DEAR CADILLAC COMMUNITYOur local YMCA continues to make a huge difference in the lives of those living inthe greater Cadillac Community. One such life is that of Seth Houk, a 2012 Cadillac Highstudent who has found great friendships and wellbeing at the YMCA. Seth has been givingback by being a camp counselor for the last two years at Camp Torenta. Camp Torenta is a

great summer programthat many children attend each year. Many of the adults in ourcommunity have fond memories of their time at Camp Torenta, and this tradition continuesto grow for all children in our area with your generous donations.

Our YMCA provides many services for our community with over $49,000 in fnancialassistance to 840 different peoplewho were able to participate in the Y and its programsfor 2013 through the generosity of our donors. Donors also provided over 1,000 CWTAridesfor youth from Cadillac Area Schools allowing them to participate in after-schoolprogramming.

Our board is proud of the many collaborations that are a part of the YMCA culture. TheYMCA has teamed up with all four Cadillac Area Elementary schools and Pine River

Elementary to provide an afterschool tutoring programthat includes vigorous play, healthy snack, and nutrition education. They started a community gardenduring thesummer of 2013 in partnership with the Cadillac Health Coalition and the District HealthDepartment. They work with local agencies like the United Way, DHS and the FamilyDivision of the 28th Circuit court system to provide a life skills programto area teens. When three head start programs were lost in our area in 2013, the YMCA stepped up andadded 18 of these students to its preschoolpopulation. These are just a few of the manyways that our YMCA has worked to better the lives of people within our community.

Additionally, the YMCA makes changing to a healthy lifestylea positive event to many inour area. Like other communities, ours has a combined overweight and obesity rate totalingover 77% of the population. During any visit, you can see all shapes and sizes walking,

using a cardio machine or attending a class to try and combat this national problem. Theydo so with encouragementfrom instructors, personal trainers and fellow members. TheYMCA is a great community resource and we invite anyone who has not visited it to checkout the incredible and life changing programmingthat occurs within and outside of itswalls.

    Sincerely,

    Kelly Smith, YMCA Board Chair

    CAMP TORENTASTATS 2013

As parents, we always want to know that our children arein good hands when they are not with us.Camp Torenta givesparents the condence to know that this is true for their childrenwhen they are attending camp. The minute you drive your childreninto Camp Torenta, you know it is a special place. The counselorsimmediately make you feel like your children will bein good hands.

We have two boys, Brendan & Keegan, that we have been veryfortunate to be able to send them to camp with the help of the YMCAscholarship program. They have been attending camp Torenta since2007. Each year, they cannot wait for the yer to come out so we

can get them signed up for another week or two of camp Torenta.Camp Torenta is a great experience & a life time of wonderfulmemories for Brendan & Keegan.

    Camp Torenta Parents

Camp Torenta is a great camp that kids look forward toattending every summer. And every year the YMCA workswith the Wexford-Missaukee Department of Human Services(DHS) to help DHS sponsored children and youth experiencethe activities and learning opportunities at Camp Torenta. Itis that collaboration between the YMCA and DHS that allowschildren and youth who could not afford to go to camp to beable to attend! The Y is a true community partner in helpingeveryone grow from the life experiences that come fromsummer camp.

Having owned property in theLake City/Moorestown area forover 30 years, my husband andI were able to make the breakfrom the Detroit area and moveup North. The frst winter wasa tough one on me. My children, grandchildren, sister, brother and

life-long friends were over 200miles away; though a phone callkept me connected, I missedthem all terribly. Was I reallygoing to be able to make thetransition, or would I just be avery lonely soul?

I had read that the YMCAwould be coming to the areaand was very excited tobecome a member. I hadbeen attending water aerobicclasses in my hometown andhad made friends through thatassociation.

I joined my frst wateraerobic class and was thrilledto be in the pooland to meetother ladies from the area. Astime went by, there was a core

group of women that cameto class and forged a closebond and friendship. Wealso enjoyed our instructor andher friendship. We enjoyedthe exercise (and each other)so much that we started tocome on days when there was

no class. We now know eachothers families and share ourfeelings: our joys, our sorrowsand our heartbreaks. Weshare pictures of children andgrandchildren, of siblings andspouses. We have dubbedourselves The Swim Chicks.

It was the Y that unitedus. It has changed myoutlook on being here. While I still make long distancephone calls and take tripsdownstate to visit my lovedones, I now look forwardto getting up each day andjoining my friends in the pool. And that has made all thedifference!

Cadillac Area Public Schools (CAPS) andthe Cadillac Area YMCA are excited about

their continued partnership in afterschoolprogramming. Specically, the elementaryafterschool tutoring and recreation programtargets students who may be strugglingacademically.

