3 bin sink,

plumbing upgrades, custom countertops and cabinet, new paint and a good scrubbing.

The pantry was also rearranged and new shelves are now installed. Total Cost (so far):

$12,262.38 from the generous Lorraine Olson estate.

Our gutters have many holes and leaks causing water to pool in window wells in the

Narthex and Banquet Room. This causes staining and swelling. This project is up next.

We’re just waiting to see if our bids (ranging from $15,000 - $25,587) are still good

since they’re a few months old.

It makes sense to replace the outside storms and screens before repairing our stained

glass windows so the stained glass is properly protected. Bids for this project depend

upon how many storms and screens we can afford to do right away and whether we wrap

or repaint the frames. The 11 sanctuary windows are of highest priority and will increase

energy efficiency in the sanctuary. Bids for these 11 windows range from $6,000 to

$9,850.

Our stained glass windows are so fragile - it’s dangerous to

open them! The ropes and pulleys within the frames are broken

and need replacing. The cost per window varies based on the re-

pairs necessary. They will be repaired one or two at a time. The

bid for 8 stained glass windows is just under $40,000.

Zion finished the month of October with a negative cash flow of ($3,337). We are still forecasting to fin-ish the year with a balanced budget. Our committee will be focused on finalizing our 2013 budget in December. We are looking for ways to generate an additional $7,000 to grow our operating budget next year. The details of the proposed 2013 budget were discussed during the stewardship forum on November 4. 2013 Time and Talent Surveys and Pledge Cards were collected during worship on No-vember 18. If you didn’t have a chance to bring them to church, please mail them to the church office, to the attention of the Financial Secretary.

A copy of the current Treasurer’s Report is posted on the bulletin board in the Banquet Room. Thank you to everyone who has given and continues to support our ministry at Zion. The summaries below are a snapshot of the health of our congregation:

Birthdays for JULY 2014 Altar Flowers

June 1—30, 2014

June 1: A perennial plant for the outside garden was

given by Dick and Joan Olson in honor and celebration of

Andy and Rachel’s anniversary.

June 8: A perennial plant for the outside garden was

given by Beverly and Darlene Carlson in memory of loved

ones.

A rose on the altar was in honor of Robert Nelson for his

Hendrickson in celebration of their 41st anniversary.

June 22: A perennial plant for the outdoor garden was

given by Gary Larsen in memory of his mother.

given by Matt and Pastor Meta Carlson in celebration of

their 6th anniversary.

Amazing! The June ZOOM CAN DO Sunday at Zion brought in 102 pounds

of nonperishable food, dish soap, diapers and more for the ZOOM Food

Shelf. Zion folks are generous! Our thanks!

Watch for more details on the upcoming ZOOM Ice Cream Social on Sun-

day, September 7th!! Noon—2pm

ZOOM House is full again! When folks move on to permanent housing (or

other places) it usually takes less than a week before their apartment is fur-

nished and someone new moves in!

Friday, June 27th, a group of teens from English and St. Luke Lutheran

Churches in Medina & Streeter, North Dakota, came to Minneapolis for a

Mission Trip. They spent the most part of the day playing with ZOOM chil-

dren, organizing the ZOOM library, straightening out the ZOOM Food Shelf

AND they brought lots of items to add to the Food Shelf! Our Thanks for

all their work

From Pastor Meta… Lutherans don’t talk about the devil too often. So isn’t it strange that we bring him up in the baptismal liturgy? In the midst of cute outfits, water sprinkled, and nostalgic hymns, we “renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God”. Those are powerful words - easier said than done! I don’t spend much time worrying about the devil in particular – instead I get anxious about my fear of death. Not death in the “end of life” sense, mind you, but death in its daily and sneaky form. I worry about failing. I worry about scarcity and not having enough. I worry about stuff ending before I’m ready to say goodbye. And perhaps the devil has something to do with all of these things. But when I’m wrapped up in that worry, I miss out on abundant life. I miss getting swept up in the Holy Spirit’s plans, and the seasons of this world, and the little ways I am being transformed every day. It’s easy to forget that change is a big part of abundant life because it often feels clunky, inconvenient, or scary. Solveig and Tove will be baptized at Zion’s outdoor service on Sunday, July 27. There will be cute outfits, water sprinkled, and nostalgic hymns. Then we will renounce the devil. And in doing so, we will reject every unproductive worry, every stubborn tendency, every fear of death. Because we believe in a God who says death is never the end. That change is abundant life. That out of every ending rises new beginnings. Again, those are powerful words - easier said than done! And so we will say them together, making them true with our bodies and voices united. In doing so, the girls will become proof of the promises we cling to and the new beginnings that await!

BUILDING PROJECT UPDATE continued from page 1

Kitchen Upgrades: We are grateful to Lorraine Olson! Her generous estate gift made this transformation possible.

Our Gutters: We do not have any money designated for this specific project, but we do have approximately $15,000 designated to “building maintenance”. This project would require all of those funds.

