SOMERSET HILLS YMCA2012 ANNUAL REPORT

A LETTER FROM THE BOARDDear Members,

A community without a Y seems inconceivable. In each community, the Y is a cornerstonethat supports personal and social change by investing in children, in health and in neighbors. At the Somerset Hills YMCA, our promise is to strengthen the foundation of community. This journey is sustained by the commitment, faith and dedication of individuals who trulybelieve in the important role of the Y in the community. The events of this past year demonstrated the strength of community and the power ofconnections. Every day at the Y, we focus on changing lives in meaningful and fulfilling ways. Through collaboration, we believe there are endless opportunities to connect and enrich lives whileaddressing critical societal needs. Our focus coupled with our strategic roadmap will deliveron this mission by optimizing and expanding the programs and services that we offer. In 2012, we have seen positive and tangible results of the difference we are making in the areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Through the Y’s Giving Garden we touched many lives. Completed in July, the garden was designed in such a way as to facilitate the participation of individuals of all ages and abilities. The benefits were numerous. During the summer, 900 children learned about health and nutrition by tending to the garden. Seniors realized the benefits of horticultural therapy and adults with special needs learned pre-employment skills through various gardening activities. All of the harvested vegetables were distributed weekly to four of the Y’s financial assistance families who, otherwise, would not have had fresh produce. The garden exemplifies the inter-relationship of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Our commitment to support the special needs community propelled our success in securing grants that enabled us to accommodate 105 children with special needs in the Carousel Kids summer program and in day camp. Throughout the summer, the children enjoyed enriching activities with the goal of fostering learning, self-esteem and joy.

This year, Career Forum celebrated its 20th consecutive year at the Y. Difficult economic times were the catalyst for the group’s inception and, over the past 20 years, the program has helped thousands of participants through periods of unemployment and job transition. In fact, 44 participants landed jobs in 2012 – a record number in the history of the program.

Launched in 2010, our Endowment Campaign has yielded 50 supporters with $3.1 million inpledges and donations. The success of the campaign helps to ensure that the Y’s impact onthe Somerset Hills community will be significant and enduring.

None of this was accomplished alone. There is strength that results from collaboration. It is thanks to the passion, talent and commitment of donors, volunteers, partners and sponsors that we are able to support increasing community needs. In fact, this year, the Y was able to provide over $578,000 in direct financial assistance to qualifying individuals and families, as well as over $300,000 in support programs and services that benefit the community.

We firmly believe it is our responsibility to be good stewards of the resources that are entrusted to us and to work tirelessly for the good of our common future.

Our community is our inspiration.

Sincerely,

Tad Waldbauer David M. CarcieriChairman of the Board President & CEO
