WELS SCHOOLS The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) has a long tradition of high academic quality in its elementary schools. The WELS (www.wels.net) has operated elementary schools for over 150 years. Currently, WELS congregations and associations of congregations operate 425 early childhood ministries, 315 elementary schools, and 25 high schools across the country. Christ-centered education is the purpose of our schools, but high academic excellence is also something for which we strive. This desire for excellence is reflected in the number of children enrolled in our schools. The WELS has provided excellent instructors for these schools by training its own teachers at Martin Luther College (www.mlc-wels.edu) and its predecessor, Dr. Martin Luther College, since 1884. On average, students attending Lutheran schools tend to score higher than their peers on national achievement tests. Praise be to God for the wonderful blessings he has given our WELS schools!

MISSION STATEMENT AND FOCUS MISSION STATEMENT Zion Evangelical Lutheran School assists parents in training their children to know Jesus and to live for Him. FOCUS Our Lord tells us that children are a gift of his grace, and that parents are responsible for their children in many areas, such as providing a home, clothing, food, and love. However, the most key area of parental responsibility is spiritual training. God's directions to parents are clear:

o “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

o “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

o “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

The primary responsibility for spiritual training lies with parents, not the church. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church operates this school to assist Christians in carrying out their directive from Christ to “Feed my lambs,” John 21:15, and “Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” Matthew 28:20. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is also privileged to reach out with the gospel to others not affiliated with our congregation, and so when circumstances permit, children who are not affiliated with our congregation may be enrolled in our school.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19

PHILOSOPHY, PURPOSE, AND OBJECTIVES PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE Zion Evangelical Lutheran School's philosophy is based on the eternal truths of God's Word. These truths include the sure knowledge that:

o “All Scripture is God-breathed, useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16

o There is one true, triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16-17

o God the Father is the Maker and Preserver of heaven and earth and all that is in them. Exodus 20:11

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 5

o Man by nature is sinful, fully deserving God's wrath. Psalm 51:5

o The same holy and just God “so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16

o All who through the work of the Holy Spirit believe that Jesus is their Savior receive the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:16

o God in his grace has given us different talents and gifts. Romans 12:6-8

o Believers will strive to use those gifts in ways that will give God the glory and show love for him and all people. Psalm 96:3

o Believers will desire to gain a greater knowledge of the Holy Scriptures that they might be able to tell those who ask the reason for their hope of eternal life. 1 Peter 3:15

o Believers will look for opportunities to proclaim the good news of salvation to all people. Mark 16:15

This philosophy will guide our school's every decision, activity and relationship. As we impart these truths to our children, the Lord will guide them in the maximum development of the spiritual, physical, and mental abilities he has given them. OBJECTIVES

o Teach God's Word diligently

o Support Christian parenting and home life, thereby strengthening the base of human society

o Foster a rich devotional life as a source of spiritual strength in our students

o Nurture the dedication to God of time, talents, and treasures in a life of faithful service

o Promote Christian citizenship grounded in obedience to God and his Word

o Strengthen the congregation and the church in general through the training of Christian lay-people

o Teach the elementary and middle school curriculums with excellence o Foster daily Christian student fellowship as an important factor in building character and in training for Christian

living

Non-Discrimination Policy Zion Lutheran School admits students of any race, color, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities available. Zion Lutheran School does not discriminate based on race, color, or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

New Student Application and Enrollment Process, Returning Student Re-Enrollment Process, Tuition and Fees Students applying for Preschool must be completely potty-trained before they are considered for admission. Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 6

2. Apply - Complete the online enrollment application. Be sure to request your child’s records from previous

schools. These will be needed prior to your child’s acceptance to Zion.

3. Decision - Zion Lutheran School’s Board of Christian Education will consider your application, with a

recommendation from the principal or director. You will be notified of the decision as soon as possible. At this

point, a meeting and/or placement test with the student may also be requested. Since the school is an extension

of the church, the pastor may also schedule a visit to discuss the church.

4. Admission - Upon acceptance, you will receive an email with your TADS code. Use that code to create an

account. Once the account is created, the school will be notified.

5. Enrollment - In June, you will receive a Registration Packet with paperwork you’ll need to fill out (Registration

Form, Emergency Contact Form, Family/School Partnership Form). Please note that Zion will also need your

child’s immunizations.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD All new students are subject to a probationary review period. At the end of the first six weeks (mid-quarter reports) the child will be evaluated by his/her teacher and the Board of Christian Education in order to determine the permanent enrollment status of the child. If we cannot meet the child’s behavioral, academic, or spiritual needs, the parents may be advised to transfer their child to another school.

Returning Student Re-Enrollment Process

1. Returning students will be sent an email from TADS on February 1, 2018. This email contains a unique code for creating a TADS account. Once the account is created, the school will be notified of re-enrollment.

2. In June, enrolled students will receive a Registration Packet with paperwork you’ll need to fill out (Registration Form, Emergency Contact Form, Family/School Partnership Form). Please note that Zion will also need your child’s immunizations.

BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (BCE) ADMISSION POLICY We encourage all students who are interested in a quality, Christian education to apply at Zion Lutheran School. If classroom space becomes limited, the BCE will admit new enrolling families to Zion Lutheran in the following order:

1. Members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church 2. Members of other WELS (Wisconsin Synod) or ELS (Evangelical Lutheran Synod) churches 3. Children of un-churched parents 4. Children of parents of other church bodies

TUITION and FEES Tuition at Zion Lutheran School does not cover the full cost of educating each child. Zion believes in the Lord’s command to “let the children come” and strives to keep tuition costs as low as possible, while still adhering to our excellent educational standards. We therefore rely upon the commitment of our parents to pay tuition and volunteer at Zion (cleaning, SSC, etc.) The actual cost of educating each child at Zion is just above $6000. We are incredibly grateful for the support and generosity of Zion’s church members whose weekly offerings help to keep tuition well below cost. Tuition at Zion Lutheran School is carefully assessed by the Pastor, Principal, and the Board of Education. Zion acknowledges that families have many choices when deciding to send their children to school, and we are grateful you’ve chosen Zion.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 7

All tuition and fees are paid through TADS (Tuition Aid Data Services). After a new student is accepted or when a returning family is re-enrolling, families are asked to create an account and choose a payment plan. Before and After School Bills and Extracurricular Activity Fees will be added to families’ TADS accounts during the school year. Families can choose from these payment options in TADS:

1. Full tuition payment made by June 1, 2018 (10% discount given)* 2. ½ Tuition paid in August 2018; ½ paid in January 2019* 3. 10 payments each month on either the 1st or 15th of the month. Payments begin in August 2018.**

*No TADS processing fee **$50 TADS processing fee Annual Fees

• Activity Fee: $25/preschool child; $50/grades K-8 child

• Book fees due on Registration Night: $35-$125 (depending on grade level)

• Yearbook (optional) fee $15/book

• Extended Care fees ($6/hour if child is at school before 8:00 am or after 3:45 pm) billed monthly.

• Extracurricular fees may be charged for sports and other extracurriculars throughout the year. Grant-In-Aid It is Zion's policy that no member child should be denied a Christian elementary school education due to financial problems. Therefore, in cases where such circumstances prevail, the parents or guardians are asked to fill out a Grant-in-aid application. The Board of Education considers such applications if their child or children will be enrolled in the K-8 grades. In the event a student is expelled from school, there will be NO REFUND of tuition money which had been paid to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The tuition rates for the current year can be found on our website.

Preschool Policies HISTORY In the spring of 1985, the members of Zion decided to start a preschool for the 1985-1986 school year. The first year would be limited to ten 4-year-old children. Through God's grace, many children have been taught the saving message of Jesus Christ the Savior from sin. We are truly thankful for this blessing as well as the many other blessings that have been ours through our Lutheran Elementary School and Preschool. PURPOSE The educational training of children of all ages is important and is primarily the responsibility of the parents. However, since God has told the church to assist the parents with the training of their children, our preschool program is part of Zion's Christian education program, along with its Lutheran Elementary School. During these early childhood days, the school is to primarily help the child grow spiritually by teaching Christian truths as found in God's Word. Also, through other varied activities in the preschool, the children will grow intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 8

OBJECTIVES Our objectives are to satisfy the needs of children in these areas:

A. The need to trust: 1. God's will in all situations. 2. Parents. 3. Teachers. 4. Others.

B. The need to explore God's gift of: 1. Senses. 2. Vocabulary. 3. Capabilities. 4. Environment. 5. Creative abilities.

C. The need to love others by: 1. Sharing. 2. Taking turns. 3. Respecting.

Play is the child's work. Much of their sensory-motor play is preparation for later cognitive development. Our goal is to open a young child's awareness of their Lord's world and stir their inquisitiveness. It can help them accept themselves as they are, a special and unique child of God. PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT AND TUITION All who enroll must agree to the purpose for which the school was established, as set forth in the PURPOSE and OBJECTIVES, and to all conditions set forth in the STUDENT HANDBOOK. Children of Zion and sister congregations will be given first consideration. Children of non-members will be accepted under the following conditions -- that the parents:

1. Have a sincere interest in Christian education. 2. Be willing to participate in the activities of the preschool. 3. Be willing to support the religious instruction of their children (help with memory work at home, family

devotions, prayers, etc.). Applications are subject to the approval of the principal, the pastor, and the Board of Education. See Enrollment Policy p.5

NON-DISCRIMINATORY POLICY Zion Evangelical Lutheran Preschool School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration policies, athletic or other school-administered programs. PRESCHOOL CLASS SIZES We maintain a class size that represents a ratio of no more than 1 to 9 (Teacher and Assistant to students). AGE OF THE CHILD Children must be three/four/five years-old by September 30 of that school year for our preschool program. The preschool program will enroll students ages 3-5 or on a needs basis if necessary. All students entering preschool must be toilet trained.

PRESCHOOL FORMS The following forms are to be given/submitted to school personnel upon registration:

1. Online Application 2. Birth Certificate copy 3. Health records: Immunization record copy. 4. Authorization for medical or surgical care. 5. Authorization for field trips.

TUITION AND FEES Tuition rates for the current year can be found on our website. PRESCHOOL CURRICULUM AND DEVELOPMENT OF GOD'S GIFTS

1. Spiritual: The child will have opportunity for group time, singing, learning about Bible concepts through various activities, and praying. Our curriculum is based on the following truths:

A. The Bible is God's Word and tells us our need for a Savior. B. God the Father is our Creator and cares for us. C. God the Son is our Savior and Lord who loves us sinners. D. God the Holy Spirit brings us to faith and helps us grow in our trust and obedience of God.

2. Personal/Social: The child will have opportunities to learn about himself/herself and his/her feelings, how to care for personal needs, and how to get along with adults and peers.

