YMCA Ontario Early Years

Our VolunteersThank you to our dedicated volunteers. From youth to seniors, from fitness to maintenance, ourvolunteers took many moments out of their busy lives this year to help our YMCA make the lives ofso many in our community healthier, stronger, and better.

Our Management Team

Membership, Child Care, YMCAOntario Early Years and day campshave seen increased participation in

programs coupled with significantly increasedsatisfaction. The results of the most recentnational YMCA SAM (Serving All Members)survey indicated that we are one of the mostconnected, responsive and well used YMCAs inthe country. 77% believe our YMCA is helpingtheir personal development, 88% believe ourYMCA is a good place for children andfamilies. One of the most remarkable pieces offeedback we received was that over 90% of ourcommunity members who responded to thesurvey indicated that they believe wecontribute to building a better community.

When our mission is to build strong familiesand strong communities, it is an honour toknow people feel we are meeting that mission. Now we have to take this information, from thismoment in time, and look forward to continueto meet the growing needs of our communityand not rest on our laurels.

Growth is projected for Northumberlanddespite our present economic climate. Wehave seen marked increases in membershipover the past year and we project conservativegrowth in the coming years. To support thisgrowth, our YMCA must continue to changeand respond.

We have had a very good year financiallybecause we spent only what was necessary andkept our operating costs as low as we could, allthe while with an eye on maintaining ourfacilities and continuing to be responsive andcreative in our programming and outreach.

We need to use this gain and positionourselves for the growth that is necessary totake our YMCA into the future. Building on our139 year history in the community and strongrelationships with local municipalities, wecontinue to work with the Town of Cobourg onour partnership model that will help us meetthe needs of our members and community withtheir health, wellness, fitness and recreationwell into the future. We also continue ourpartnership work with funders, other charitableorganizations, our members, our programusers, our volunteers and our staff.

Our focus on getting out there and serving

Moment in Time…In2008more people began tomake our YMCA their YMCA

our community allows us a complete picture ofcommunity needs and we continue to respond. In the past year our YMCA Strong KidsAssistance program provided over $137,000 infinancial assistance to help people of all agesin our community participate in programs attheir YMCA. We helped two local schools withlimited resources for physical activityprograms to bring over 130 students to theCobourg YMCA to improve their physicalfitness with our staff. We continue tostrengthen our partnership with the YMCA ofNicaragua through our CIDA partnership, providing skills and youth leadership trainingto marginalized youth. We created new andinnovative programs for seniors and otherswith physical limitations, and for youth todevelop and be physically active in fun, newways.

The pages of our 2008 Annual Report tellof people of our community who have eachhad a moment when the YMCA made theirdreams possible, influenced positive changesin their lives, and allowed them to make ourYMCA their YMCA.

On behalf of our Board and staff memberswe want to thank volunteers, donors, partners, funders and participants who have generouslygiven to their YMCA in so many ways over thepast year.

Jim Proskos Kyle BarberBoard Chair CEO

Jim Douglas is a changed man. Onceconcerned about his excess weight andhigh cholesterol, he is now an accredited

personal trainer and knows almost everyone byname at the Brighton YMCA.

The moment for Jim happened over nine yearsago when his doctor warned him, “If youwant tostayhealthy you’ll have to start going to thegymandeating right.” He took this advice very seriously andlost 30 pounds in the first year alone.

Jim remembers his doctor could hardlybelieve it, thinking it was impossible andrechecking him three times. He assured himthat it was indeed possible with the rightamount of determination.

For Jim, the weight that he lost was a greatstart but it was only the beginning. He startedworking out regularly at the YMCA in 2001 andcontinued to push his limits and boundaries evenfurther. In August of 2007, another momentcame for Jim when he made the decision to takehis fitness to the next level and began a veryrigorous training routine to prepare for his firstbodybuilding competition. He placed 2nd in hiscategory, an amazing accomplishment for abeginner in the Masters level!

According to Jim though, placing in thecompetition was only a fraction of the reward hefelt. What meant the most to him was being apart of the YMCA team that supported andencouraged each other. He built strongfriendships and was very proud of everyone whotook part in the event and challengedthemselves the way he did.

“We support and enjoy each other,” Jim says ofthe people he’s met through the YMCA. “It’s asmall community and we get to know each other.I know almost every face that walks through thatdoor because of the length of time I’ve beencoming here. I love the Y.”

Jim’s determination and drive for fitness hasbeen a motivation for people at the YMCA. Soonafter completing his bodybuilding competition, people began asking him for advice on their owntraining and routines. Another moment ofinspiration struck Jim and he decided to work onachieving his own Personal TrainingAccreditation. Now Jim spends his Wednesdayafternoons volunteering at the YMCA as a trainerand helping people of all ages become physicallyfit. So far he has trained six people from 12 to 78years of age. He loves the interaction with peopleas well as being able to encourage them to havethe same determination that he has.

