Manager’s MemoWelcome to our April issue. Hopefully we are leaving all of the crazy weather

behind for a while, because we deserve some nice, sunny days and warm nights! Easter will be here in a few days. Every Easter we visit my family in the Worcester area, I come from a family of eight children, so things are always hectic but fun when we all get together. For the last 60 years my family has been going to a res-taurant in Rhode Island called Wright’s Chicken Farm. If you ever visit Warwick Rhode Island, you should go! They serve over 5,000 people on Easter day; we have to make our reservations a whole year in advance. There will be about 34 of us going this year so it should be a blast.

Last month we issued a check to the Berkshire Humane Society. The donation was possible because of the ads that ran in our Furry Friends section in the last issue, so thank you. We are also gearing up for our Kid’s Create An Ad. We have more schools involved this year than ever before. Contact us if you would like to be included in this publication.

Sticks and StonesSticks and Stones, the annual gala and performance will be on

May 1, 2010, at the Founders’ Theater, Shakespeare and Company, 70 Kemble Street, Lenox, Massachusetts. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with cocktails, the performance starting at 6 p.m., and concluding at 7:30 p.m. with a buffet reception and dancing. There will also be a matinee performance on Sunday, May 2 at the Founders’ Theater. This event is presented by Community Access to the Arts, nurturing and celebrating the creativity of people with disabilities through shared experiences in the visual and perform-ing arts. Joseph Leo “Joe” White, 65, died peacefully on Saturday, March 27th at home in the loving care of his wife and daughters after a two year battle with cancer. Born on May 19, 1944 in Pittsfield, he was a son of the late Joseph J. and Elizabeth Pelkey White. Their home was on Town Hill

Road in Middlefield. He was educated in Middlefield and Chester schools where he worked at area factories. He had also worked for Conrail for nine years and the Chester Highway Department for five years. A self-employed logger, he had worked in the logging and firewood business for over fifty years. Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a

passion for both vegetable and perennial gardening. His grand-children also brought him great pleasure throughout the years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Rocke White, two daugh-ters Theresa Fryer and her hus-band Terry of Lexington, KY and

Laurie Varelas and her husband Dean of Westfield. A son; Jeremy Wright and his wife Tami of Middlefield and two grandsons, Dean G. Varelas II and Alexander W. Varelas of Westfield. He also leaves four granddaughters; Caitlyn J. Fryer and Breanna M. Fryer of Lexington, KY, and Heather L. Sikop of Easthampton and Destiny M. Wright of Middlefield. Six brothers; Billy and Leon of Texas, Johnny of North Adams, David of Adams, Tony of Lee and best friend and brother, Jimmy of Windsor as well as his five sisters; Joann Kelton of Huntington, Linda Sampson of Lee, Irene Daniels of Adams, Sandi Stone of Pittsfield and Terry Bensen of Pittsfield. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins as well as his good friend Bucky Besaw. He leaves behind his beloved animals, Ozzy, Willy, Daisy and Lily. He was predeceased by his brother

Tommy. The White family wishes to express deep appreciation for the wonderful care received from Dr. Snowise and staff at Suburban Internal Medicine in Lee and to Dr. Harvey Zimbler and staff at Berkshire Hematology Oncology in Pittsfield who all made this journey a little easier to take. Joe’s love of the outdoors, big heart and the fact that he didn’t have a care in the world will always be remembered by anyone who had the pleasure to know him.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. at the Dery-Foley Funeral Home in Dalton conducted by the Rev. Levi Davenport. Burial will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joe may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires, 877 South St., Suite 200, Pittsfield, MA or to The Chronic Disease Fund, 6900 N. Dallas Parkway, Suite 200, Plano, TX 75024.

Pittsfield, Mass. — Hancock Shaker Village (HSV) kicks off its 50th anniver-sary as a living history museum with “Baby Animals on the Shaker Farm,” running April 3 through April 25, 2010. This annual spring celebration is one of the most excit-ing times of the year at the Village, when scores of baby lambs, piglets, calves, goats, ducklings, and chicks arrive at the historic Round Stone Barn.

The animals represent livestock once

kept by the Shakers, beginning in the 1700s and continuing into the 1960s. In addi-tion to the heritage breed animals raised by HSV year round, this event includes “guest” livestock raised by local farms and 4-H clubs. Visitors get to meet and greet the baby animals and participate in farm chores, such as helping to feed the animals and to save seeds. They may also participate in fun Shaker-themed craft activities, such as basket weaving, making and decorating

seed packets, and weaving on a small loom. The Round Stone Barn is the only circu-

lar barn ever built by the Shakers. Widely recognized as an architectural icon and agricultural wonder, this unique dairy barn originally stabled 52 milk cows. It has attracted visitors—most notably Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville, who staged a footrace in the structure—since its construction in 1826.

The largest gun show ever held in New York will be staged at the New York State Fairgrounds Expo Center in Syracuse New York, Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18. Collectors and dealers from all over the United States and Canada will provide over 800 exhibits and displays.

Featured will be displays and sale tables of U.S. Military arms; Colt revolvers; high-grade, double-barreled shot-guns, Remingtons, muskets, Smith and Wesson, Kentucky rifles, gun parts and accessories, Indian items, Frontier and Western paraphernalia, sharps, swords, Springfields, Winchesters, bowie knives, powder horns, civilian and military weapons from other nations, custom-made and factory-made knives, military relics and equipment before the Revolutionary War to the present.

While most items are for sale on a cash basis, gun shows cling to the old fashioned trade and barter way of doing business. Haggling for the very best deal possible is both expected and accepted. Old and unwanted guns are gladly purchased by our collectors who will pay top prices.

Admission is $6 per day (children under 12, with parents, free); $5 for seniors. The hours are 9 to 5 p.m. April 17 and 9 to 3 p.m. April 18.

Gun Show and SaleThe LYA’s Sweet Repeats Children’s Consignment Sale will be on

Saturday, April 10th and Sunday, April 11 at Lee Corporate Center (480 Pleasant Street / MA 102 West) in Lee. The Sale will be open on Saturday from 9am until 4pm and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Items include gently used spring and summer children’s (newborn - 16) and maternity clothing, toys, shoes, books, baby equipment (stroll-ers, swings, furniture, etc.) as well as seasonal sporting equipment. This is a great shopping opportunity and a portion of the proceeds will ben-efit the Lee Youth Association’s programs.

noon? Mass Audubon’s fourth annual Statewide Volunteer Day will offer proj-ects suitable for all ages and abilities. With your help, we’ll spruce up trails and gardens and dive into other spring cleaning projects across the state and

at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Pittsfield, MA. And, if you bring a family member who needs to fulfill a community service requirement, Mass Audubon is happy to provide a verifi-cation letter after the event.

Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for volunteers to assist with trail clearing, cutting and possibly burning invasives that grow in our wet meadows and fields, and preparing the Hummingbird Garden for spring and summer.

After a morning of hands-on work,

participants are invited for a free pizza lunch, and to explore the sanctuary. It’s amazing how much can be accom-plished in just three hours. At last year’s Statewide Volunteer Day we prepared the hummingbird and butterfly gar-dens for spring and summer; removed invasive plants; split firewood and

cleared trails. So bring your friends and family and