3. Language: The child will have frequent opportunities to listen, share ideas, and ask questions of both adults and other children. Learning to use language effectively is an important step toward learning to read in later years.

4. Motor: The child will have opportunities to learn control and mastery of large muscles used in body movement, and small muscle used for drawing, painting and constructing.

5. Aesthetics: The child will have opportunities to experience the joy of self-satisfaction that comes from creating artwork and music.

6. Cognitive: The child will have opportunities to develop the foundations for logical thinking and for math concepts introduced in later years through hands-on activities and by observing, matching, sorting and ordering.

PRESCHOOL DISCIPLINE POLICY While retaining primary jurisdiction, the parents accept the interpretation of God’s command, “Honor your father and your mother”, which states that the teacher is regarded as the God-appointed guardian while their child is in his care. This implies that the child is to obey and respect his/her teacher the same as he/she would his parents. This also implies respect to the other teachers of the school, as well as the child’s classroom teacher. In the absence of respect or obedience, remember that Law and Gospel both have their place in disciplining. Discipline in the school is done out of concern for the spiritual well-being of the child and love for their soul. Any feelings of injustice are to be discussed privately by the pupil or parents with the teacher involved. DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES:

1. Remove child from situation, speak with him/her, and receive apology. 2. Remove child from situation and all other children for a given amount of time. 3. Take away recess time or some other activity important to the child. 4. Call parents and have child removed from school for that day and meet with parents about problems. 5. If the above actions do not work, the child will be removed from school.

HOURS OF OPERATION Our preschool program is in session from 8:30am until 11:30am on Monday through Friday. Preschool options include two to five-day morning options, with an additional lunch bunch from 11:30am-12:30pm for an additional cost. A transitional Kindergarten Prep class may be available on an as needed basis, three afternoon a week form 12:30 – 3:30pm. If school needs to be closed due to inclement weather or for some other reason, Zion employs the services of One Call Now, you will be notified by text, email, or listed on the Zion website at its earliest convenience. Preschool students must be accompanied to and from the classroom by an adult. The adult must sign in and sign out each school day. Students should arrive not more than 30 minutes early for preschool since teachers are busy with preparation before each session. Students should be picked up promptly when classes are dismissed. When an emergency prevents you from picking your child up on time, please notify the school immediately so we may assure your child that he has not been forgotten. AUTHORIZATION TO PICK UP CHILD We must have written authorization from the parent for any person other than the parent to pick up the child. This includes carpooling. POLICIES

1. CLOTHING AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS Please dress your child in comfortable play clothes and sturdy shoes for preschool. Many activities are messy, so clothing should be durable and washable! The preschool day usually includes outdoor time. Please dress children warmly and include hats, mittens and boots when appropriate. Label your child's outerwear to avoid confusion! Send the children in clothes they can manage themselves. Children should not bring items such as purses, money, candy and toys to preschool so they won't be misplaced or forgotten. This does not include show and tell items.

2. SNACK TIME The purpose of snack time is for nutrition, enjoyment of eating, extension of sensory experience, time for learning concepts such as sharing, color, size, counting, shapes, textures, sweet/sour -- to broaden the child's grasp of the concept of God's gift of food. Parents are assigned to bring snacks several times during the school year. We also celebrate birthdays during the snack period. Parents may bring a birthday snack and napkins for their child's birthday.

3. FIELD TRIPS There are some walks and field trips scheduled during the year. A blanket consent form is included among the medical forms required for admission.

5. HEALTH Your child's health is a matter of major importance to all of us. If your child has allergies or health problems, please make the staff aware of them and special arrangements will be made if necessary. You may be called to pick up your child if he appears to have symptoms of illness during the class period. In such cases, the parent is contacted. In case the parent cannot be located, we will call the number of a friend or neighbor listed on the child's application or emergency card. Paramedics will be called in case of emergency. We cannot give any medications. When children are ill, please keep them at home; the preschool does not have facilities available for the care and comfort of sick students.

6. WEEKLY NEWSLETTER To keep you better informed concerning the activities and functions of our school, a school note (Panther Express) will be updated on Tuesdays of the week and posted on the website.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 11

7. PREPARING YOUR CHILD The first days of school can be very happy or unhappy experiences for your child. By your words and actions on the first day and thereafter you can help him. We suggest you place your child in the hands of the teacher, assure him that you will return to get him, and then leave promptly. When the child realizes you are not available, he will accept the teacher's guidance more readily. You may also help to prepare him by doing the following:

1. Speak of his going to school as a pleasant joyful event. 2. Take time to talk over with him the new experiences he will have so that he will look forward with pleasure to his first years in school. 3. Prepare him for the fact you will leave him alone in school to enjoy the company of other children. 4. Get to know the teacher, yourself. Your child will be happy and secure if he knows that his teacher and parents are friends.

CLOSING Our prayer is that during this year, with parents and teachers working together, your child will grow spiritually, socially, physically, and academically within our Christ-centered atmosphere.