Storm Windows: Some of you have designated gifts to this fund over the years. This account now has a balance of $7,605.

Stained Glass Window Repairs: Memorial Gifts to Zion’s Endowment Fund have been designated for the windows and cur-rently total about $2,200. The Property Committee has also received verbal commitments of $2,500 toward this project.

Each of these updates is important and necessary to the maintenance of Zion’s property. We will continue accepting bids and moving forward on each update as it becomes the priority project and we have the funds to begin responsibly. We are grateful for the funds received so far and welcome additional gifts that can keep us moving forward. If you are passionate about one of these projects and wish to be a more active part of the process, please let us know.

Gratefully, Pastor Meta, Deana, and Carl

EVER BEEN TO A SAINTS BASEBALL GAME?

How about going to the game on July 20th, at 1:05pm. Grandstand seats are $14, $13 for seniors and kids. We could put together a group from Zion and head for the ball game!! Talk to Nedra Granquist as soon as possible to tell her “I am interested in going to the SAINTS Game!!” The word is there is lots of fun to be had at their games!!!

Sunday Servant Teams & Coffee Hour

Hosting coffee hour has been stretching Sunday Servant Teams a little thin. Starting this month, the teams are just in charge of leadership within the sanctuary while separate sign-up sheets are posted for all leadership op-portunities outside of the sanc-tuary (nursery, Sunday school, counting, and coffee hour hosts). If you are interested in stepping away from some responsibility or you’d like to learn something new, please contact Pastor Meta.

THANKS to all for the support of the Heart Walk at Zion. The Blue Impact Team recruited 93 Walkers involving 15 Lyndale Walkers.

Saturday morning, May 31st, was a beautiful morn-ing to join 10,000 people at Target Field for a stroll. We had walkers coming from all over the state: Kenyon, MN; Virginia, MN; Hudson, WI AND Lyn-dale neighborhood.

Lyndale Walker Jeanne Wiener found participation to be especially meaningful. Friday night a friend of hers collapsed, was taken to the hospital where she underwent heart surgery. Jeanne’s friend thank-fully survived.

Notes from Jane

Here are a few highlights for July:

Pastor Meta’s daughters will be baptized during our outdoor service on Sunday, July 27! We will celebrate with special music: flute, strings, and keyboard. Join us in a celebration of baptismal promises!

I’m grateful to all who filled out and returned the June worship survey. Your ideas and feedback help guide our seasonal planning. They will also fuel conversation at the open worship meeting after the service on Sunday, June 29. Thank you!

The banner cabinet is finished! Thanks to funds given in memory of Elaine Klingman, the banner cabinet will store our worship banners so they are better organized and preserved. All the work done on this project is greatly appreciated.

Do you have ideas for the music ministry at Zion? I’d love to hear your thoughts and interest. Let me know!

Jane Hanson, Music Director

THANK YOU to all the members of the Zion com-munity for your prayers and words of encouragement

during my unemployment. It was a very challenging seven months and your support was greatly appreci-ated. I am thrilled to be starting work at Securian Financial (formerly Minnesota Mutual) in downtown St. Paul on June 30th as the Training Manager in their Life Products division. I am thankful to God for this new chapter in my life.

Stan Nelson

We are a Fairview Asso-ciation Congregation Did you know the Fairview Association has 77 congrega-tional partnerships? Gary Lar-sen and LuAnn Giles recently attended the annual dinner for congregations and represented Zion. Bruce Pederson, man-ager of Church Relations, will be meeting with Pastor Meta and others interested in Zion’s relationship with Fairview. All are welcome to join the con-versation on Tuesday, July 1 at 11am in the Memorial Lounge.

VOLUNTEER IN THE NURS-ERY ON SUNDAY MORN-INGS

Like to play or color with kids? Like to read stories with kids? Ever played Let’s Go Fishing? Or Break the Ice? If so, talk to Deana about signing up for a Sunday in Zion’s Nursery.

Anisa is there every Sunday. She teams up with one volunteer each week so we always have two adults in the nursery. Atten-dance is anywhere from 1-7 kids and the volunteer schedule ro-tates so the commitment is only occasional. Why not give it a try!

SUMMER ALTAR FLOWERS

This season you can sign up for flowers to

be placed on the altar OR you can request

the purchase of a perennial that will be

planted on the South Lawn. The cost is

still $25.00 and you can give this gift in

honor/memory of someone or something.

Contact Deana in the church office to sign up or for more

information.

CAN YOU HELP MOW THE LAWN?

We spend a lot of time on the south lawn each summer. Outdoor worship Sundays, Wednesday night dinners, and Youth Farm all gather outside each week.

Sign up to mow Zion’s lawn one week this summer. We have a mower you can use and mowing can be flexible around your schedule. Help us keep Zion’s curb appeal high!