Students are referred to the program bytheir teachers. They enroll in the programfor six week sessions that meet ve days aweek. Each day YMCA staff, in partnershipwith Chartwells, provides a snackimmediately after school. Then, Y stafflead students in vigorous physical activityand nutrition education lessons. Once the

snack and play are taken care of, studentsare ready to learn again. CAPS teachers

organize tutoring lessons for Y staff towork with students in small groups. YMCAProgram Director Mike Kelso said includingthe elements of play, nutrition, and tutoringis important. When students are comingoff a full day of school it really makessense to provide a snack and physicalactivity. Its something we think isessential for students to be successfulin their tutoring session. It really helpsreset their minds and bodie, preparingthem for more academic work.

This program initially started in the 2012-

2013 academic year at Lincoln Elementary. When the program saw great success and

student achievement, it was expanded toall four CAPS elementary schools for the2013-2014 academic year. The programis provided free of charge to students.Much of our funding was for startingthe program. We have some fundsavailable to continue but now we arereally concentrating on making theprogram nancially sustainable.

Other funding partners in the programthat have helped make it a success includeWalmart, the United Way and CadillacRotary.

YMCADAYCARE PROGRAMOur family moved to Cadillac this past summer and among many other things,

we began searching for someone to help care for our children. After looking forseveral months, we received the fall program book from the YMCA offering thenew daycare program. While my husband and I were excited about the childcareoption, we were nervous because our childcare had always been in-home. Imet with Debbie, the Daycare Director, to learn more about the new daycareprogram and discussed my nervousness. Debbie was very understandingand reassuring. She understood my reservations but was condent I would bepleased with the program. Debbie was absolutely correct!

Enrolling my boys in the YMCA daycare program has been a blessing to ourfamily. The daycare providers are wonderful! They provide loving, consistent

and encouraging carefor my boys in my absence. My boys look forward togoing to school every day. They play games, do arts and crafts and socializewith other children. We are so grateful for the YMCA daycare program and wouldrecommend the program to anyonelooking for quality childcare.

    TEEN IMPACT

PROGRAMWe think that the program was great

for our son. He gained self condence,he better understands that choicesmade today impact the rest of his life, and he found it to be a life changingexperience. He gained building blocks forlife. Some of the things discussed in thegroup caused him to think and talk aboutthings that maybe he had not given much

thought to before. His sister has pointedout that he thinks of others more oftennow. Not only do we highly recommendthe Teen Impact Program, but our sondoes as well.

I am sharing my story with you todaytothank you for changing my life. Iwant you to understand the differenceyouve made for me with your pastgifts to the YMCA. I really want you toknow that I am just one example of the

impact youve had on the youth andyoung adults in our area.

From the very beginning of the YMCAmission here in the Cadillac area, ithas been a huge part of my life andgrowing up. As a kid, I was a partof Y when it was a hang out place atthe old senior center across from thehigh school football stadium. The Yintroduced me to many new friends

and opportunities. It was such a nicechange of pace for long summers whenI otherwise would have had nothing todo. It taught me a lot about meetingnew friends and how to get out of mycomfort zone. It helped me grow into awell-rounded kid.

The YMCA also introduced me toa whole new world of fun whenthey partnered with CAPS to runCamp Torenta.I went to camp formany years, often multiple weeks asummer. I learned cool new songs, artsand crafts, sports, games, and madelife-long friends. All of these campexperiences taught me a lot about theYMCA four core values of respect,

responsibility, caring, and honesty.Values I still live by every day.

I carried all of these experiences andthese values into my adulthood whenIdecided to give backas a campcounselor. I cannot even begin to

explain how much two summers workingat camp changed my life for the better.I walked away both summers with closefriends that will forever be a part of mylife. I met wonderful, fun, and amazingkids that all taught me so much. Today,I see those kids everywhere aroundCadillac and every time they recognizeme. Those reunions are so gratifyingbecause I am reminded that I positively

impacted a childs life! When the new YMCA building opened

up, it was another big impact on my life!It gave my friends and me something todo and kept us out of trouble on snowdays, summer days, and wheneverwe got bored. It was always a nice, healthy alternative to anything elsewe could have been doing! Since highschool, I have been using the YMCAWellness Center as a place to expandfriendships and grow physically, spiritually and mentally. I havemet many new friends though the Ysftness programs, pick-up games, andvolunteering events. Being around thiscommunity as an adult has taught me

a lot about staying committed, living ahealthy lifestyle in all aspects, and abouthow important it is to live selessly.

Because of what animpacttheCadillac YMCA has had on my life, Iwould like to thank everyonelike you

who has been a part of building the Yinto what it is today. Thank you for allthe hard work you have put in. I canpersonally say that your efforts andyour support have been noticedand have made a huge impact on manylives.

Last year your gift to the YMCAsAnnual Campaign supported thedevelopment of youth programs and the

participation of youth and families in theYMCA. I hope my story helps you knowhow benefcial your support has beenover the years. I also hope it inspiresyou to pledge to this years campaign. Iknow we both would like other membersin our community to feel the impactofthe YMCA on their lives just as I have. Please take a moment to consider sucha gift.

    Thank You Again,Seth Houk