K-8 SCHOOL POLICIES ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY Participation in any co-curricular activity is a privilege. A student must demonstrate faithful use of his or her God-given talents in the classroom, attendance, and homework, and all other school requirements, in order to participate. Students must maintain good academic standing in order to participate in co-curricular activities at school. Students will not be allowed to participate in athletic activities if their current academic status consists of two or more D’s or one or more F’s. ATTENDANCE Children are required by state law to be regular in their school attendance. Absences create extra work for both the student and teacher, so it is beneficial to avoid them whenever possible. In the event a student is ill, a phone call to the school should be made before school begins as a courtesy to the teachers and to avoid concern regarding a child's whereabouts. A written excuse from a parent must be provided for an absence from school. This excuse can be in the form of a written note, an email, or text. Please bring your child to school on time. A tardy does not start the child’s day off on the right foot. Please make appointments with doctors, dentists, etc., outside of school time. However, when this is not possible, the teacher should be notified at least one day in advance. Also, please try to avoid vacations during the school year. This helps the child stay current with class work and assignments. It also aids the teachers in preparation, presentation of class materials, and the correcting of assignments. Absence from school does not excuse the child from his or her daily work. All assigned work will be made up in any case of absenteeism. It is the child’s or parent’s responsibility to get the makeup assignments. Make-up work may be picked up at school, or arrangements can be made to send it home with a brother or sister. Assignments are to be returned in a timely fashion. EXTENDED CHILDCARE Zion’s childcare program has been established to assist parents of students enrolled at the school. The day-to-day operation of the program is administered by the principal. School rules and procedures shall be followed; childcare is an extension of school. The principal is ultimately responsible for all discipline. The following procedures will be used to operate the childcare program:

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 12

o The cost is $6.00 per hour, per first child — $3.00 for each child in the family after that. (You will either be given a bill at the end of each month, or your TADS account will be billed.)

o The doors will be unlocked at 6:45am to start morning care if it is being used. Please do not leave your child outside alone before doors are opened.

o After school care will be provided from 3:45pm to 5:00pm if it is being used.

o Any children not picked up by 3:45pm will go to child care and will start to be charged.

o After 5:00pm the fee will be $15 starting after the first five minutes, regardless of the time of being tardy. Arrangements must be made prior to arranged pickup time for this clause to not go into effect. This must be paid when the parent picks up their child. While we understand an occasional emergency may cause a late arrival, providers also have family commitments. If you are going to be late, please call so that your childcare provider can alter her schedule.

o Childcare will NOT be available on half-days of school when an in-service is scheduled for the teachers (12:00pm-5pm). ✓ PLEASE NOTE: Doors will be opened at 8:00am and locked at 3:45pm when no childcare services are being

used. All children must be supervised at all times when childcare services are not being used or offered. The parent or guardian should be available during these times unless the doors have been opened.

✓ CONDUCT NOTE: Any child’s behavior under the supervision of the before/after school care program is subject to school discipline policy within the classroom guidelines and/or school guidelines, which includes the principal. Any child NOT under the supervision of the before/after school program may receive school discipline. (See discipline policy on next page.)

✓ Guidelines for personnel or people in charge are listed in the staff handbook

CHURCH ATTENDANCE God reminds us in his Word, “I rejoiced with those who said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:11. The very nature of our school would suggest that church attendance is a concern of both the home and school. The classroom teachers will encourage the children to worship regularly. This is as God would have us do as he reminds us in Hebrews 10:25, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the day approaching.” COMPUTER/INTERNET USE Technology is a gift God to use for the benefit of all. However, as is true with most gifts God has given, people can use them for God-pleasing or sinful purposes. Since this is true also of computers and the Internet, a policy has been developed for students regarding the use of computers and the Internet. It is our desire that our students' experiences in using the Internet are God-pleasing and safe, and that they promote educational excellence. Zion Lutheran School has taken precautions to restrict access to sites that are not in harmony with our goals. However, on a global network it is impossible to control all materials. It is imperative that parents and teachers teach their children about making God-pleasing decisions about the type of material accessed. The use of school computers and having access to the Internet through them is a privilege. Inappropriate use will result in the cancellation of those privileges. The faculty will deem what is inappropriate, and its decisions are final.

o A significant amount of time and money has been invested in the purchase and placement of hardware and software in our school. In order to keep the equipment in the best possible condition, areas are to be kept free of food and drink. Additionally, equipment should be left in the condition it was found. Questions, concerns, or problems with equipment should be directed to the classroom teacher.

o Any malicious attempt to harm or destroy hardware or software will result in the cancellation of all computer privileges. The person(s) causing the damage will replace broken or damaged items.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 13

o Permission to use the computer or Internet shall be obtained from the classroom teacher who is also the supervisor of use. The teachers may access student files at any time. Students may be asked to sign an expectation and acceptable use form prior to using the technology.

o Student use of the computers is strictly for educational purposes and research. It is not to be used to retrieve or send e-mail, instant message, or enter into chat-room discussions unless directed by the classroom teacher.

DISCIPLINE In the Fourth Commandment God commands children to love all of his representatives, including teachers. In the absence of respect or obedience, Law and Gospel both have their place in disciplining. Discipline in the school is done out of concern for the spiritual well-being of the child and love for his/her soul. Any feelings of injustice are to be discussed privately by the student or parents with the teacher involved.

Disciplining students may be done by the appropriate teacher in charge, the before/after school person in charge, and/or the principal. Unsupervised students are children that should be supervised by parents before or after school and are not under the supervision of a teacher, before/after school person, or the principal. These children may be subject to school discipline regardless of the behavior. However, before any discipline measures are taken, unsupervised children will follow these steps before school discipline may be taken:

1) The involved families and children must attempt to solve the issue between the children on their own first. (The parent is responsible for behavior under their supervision outside of school.) 2) Contact the principal if the situation has not resolved. 3) If the principal is contacted, the students may be subjected to school discipline.