PROPERTY COMMITTEE NEWS Deana Miller, Chair

FIRST SATURDAYS happen and lots of work is accomplished! We are thankful for the volunteers that come and help! This is a monthly work day when we complete a variety of tasks that are necessary to keep the building looking good! Without a custodian or maintenance person, it requires teamwork, time, and energy to keep Zion’s property running well. The July FIRST SATURDAY is moved to July 12th due to the 4th of July holiday weekend. Just show up around 10 am and work as long as you’re able. There are both inside and outside tasks, light duties and some heavier duties. You pick and choose!

Hopefully we can get the air conditioners installed before too long. If not before, maybe on the next FIRST SATURDAY.

The kitchen upgrade is about done! There are a few things to tackle yet but we are basically done. It is bright and shiny and we hope to keep it that way!

Next we will begin working on the gutter replacement project and the outside window project. We do have some bids and have met with some contractors and will soon be moving forward. The gutters are leaking and outside doors get water soaked (and then they stick!) and sometimes water runs into one of the window wells and into the Banquet Room.

The Property Committee: Alden Anderson, Roger Dokken, Dale Mendenhall, Deana Miller, John & Norma Pietz. Con-tact these leaders if you have property questions or concerns. If you are passionate about a particular project, join us in a limited/focused capacity. We welcome your ideas and energy.

THE CLMO COMMITTEE Chair Dennis Werneke (Congregational Life & Mission Outreach)

Fish Fest was one activity on our radar. Due to stormy weather it was moved from 33rd & Harriet to the LNA offices. Smart move!

The Congregational picnic was the next activity. CLMO members and Sunday Servant Team 4 worked together to make it happen.

Plans are in the works to be a part of the Open Nicollet street festival in September. If you are interested in doing a “short shift” serving lemonade, let Dennis know!

Committee members are Dennis Werneke, Nedra Gran-quist, LuAnn Giles, Gary Larsen, Deana Miller, Joan Olson and Pastor Meta.

Worship Committee meets on the second Sunday of

the month at 11:15am. This is a good time for folks to share their input with the committee.

The new Banner Closet is now in use! Tammy and Sandy have begun the task of sorting banners and hanging them in the new closet.

A Worship Survey has been shared with the congregation and the comments were shared and discussed at a forum on June 29th. Hope you completed yours and participated!

Outdoor worship this summer is exciting. Be sure you at-tend! Guest musicians will be a part of the experience.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE Members are Jane Hanson, Tammy Fuentes, Bill Robbins, Marilyn Nyberg, Nina Al-len and Pastor Meta.

LEARNING COMMITTEE NOTES

Sunday School is on summer hiatus until after Labor Day in September. Recruitment of teachers will begin shortly. We were most grateful for the seven folks who volunteered to teach in rotation last year. If you are interested, let the church office know or talk to Deana. The Nursery continues to be open during the summer, with the exception of the outdoor worship services. We are thank-ful that Anisa is available to be our ‘consistent nursery attendant’. Zion’s liability rules state that there must be two folks in the Nursery with the children. We appreciate the folks who are willing to spend a Sunday or three being in the Nursery during worship. If you are not currently on the rotation list and are interested, please call the church office or talk to De-ana. Scheduling of the Forums held on the first Sunday of each month (October—May) has begun. There will be a variety of interesting forums starting in October. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, talk to Stan Due. The Learning Committee is Stan Due, Chair; Patty Kane, JPeggy Stevenson, LuAnn Giles and Deana Miller.

In my conversation with staff at THE CHAIR, the newest beauty salon in Zion’s neighborhood—I learned that they no collect the caps to return them to Aveda … as the City of Minneapolis recycles them now! He said they collected them for a long time and now just put them in the “one sort bin” for recycling! We will recycle what is here—and encourage you to do the same!

As you can see, Zion is a busy building! If you are having a meeting here, please schedule it in ad-vance! If you don’t, you may not have a place to meet! And—if you do schedule a meeting and de-cide NOT to meet, it is helpful to know that also.

ZION’S JULY WISH LIST: HOSPITALITY OUTSIDE

FEWER BUMPS!

We recently had several potholes in our parking lot repaired and the lot is much smoother now! We are grateful for the good deal we got on the asphalt, but the company took it upon themselves to patch more square footage than we planned to pay for. After some impressive negotiation by Carl Hendrickson, we received a bill for $6,000. If you appreciate the work done and would like to help offset this unexpected cost, please do! While it is an expensive repair, Gary Larsen joked that there is good news: “The gift shop at the bottom of that big pothole is now closed for business and we won’t lose any more children down there.”

MORE TREES! The south lawn and parking lot landscaping looks great this year! We hope to buy a little more black dirt and plant a few more trees on the east and north side. If you have been impressed by the landscaping upgrades and wish to make a gift toward this next stage, please do!

NEW Volunteer Opportunity:

Grace Hospice Augustana Care and Mt. Olivet are teaming up to provide quality hospice care in the Augustana Care Center. This new ministry is seeking volunteers to provide comfort and company to those in the last stages of life. If you would like to learn more about Grace Hospice and their volunteer training program (just 12 hours!), contact Chaplain Bonnie Nash at (612) 238-0034.