“What I tell members as I am training them isthat the challenge is up to you but if you involveyourself in the YMCA and make an effort then youare going to enjoy it. It is going to becomesomething you like to do rather than somethingyou have to do. That’s the key.”

“...the challenge is up to youbut if you involve yourself inthe YMCA andmake an effortthen you are going to enjoy it.”

The moment came for 16 year old MeyadaWidaatalla when her family startedplanning a trip home to their native

Sudan. Meyada started thinking about thecountry, the issues, the life she has in Canadaand the educational opportunities she and hersiblings have.

Meyada knows that life is hard for children inSudan and she decided to do something aboutit. She developed a concept for her own projectand approached the International Committee ofour YMCA to help her link this with her part-time work here as a member of our youth andpre-school program staff. With the help andsupport of the International Committee, Donateto Educate was developed and introduced tothe children and families of our six YMCA ChildCare sites throughout Northumberland.

During YMCA Peace Week, Meyada visitedall our YMCA Child Care Centres and talked tothe children about Sudan; the culture, the food, the language, the issues, what life is like forchildren in Sudan, as well as their educationalneeds. She created posters for her campaignand urged families of children at the Child CareCentres to each donate one educational supplythat she could take in her luggage anddistribute to children in remote villages andcommunities in Sudan. Her efforts raisedenough pencils, erasers, markers, chalk, andother supplies to completely fill three boxes tobring on her trip. With the help of her aunt inSudan, she made arrangements to visit fiveschools. The International Committee alsoconnected her to the YMCA of Khartoum so shecould see their work and bring that knowledgeback to share here.

Meyada’s eyes were opened by the childrenof Sudan. They have very little, but they are sodetermined and just want to learn.

“They are just looking for hope,” she says.“You can see it in their eyes.”

She found that Sudanese classrooms have avery different atmosphere than the ones foundin schools here. The smallest class she visitedhad 37 children, and the largest up to 58. Theclassrooms were incredibly small andconstructed of dirt and bricks, lacking realflooring, stairs, and even water and electricity.

“Some parts of our world can be so ignored,”explains Meyada. “I remind myself all the timeto do my part in the world to help people andhelp others be aware of what’s going on outsideof Canada. You hear about these things, but Iactually saw it.”

Meyada’s friends, family and our YMCA areall very proud of her efforts and the successshe had by seizing the moment and actingupon her feelings and ideas. Now she isspending time visiting all our child care

centres again, showing them images of thechildren she met and thanking them for caringabout others.

For Meyada, the experience was veryrewarding and she was touched by howappreciative the students were for thegenerosity of the children and families whohad made donations to them. They were alsovery interested in learning about Canadathrough Meyada’s Canadian flag andphotographs of her life here.

“No matter what school I went to, or whatgrade, the students never failed to smile, amazed at the idea that children their age oryounger cared enough to dedicate their time andeffort to help them. Now I just want to do more.”

“They are just looking for hope, you can see it in their eyes.”

concentrate on their education while theirchildren of up to 18 months receive qualityYMCA child care on site at the school.

TEAM does a lot more for the young womenthan offer them a chance to fulfill their diplomarequirements. Aside from the educationalbenefits, the mothers become a part of a solidsupport system. After a short period of time, themothers and babies build strong, trustingrelationships with each other as well as the staff.

The moment came for Michelle Weaver, along time YMCA child care supervisor, when shedecided to take on the challenge of providingthe care for this program. It was a decision thathas changed Michelle’s perceptions of youth, her community and the way she provides care.“My hopes for these girls are for them to gain selfconfidence, self worth and realize who they areand who they can be,” says Michelle. “We make adifference in someone’s life every single day, andthey make a difference in my life.”

16-year-old Victoria, an expectant mother, can speak to the huge change that TEAM hasmade in her life. Victoria has had to overcomemany obstacles to become who she is todayand her determination for herself and herunborn son is tangible.

At just 14 years of age, Victoria left behind arocky home life to try and make her own way.No longer in school, she began using drugsand made some unwise choices in her life.Victoria soon found herself stranded withnowhere to go. She had run out of money, lostties with her family and was involved in anabusive relationship while battling anaddiction. It was at this point in her life shefound out she was pregnant.

The moment Victoria was told she wascarrying a healthy baby boy she becamedetermined to turn her life around. She says thenews was her turning point and inspiration toget on the right path. She began to concentrateon what was best for herself and her child, andput their needs before anything else.

“I believe you go through everything for areason,” she says, reflecting on her experience.“Eventually you’ll pull through. Everything I wentthrough made me strong enough for my child.”