Anti-Bullying As a Christ-centered school, Zion is committed to making our school a safe and caring environment for all students.

John 13:34 The Lord commands us “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” We will treat each other with respect and refuse to tolerate bullying of any kind.

Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Definition: Bullying is when someone habitually hurts, frightens, threatens, manipulates, controls another person, or

leaves someone out on purpose.

Bullying behaviors, which may be face-to-face or through electronic means (such as email, texts, or other media) include the following:

· Hurting others physically by hitting, kicking, tripping, biting, or pushing · Stealing or damaging another person’s things · Ganging up on someone · Teasing someone in a hurtful way · Using insults or making fun of others · Spreading rumors or lies about others · Sarcasm · Leaving individuals out on purpose, or trying to get other kids not to play with others

Students at Zion Lutheran School will do the following things to prevent bullying:

· Treat each other respectfully · Refuse to bully others · Refuse to let others be bullied · Refuse to watch, laugh, or join in when someone is being bullied · Try to include everyone in play, especially those who are often left out · Report bullying to an adult.

HOME VISITS Each summer, near the beginning of the school year, the teachers will contact parents of new students in their classroom to schedule a home visit. The visit allows the teacher to meet the new student and parents and also provides an opportunity to share some class policies and procedures that will make the first days of school go more smoothly. IMMUNIZATIONS The Colorado Department of Health requires schools to have on file an updated record of the enrolled students' immunizations. Students must be up to date, in the process of becoming up to date, or have a letter on file explaining why immunizations are not current. Students not in compliance with these immunization requirements are not to be allowed in school according to state law. The status of compliance, according to law, is reported two times in the school year. Keeping your child's immunizations updated not only protects him/her, but also other students and adults with whom he/she may come in contact. LATE WORK When school work is not handed in on time it becomes a problem for the student and for the teacher. We feel that it is a very important lesson for students to learn to accomplish tasks on time, so we have adopted the following late work policy:

o Students will be required to make up the late assignment the day it was due. It will be at the teacher’s discretion whether the student will need to make the assignment up during free time, recess, or after school. Students generally have one extra day before the grade will be made a permanent “F” in the grade book, unless other arrangements have been made.

o The assignment’s grade will drop one letter grade for being late (or late one day).

o If the teacher decides the student will need to stay after school to make up the assignment, the parents will be contacted during the school day.

o Teachers will record how many late assignments a student has in order to inform parents on the quarter report card.

LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS Other than for an emergency, students who need to leave the school grounds during any time of the school day must have the written permission of their parents. Whenever such permission is granted, full responsibility then rests with the student and the parents. MEDICATION Zion Lutheran School will follow the Denver Public School System medication policy. At no time may a student dispense his/her own medication. The teacher is to administer medication while the student is at school. Teachers will not be able to dispense medicine without a doctor’s written permission. A medication form may be obtained from the teachers or the school office. These forms will also be available at registration. This completed form may be faxed to Zion from the student's doctor. A teacher will need written permission from a parent to dispense nonprescription medication. This includes cough syrup and cough drops. PARENTAL QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS/RESOLVING CONFLICT Parents with questions and concerns about happenings in their child's classroom, on the playground, or in school in general should speak to their child's teacher first. In this way you will alert the teacher to a problem of which they may not be aware or you can receive clarification from the teacher. If, after speaking to your child's teacher, you would like to also speak to the principal along with the teacher, please feel free to do so. If you feel the need to discuss the matter further, the pastor and/or Board of Education chairman can be brought in as well. Finally, Zion's Board of Education is the policy-making body for the school. Matters not resolved by the above procedures will be referred to it for a final decision.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 16

Generally speaking, discussion of your concerns or questions without including the teacher is not going to be productive. Also, we want to avoid the temptation to gossip, and rather be encouraged, as Ephesians 4 reminds us, to speak the truth in love directly to those involved in a matter. PROHIBITED/UNNECESSARY ITEMS Students may not bring knives, guns, or any other dangerous weapons to school. Drugs and alcohol are also prohibited. Electronic devices such as CD players, iPods, handheld video games, and cellular phones may not be used on school grounds unless permission has been given by a teacher. These and any other items brought from home that prove to be a distraction to students will be confiscated by the classroom teacher. The school reserves the right, when there is reasonable suspicion, to search students’ desks and personal property. Students will receive a conduct-referral form for bringing any dangerous items to school, which includes a possible suspension from school. Cellular phones may be used after school ONLY! They should not be used at ANY time during the school day. Teachers may hold cellular phones until the end of the school day. If it becomes a habit, the principal is given the authority to ask families not to send their child to school with a phone. SCHOOL CLOSING/DELAYED START Zion Lutheran School contracts the services of One Call Now. This is an automated service that will notify you by phone call, text, or email in the event of school closure.

**Please note: Parents, please make sure all of your current information, especially phone numbers and email, are up-to-date with the office manager or the principal.

However, the safety and protection of our parents and students is a great concern of ours, so please take your time on mornings such as these if you feel that is necessary. No tardies will be given on snowy or icy days.

On mornings where the roads may be treacherous to drive on (or an emergency event happens), a late start may be necessary.

