COMMUNION SERVICE

Welcome and Announcements

8:30/10:30 Hymn: “Come, Thou Almighty King” page 11

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, C: Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, C: We poor sinners confess to you, that we are by nature sinful and

unclean, and that we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed. We flee for refuge to your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

P: The Almighty and Merciful God grant to you, being penitent, pardon and remission of all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of his Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

FIRST READING: DEUTERONOMY 5: 12–1512{Moses said,} “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your

2

female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.’”

SECOND READING: 2 CORINTHIANS 4: 5–125For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12So death is at work in us, but life in you.

GOSPEL: MARK 2: 23––3: 623One Sabbath {Jesus} was going through the grain fields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”1Again {Jesus} entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness

3

of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

(10:30 Service) EAGLE SCOUT PRESENTATION

(10:30 Service) AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM page 9

(8:30 Service) THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISMfor: Warren Mitchell Cowden

P: In holy baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the church which is the body of Christ. As we live with him and with his people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. Trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Warren baptized?Parent: I do.

PRESENTATIONP: As you present Warren for baptism in Christian love, you are entrusted with

gifts & responsibilities: LIVE with him among God’s faithful people, BRING him to the services of worship in God’s house, TEACH him the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As he grows in years, you should: PLACE in his hands the Holy Scriptures, PROVIDE for him instruction in the Christian faith, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and lead godly lives until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations?Parent I do.

P: Family and friends, do you promise to nurture Warren in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God’s Spirit, help him live in the covenant of baptism, support and pray for him in his new life in Christ? We do.

4

RENUNCIATION OF EVILP: I ask you to reject sin, profess your faith in Christ, and confess the faith of

the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?

C: I renounce them.Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?

C: I renounce them.Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?

C: I renounce them.Do you turn to Christ as your Lord and Savior?

C: In faith I turn to Christ

PROFESSION OF FAITHP: Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father,He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

(*which means “the holy Christian church”)THE THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty, you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring, you are the fire of rebirth. Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams. Honor to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow. Your waters are below us, around

5

us, above us: our life is born in you. You are the fountain of resurrection.

Praise to you for your saving waters: Noah and the animals survived the flood, Hagar discovered your well. The Israelites escaped through the sea, and they drank from your gushing rock. Naaman washed away his disease, and the Samaritan woman’s thirst was satisfied.

At this font, holy God, we pray: Praise to you for the water of baptism and for your Word that saves us in this water. Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation. Illumine our days. Enliven our bones. Dry our tears. Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us.

Satisfy all our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

BAPTISMWarren, I baptize you in the name of the Father, (water is poured)

And of the Son, (water is poured again)And of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (water is poured a final time)Blessed be God, the source of all life, the word of salvation, and the spirit of mercy! Amen.

LAYING ON OF HANDSLet us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your child, Warren new birth. Wash him from sin, and raise him to eternal life. (The presiding minister lays both hands on the head of the newly baptized.)

Sustain Warren with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.

SEALING WITH THE SIGN OF THE CROSS & ANOINTING WITH OIL

6

(In the Old Testament, the anointing of oil signifies a person being chosen by God. The sign of the cross is made on the forehead of each of the baptized. As the sign of the cross is made, the minister says:)Warren, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit, and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen.

THE BAPTISMAL CANDLE(A lighted candle is given to the newly baptized. This candle connects the death & resurrection of Jesus with our baptismal death & resurrection to new life.)

Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Receive this baptismal candle which is to be lighted at each anniversary of Warren’s baptism as a reminder of the glory and obligation which Baptism bestows.Let us pray: O God, the giver of life, look with kindness upon this family. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for him. Strengthen them in their own baptism, so they may share eternally with Warren the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRESENTATION and WELCOME(The pastor presents the newly baptized to the congregation.)C: We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a

fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.

May the Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor (+), and give you his peace. Amen.