Victoria now has a number of goals with herfirst priority being to live a better lifestyle withher son. She is working towards finishing herrequirements for her secondary school diplomawith the TEAM program while living at AlphaHouse, where she has also received a lot ofsupport. She believes she is in a better place nowthan she has been for years. Victoria says that theteachers, Michelle and all the TEAM staff reallydo care. TEAM is helping her learn everythingshe needs to know to change her life, and theyare supporting her every step of the way.

Last year a moment of opportunity camefor our YMCA to become involved in anexciting new program to help address

the issues of teen pregnancy and education. The Teen Educating and Mothering, or TEAMProgram was developed in partnership withour YMCA, the Kawartha, Pine Ridge DistrictSchool Board and Alpha House, a respitehome for young and expecting mothers. Theprogram offers young women the opportunityto attend secondary school and to be able to

“Everything I went throughmademe strong enough formy child.”

Being a stay at home parent can presenta number of challenges, but for RobDeperasinski the rewards far outweigh

anything else. Just over three and a half yearsago, Rob made the decision to leave hisposition as a funeral director to stay at home ina small rural community with his threechildren- Raquel, 10, Elsa, 7, and Kyle, 4.Although he loved his job, it carried a lot ofbaggage and had unpredictable hours, leavinghim with very little time to spend with his kids.He felt like they were growing up so quicklyand he was missing out on too much of it.

When Rob began staying at home with hischildren, he wanted to spend quality timedoing fun activities with them. They begandoing a lot of things together as a family, bikeriding, swimming, playing with all of their pets, and going on day trips. But Rob also wantedhis younger children to be able to interact withother children and he reached out to theCastleton Playgroup, where his wife had takenhis oldest daughter when she was small. Thisgroup meets weekly at the Town Hall and ispart of our YMCA Ontario Early Years MobileOutreach network of playgroups. Theplaygroups are managed by volunteer leaderswith support from Andrea Dunkley, our YMCAMobile Outreach Coordinator. Andrea visitsevery two weeks with programming, resourcesand parenting support.

At the end of last year, the moment camefor Rob when he made the decision to step upand volunteer to lead the playgroup himself.

Rob’s favorite aspect of leading theplaygroup is the social aspect of it. For thechildren, it’s not only a stepping stone forschool but also a lot of fun to play with otherkids. It is also a great way for parents to meet, share ideas and resources.

“We have about twenty to twenty five childrenwho come regularly. We really have a great turnout,” Rob says of the playgroup. “The parentshave great ideas for activities for the children sowe have a lot of fun.” The parents and childrensing songs, create art and craft projects, havelunch together, and just have a really good time.

“My favorite part is playing,” says Rob’s 4-year-old son Kyle, “and making crafts. I likedthe snowman I made out of marshmallows.”

One of Rob’s fondest memories of theplaygroup is the reunion he put together, which was a first for the Castleton group. A lotof older children who used to attend theplaygroup are now in full-time school, such asRob’s daughter Elsa, but they have fondmemories of their times with the playgroup. All the alumni children were invited to theTown Hall during the March break for a specialreunion day. The younger children were read

stories by the older children, played gamestogether and enjoyed a big lunch afterwards.

These experiences are what make being astay at home dad worthwhile for Rob. He isvery appreciative of the opportunity he has tobe involved in his community and in hischildren’s lives, creating memories andwatching them grow up.

“The parents have great ideasfor activities for the children sowe have a lot of fun.”

Haynes Printing has been a regularsupplier of our YMCA for over adecade, printing our schedules,

brochures and annual reports. Theircommitment to design excellence, service andenvironmental awareness is a major factor inthe long lasting relationship they have builtwith our association.

For years, Haynes has been dedicated tousing environmentally friendly printingpractices, using vegetable inks and alwaystaking care to recycle and reuse wheneverpossible. There came a moment in the past yearwhen they decided to take that commitmentone step further by becoming a ForestStewardship Council or FSC Certified printer.

“We have always tried to be environmentallyfriendly,“ says Frank Russell, President ofHaynes Printing, “but it is a transition. We haveimplemented changes and worked at it for years.”

Being FSC Certified means that HaynesPrinting is now a part of a ‘Chain of Custody’system. This means the printer’s customers canbe certain that from the tree farm through to thefinished product, all steps in the productionprocess are environmentally friendly. Some ofthe changes that Haynes has put into effectinclude removing wood alcohol from the printingprocess, eliminating the use of film from the pre-press process, and always recycling.

Obtaining this certification also means thatHaynes Printing follows a strict set of rulesincluding fully documenting every step they

take in the production process for every printjob they undertake with every client. TheForest Stewardship Council requires thisdocumentation so they can in turn offerconsumers a guarantee that the forestproducts they purchase come from responsiblymanaged forests and verified recycled sources.

Frank is proud of this accomplishment forHaynes and the satisfaction it offers theircustomer base. YMCA Northumberland is proudto continue our print relationship with acompany that is environmentally committed aswe move forward at this moment to addressenvironmental impacts for the future at our ownfacilities.