• There will NOT be any before-school care SCHOOL PROPERTY All students are expected to take good care of all church and school property. This includes buildings, grounds, furnishings, books, equipment, etc. In cases of neglect, damage, or destruction, the cost of restitution will be the responsibility of the student and his/her parents. Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 17

Exceptions to the opening of the school doors at 8:00am would be dependent upon the weather or other circumstances. On half days of school, classes will be dismissed at noon unless otherwise published. Children who arrive at school before 8:00am are expected to go to childcare. This must be communicated before each family’s time of arrival. This includes at least two days notice or direct communication with a staff member. Preschool students must be accompanied by an adult to and from the classroom. The adult must sign in and sign out each school day. We must have written permission from a parent for any person other than the parent to pick up a child. This includes carpooling. It is best for the children to arrive at school no later than 8:10am so they may hang up their jackets, get unpacked, and be at their desk when classes begin. All children are to be picked up promptly after 3:30pm. If that is occasionally impossible, please make sure your child’s teacher knows that situation. SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION Since it is a privilege for children to attend Zion Lutheran School, we expect full cooperation from students and parents regarding all rules and regulations. We operate on the premise that the school has the authority to reprimand, suspend, or expel a student when rules are not obeyed. The Board of Education has delegated to the Principal authority to suspend a student for any period not to exceed five school days on grounds authorized by this policy. In exercising this authority, the Principal must follow the procedures prescribed in this policy to afford due process of law to students, parents, and school personnel. The Board of Education has delegated to the Principal the authority to expel any student who does not qualify for continued attendance at Zion Lutheran School. The expulsion will be at least a quarter in length, but each case will be judged individually. The Principal shall report each expulsion to the Board of Education, describing the circumstances and the reasons for his action. Those who wish to do so may appeal the Principal’s decision to the Board of Education. Procedures for expulsion of a student shall be initiated by the Principal's recommendation to the Board of Education. The Principal shall, at the time of making such a recommendation, give written notice of the recommendation to the student and the student's parent or guardian. Such notice may be sent by United States certified mail (in which case it shall be complete upon being deposited in the mail) or by personal delivery. Notice shall be given at least five school days prior to the recommended date of action. The notice shall contain a statement of reasons for the recommended action: a statement that the student or his parent or guardian is entitled to a hearing before the Board of Education; a statement that a mutually agreeable time, date, and place will be established for the hearing, if one is requested; a statement that the student may be present at the hearing and hear the evidence against him, that he may question witnesses, that he may present evidence in his own behalf, and that he may be accompanied by his parent or guardian; and a statement that his failure to participate in the hearing will constitute a waiver of further rights in the matter. TELEPHONE CALLS The faculty meets in the mornings from 7:30-7:45am for devotion and prayer; if it is possible, please avoid calling at that time. Telephone calls to school should be kept to a minimum during school hours. Only with special permission from one of the teachers may any child make a telephone call. Emergency calls are always in order and are generally made by the teacher rather than the student. Parents may also contact the principal via his cell phone for emergencies or special needs. TEXTBOOKS Families are responsible for purchasing copies of the religious books and materials used in our Word of God curriculum (Bible, hymnal, grades 7 and 8 Catechism). These books may be purchased on registration day. We hope these materials become treasured resources in years to come. If students damage or lose their copies of their religious books, they are responsible for purchasing replacements.

Our school owns all other textbooks and lends them to the students to use during the course of the year. Student hard-cover textbooks are to be covered within the first few days of the school year. Students should take good care of the books. The student and his/her parents will need to pay for any textbooks that are lost or damaged.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 18

VISITORS Visitation to Zion is generally reserved to parents and adult relatives of students at any time. Prospective students and/or their parents may come for a one-day visit after a request is obtained at least the day before the visit. This allows the teacher ample time to prepare for a visitor. No students should open or prop doors for any adult or child at any time during the day. Only church and school representatives have the responsibility to let in people into the building during the school day. The church doors on the north side of the building will be the only entrance available during the day. It is rare to expect a teacher to open the doors before school ends at 3:30. Teachers will not be expected to open doors because they are in direct supervision of their students.

SCHOOL LIFE CHAPEL SERVICES On Fridays the students and teachers of our school gather together in the church sanctuary for worship. The service begins at 8:30am and lasts about a half hour. Pastors and principal of Zion will take turns leading chapel as well as other pastors from our local WELS congregations and teachers from Rocky Mountain Lutheran High School. Parents are welcome to attend. CURRICULUM The curriculum includes all the experiences of the child for which our school accepts responsibility. The curriculum provide for the spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical needs of every student. The curriculum meets the requirements for an approved school in the state of Colorado. With the interests of our students in mind, the curriculum is evaluated yearly by the faculty with the purpose of providing the best instruction possible. Word of God is the most important subject in our school curriculum. It is not only taught as a separate subject, but is also incorporated, when appropriate, in all subjects of the curriculum. It is our intent that students learn to connect and apply God’s Word to every aspect of their lives. The curriculum consists of the following subject areas:

o Word of God - Worship, Old Testament History, New Testament History, Catechism, Memory Work, and Practical Applications

o Language Arts - Phonics, Reading, Writing, Spelling, English Grammar, Literature, and Penmanship

o Science - General Science, Life Science, Earth Science, Health, and Space Science

o Social Studies - Cultural Studies, Geography, American History, World History, Current Events, Government, and Colorado History

o Mathematics - General Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra

o Physical Education - Lifetime Fitness and Health

o Computer - Typing, Applications, and Internet Use

o Music - Music Appreciation, Theory, and Performance

o Art - Crayon Drawing, Tempera Paint, Torn Paper, Cut Paper, Charcoal, Color Pencil, Mosaic, Collage, Chalk, Markers, Pen and Ink, and Water Color

