welcome to our last edition of Zanshin for 20�4. As we close 2014 and embark on a new journey in 2015, on behalf of the management of the TKA, I wish to sincerely thank everyone who contributed their time, talent and finances to ensure that the TKA had a successful year. We successfully hosted the 11th

IKD/CKC Caribbean Championships in August and apart from doing very well in this event, we also gained many medals in TTKU hosted or recognized tournaments. As is also customary, some of our members got the opportunity to represent Trinidad and Tobago at an international level.

2015 will be an important year for us as we intensify training for the 2nd IKD World tournament in July, at the Ryerson University, Toronto Canada. All members are encouraged to come out in their numbers to train for this prestigious event where TKA members will compete against some of the best in the world.

In 2015, let us not just recite the Dojo Kun but live it as we Seek Perfection of Character, are Faithful to our friends, family and loved ones, Endeavour to achieve our goals, Refrain from Violent Behaviour and Respect Others.

On October 24th the TTKU held its 2nd Biennual Awards function for the period 2013 to 2014.

Michelle Lue Fatt and Roshelle Lue Fatt won 1st place in 6 to 7 age group (girls);

Dominic Lue Fatt received gold in the 8 to 9 age group (boys);

Jesse Gonsales won 3rd place in Boys 16 to 17 years;

Deane Avril received gold in Men’s Over 18.

Congratulations.

Senseis Theo Faustin and Nigel Forde also received their certificates as TTKU Coaches. They were in the first batch of TTKU coaches to be certified in Trinidad and Tobago

Sensie Clarke was appointed President of the International Karate Daigaku In June 2011. His extensive travel schedule allowed him to promote IKD karate to many countries around the world.

curacao open TournamenT

Members of the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Union National Team competed in the Curacao Open International Tournament which took place on the 17th and 18th October 2014. TKA’s Tamara Joseph did us proud by winning a bronze medal in Kata.

OSKK National Tournament was also held on 6th July, 2014 at Maloney Sporting Complex. As usual TKA did very well. Competitors such as Michael Thomas, Michelle and Roshelle Lue Fatt, Anthony Thomas, Dominic Lue Fatt, Nicole Lambie and Tamara Joseph all won medals. Congratulations.

Meet OuR seNIOR INstRuctORs

The TKA’s newest club the ‘Tobago Shotokan Spirit Warriors’ was founded on January 2, 2014 by Sensei Leo Grant Jr. and his wife Fiona Grant Jr. Since its inception the club has been very active. In April the club hosted its first event called ‘Fitness Blast,’ which was a mixture of physical challenges such as the person who could do the most pushups and a kata competition. Sensei Dean Avril of the UWI Shotokan Karate Club was present as a guest judge.

The club also held its first grading in April. Eighteen (18) students qualified to be graded. Senseis Dexter Shim and Earl Wilson conducted the examinations. All students were successful and the club received favourable comments on its performance to the delight of their Sensei.

On June 29th, 2014 the club participated in the TAK Demo Classic tournament. This was the club’s first tournament, and it sent up nine (9) competitors with excellent results. The second grading was held on the 26th July, 2014 and all sixteen (16) students. Were successful with two (2) brown belts moving up to 1st Kyu.