FIELD TRIPS Field trips will be planned occasionally during the school year to extend students’ learning experiences. Field trips enable students to grow culturally, expand their awareness of their home state, motivate them to engage in further study, and offer a pleasant break from the normal classroom routine. Attendance on field trips is a privilege based on good academic standing and proper classroom conduct. Parents must sign a consent form (a blanket form may be signed at registration) and pay any associated cost for their child(ren) to participate in a field trip. Clothing that students wear on

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 19

field trips should be chosen carefully. Please remember that our students are not only representing our school, but our Savior as well. Parents may be called upon to volunteer to serve as drivers and chaperones for field trips. GRADE SCALE Our percentage grades correspond with these letter grades:

PERCENT GRADE 100 A+ 99-96 A (Excellent) 95-94 A- 93-92 B+ 91-88 B (Good) 87-86 B- 85-84 C+ 83-80 C (Average) 79-78 C- 77-76 D+ 75-72 D (Below Average) 71-70 D- Below 70 F (Failure)

In addition, the following scale may be used for some subject areas: E - Excellent S - Satisfactory N - Needs Improvement U - Unsatisfactory I – Incomplete

HOMEWORK Students should be able to complete most of their schoolwork during the time they are at school. However, this may not always be the case, especially in the upper grades. If your child does not have a suitable place to do the work he or she brings home from school, please provide one. Homework should be done in a place where the student is not distracted by other family members, television, radio, video games, and so forth. If questions arise during the year concerning the amount of homework, please discuss it with your child's teacher. LUNCH Every student is to bring his or her own lunch. Hot lunch will be served on Wednesdays by parent volunteers. HOT LUNCH PROGRAM Zion is happy to announce that we will continue to offer hot lunch on Wednesdays during the 2018-2019 school year for students in grades K-8. To do so, we will be implementing some changes to our hot lunch policies and procedures in order to ensure we can sustain the costs of preparing nutritious meals to the students and staff at Zion. What is the cost of a hot lunch? This year, Zion will be charging a hot lunch fee, rather than asking for a donation. If your child would like to eat hot lunch, he/she will be required to pay a $2.50 hot lunch fee. This fee includes one serving of a meat, grain or bread, fruit or vegetable, and dessert. Additional items may be purchased at $0.50 per item and will be billed accordingly. How do I order hot lunch for my child? Hot lunch order forms are available online or by using a paper order form. Paper forms can be found in the stairwell leading up to the second floor of the school. What is the deadline for placing an order? Hot lunch order forms are due the Friday before hot lunch is served.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 20

How do I pay for hot lunch? All hot lunch fees must be paid for in advance and are due the Friday before hot lunch is served. Payments can be dropped in the hot lunch drop box located in the stairwell leading up to the second floor of the school. *Be sure your payment includes your child’s first name, last name and hot lunch date. Can I pay for more than one hot lunch at a time? Yes, you can prepay for as many hot lunches as you would like. Prepaid hot lunches will be indicated on individual student punch cards. How are hot lunch payments tracked? Students will receive a hot lunch punch card that will reflect that week’s and/or additional week(s) prepayment. Punch cards will be kept at school and distributed to students on Wednesdays prior to eating hot lunch. Students will submit punch cards as payment to whomever is preparing hot lunch that week. Will I receive a hot lunch invoice for the additional items my child purchases? Yes, parents will receive an email indicating how many additional items their child purchased, along with the total amount due. This amount must be included the following week’s payment. If your child is not ordering hot lunch the following week, payments for additional items are due the Friday before hot lunch is served. All payments can be dropped in the hot lunch drop box. Be sure to include your child’s first name, last name, and the date in which your child purchased additional items. Where can I access the hot lunch menu? Zion’s hot lunch menu can be viewed online or by checking the paper calendar hanging in the stairwell leading up to the second floor of the school. What if I forget to preorder hot lunch for my child? Students will still have the opportunity to eat hot lunch. Parents will receive an email invoice indicating the total amount due. Payment is due upon receipt. All payments can be dropped in the hot lunch drop box. Be sure to include your child’s first name, last name, and the date in which your child ate hot lunch. What if I have questions about hot lunch? All questions, concerns, and account balance inquiries can be emailed to [email protected]. MISSION OFFERINGS As Christians, we have God's command to spread the good news of Jesus' saving work to all nations. Therefore, our students not only have the opportunity to learn about the work of Christ's Church in mission fields, but they also have the privilege of spreading the gospel through their mission offerings which support this wonderful work. Once each week as part of our Friday chapel service students have an opportunity to donate to missions here in the United States and in other parts of the world. PARENT PARTICIPATION You are your child's most important teacher, and we need your help. All parents are encouraged to participate in the classroom several times during the school year. Parents are also required to sign up for school cleaning. Let us know if you wish to assist more often. In addition, other opportunities are provided for parent participation throughout the year. Watch the Newsletter for the week (usually Monday) for details. Teachers - Please read through this!!! PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled after the end of the second quarter. Parent contact weeks are provided for the third and fourth quarters. The conferences at the end of the second quarter are mandatory. The parent contact weeks at the end of the third and fourth quarters are optional, but parents are encouraged to meet with their child’s teacher. It is important for the child's parents and teacher to have the opportunity to discuss, face to face, the progress of the child spiritually, academically, emotionally, and physically. It also affords a wonderful opportunity to set improvement goals for the child.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 21

Parents should feel free to bring any concerns to the teacher and are free to schedule a special conference at any time during the school year. Teachers may also schedule special conferences with parents throughout the school year as needed. Student-led conferences are also an option for teachers and parents to use during this time. PARTICIPATION IN WORSHIP All classes will be scheduled to sing for Zion's church services at various times throughout the school year. All children scheduled to sing are expected to be present as this is part of our music curriculum. Written or oral excuses are to be provided by parents of those unable to attend. Each year, the children prepare a special Christmas service(s) to worship the Babe of Bethlehem, Jesus Christ, during the Christmas season. There will be two different children's services, each being more appropriate for the age of the children in it. For these services children are to be dressed so as to honor the Savior-King. (See the dress code.) PANTHER EXPRESS Communication between school and home is critical in the operation of a school. To keep parents and students informed concerning activities and events, the Panther Express newsletter will be emailed home on Tuesdays of each week. This note is also available on the school page of the website (www.zion-wels.org). PLAY NIGHTS Preschool through eighth grade will participate in a school play. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about performing arts. REPORT CARDS The teachers at Zion use a computer grade book called Learn Boost to enter their classroom grades. Each week grades will be uploaded to the Internet. Parents will receive a unique username and password to access those grades. It is a wonderful resource for parents to use to monitor progress and to ensure their children are remaining faithful in their school work. SCHOOL PICTURES Individual student pictures will be taken by a professional photographer near the beginning of the school year. Parents may purchase any of a variety of picture packages, if they choose. If parents would prefer to not purchase pictures, students will still get their picture taken for school use (records, yearbook, etc.). This will be of no cost to the parents of the student. The date of picture day will be posted on the school calendar. Students need to bring or wear appropriate clothing for their pictures. SCHOOL SUPPLIES The children of our school are asked to bring some needed supplies to school. A list for each classroom is sent home in our summer letter and is available at other times upon request. It is very important that students have these supplies and that they stay at school. SCHOOL SUPPORT COMMITTEE (SSC) The School Support Committee is a parent organization formed to assist the school and teachers with yearly activities, parties, and fund-raisers. The committee is also another option for parents to pass along concerns and ideas for improvements to the teachers and the principal. It is made up of parent volunteers, faculty representative, and is chaired by the Board of Education Chairman. The principal of the school is an advisory member. The committee meets regularly to plan events and discuss ways to improve the school. MAPS Testing Students in grades 2-8 participate in MAPS testing program each fall. These tests gauge student progress, aid in curriculum planning, and provide information needed to ensure our school is promoting and achieving academic

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 22

excellence. The testing lasts most of four or five school days. Results of the testing will be sent home for parents to review several weeks after the testing date.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES JUNIOR CHOIR AND MELODY CHIME CHOIR The purpose of choir is to praise our Lord with music. Members of these groups will be given extra opportunities to sing or ring in regular church services and on special occasions throughout the school year. The choirs are made up of students in the upper grades that volunteer for this extracurricular activity. Rehearsal times are during study hall at the end of the school day once a week. COLORADO LUTHERAN ACTIVITIES LEAGUE Our school belongs to the Colorado Lutheran Activities League (CLAL). We participate with other WELS schools from along the Front Range in several activities during the school year. Soccer, basketball, and track seasons are held each year. In March, a Fine Arts Day is held at Rocky Mountain Lutheran High School. The events held at this Fine Arts Day are forensics, spelling bee, art fair, science/history fair, and math competition. To participate in these activities, students need to maintain an acceptable grade average, turn in assignments on time, and maintain a behavior level that would represent our Savior and our school well. SPORTS OBJECTIVES The sports program at Zion Lutheran School works toward:

o Providing all interested children with an opportunity to use their God-given physical talents to glorify God.

o Developing an attitude of Christian sportsmanship.

o Giving direction to our children in competitive team sports.

o Developing these children's talents in a way whereby they might more fully appreciate our Lord and what he has given them.

o Encouraging children to participate in our organized sports program so they might not only develop their talents but also develop school pride and team spirit.

o Developing social skills needed to live competently and cooperatively.

o Providing an opportunity for children to have fun in sports while competing with teams of their own age.

CONCLUSION CLOSING STATEMENT It is our goal to assist you with the spiritual training and education of your child. First, we want to proclaim to your child the truth of a Savior from sin in the person of Jesus. When your child learns grows in faith, he/she will be ready to live in love for him and walk according to his commandments. It is our intent to help you instill in your children the desire to want to serve their Lord and Savior. The amount of time your child is at our school is only a small portion of his/her total life, yet those hours are very important. We will do our utmost to see that the authority and responsibility you have delegated to us is used to the best of our ability. By making God's Word our daily guide, we as parents and teachers, together with our children, praise and glorify our God now and in eternity.

If you have an idea about how the school or school procedures might be improved, please bring that to the principal or the Board of Education. The faculty, board, and church council do not have a monopoly on ideas. We appreciate your suggestions.

It is our prayer that God will continue to shower his bountiful blessings upon our school and the work it does. May the Christian education which our children receive in their homes, church, and school, prove to be a lasting blessing to them

Zion Evangelical Lutheran School Handbook- 23
