Quick Start GuideThis chapter is designed to allow a rst-time X-Plane user to get thesimulator up and running in as short a time as possible. The goal is tobe in the air and fying within ten minutes o completing the installationwhile still learning the essentials o the simulator.

This chapter will gloss over a great deal o background inormation, and conguration o many non-essential options will be skippedentirely. It assumes that the computer X-Plane is being in- stalled on is

capable o running the simulator with its deault rendering options.Note that the minimum system requirements to run X-Plane are a 2GHz processor, 1 GB o RAM, and 128 MB VRAM on an independent(non-integrated) video card. However, the recommended specicationsare a 2 GHz processor, 2 GB o RAM, and 256 MB o VRAM.O course, X-Plane can take advantage o even aster systems, too.

Where the process diers between installing on Windows XP and MacOS X, the dierences have been noted. Ater getting o the ground

initially, you may want to continue reading the ull manual, or simplykeep it or reerence. I you have any issues while ollowing this guide, check the rest o the manual - the problem is very likely addressedthere, and youll save time or both yoursel and customer support.

Detailed inormation on installing and conguring X-Plane can be oundin Chapters 3 and 4. Detailed inormation on joystick conguration canbe ound in Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 contains more inormation on

setting up and ying the aircrat.

    2.1 Installing X-Plane

    1. Insert the rst X-Plane DVD into your DVD-ROM drive and wait or itto spin up.

    2. In Windows, i the operating system does not launch the X-Planeinstaller automatically, click the Start menu, then My Computer.Double click on the XPLANE10 DVD, then Installer Windows.exe.

    3. When the installer window appears, click Continue.

    4. By deault X-Plane will install to the Desktop. Though it can beinstalled elsewhere, it is strongly recommended that it be placed

on the Desktop so that it can be ound in the uture. For thepurposes o this guide, we will assume it is installed there.Click Continue.

    5. Accept the user agreement and click Continue once again.

    6. Select the scenery you would like to install. Depending on theinstaller on your disc, either all o the world or none o it willbe selected by deault. An unselected tile will appear bleached in

color, while a selected tile will have its ull color.7. I you are unsure what areas are currently selected, just click

Select None to turn everything o. From there, select theindividual tiles you would like to install by clicking on them.Additionally, you can click and drag to select large areas quickly.Note that or regions where no scenery is installed, only oceans andairports will be visible. When youre nished selecting scenery, clickContinue to begin installing. For the purposes o the Selecting a

Location section later in this guide, be sure to select the two tilesthat make up Americas West Coast, as we will be traveling to LosAngeles International Airport (KLAX).

    8. The installer will begin displaying its progress. When theinstaller prompts you to do so, remove the current disc and

insert the next. Note that installation may take anywhere romthirty to sixty minutes per disc, and that only one X-Plane disccan be in the system at once (the installer wont recognize adisc placed in a second DVD-ROM).

Installing the complete scenery package will consume about 75 GB ohard drive.

Scenery can be added or removed at any point in the uture byinserting Disc 1 and re-running the installer. When the X-Systeminstaller comes up saying \You already have X-Plane 10 installed on thiscomputer, click the Add or Remove Scenery button and proceed

just like in step 4 above.

    2.2 Launching X-Plane

    1. Make sure your USB joystick is plugged in. I this isnt plugged in

prior to launching X-Plane, the simulator will not be able to interacewith it. To avoid any possible problems, it is recommended that thestick be plugged directly into the machine rather than into a hub.

    2. Put Disc 1 into your DVD-ROM drive. Starting X-Plane withoutthis will orce X-Plane to run in demo mode only.

    3. Open the X-Plane 10 older (located by deault on the Desktop)and double click on \X-Plane.exe in Windows, or \X-Plane.appon a Mac.

    3. Move your joystick or yoke orward and back. A green or redbar should move as you do so. Click the drop-down menu next

to it and set it to pitch. Do not check the reverse box next tothis control unless, when fying, the aircrats pitch control isworking backward.

    4. Move your joystick/yoke let and right. The green or red barthat moves should be set to roll. Do not check the reverse boxnext to this control unless, when fying, the aircrats roll controlis working backward.

    5. Twist your joystick (i applicable). The bar that moves should be

set to yaw. I you do not assign a yaw axis, X-Plane will attempt tostabilize it or you. Once again, do not check the reverse boxunless, when fying, the aircrats yaw control is working backward.

I using rudder pedals instead o a twisting joystick, slide them orwardand backward and set the green/red bar that moves then to yaw.Additionally, only when using rudder pedals, press the let pedal downwith your toes. The green or red bar that moves should be set to let

toe brake. Do the same or the right pedal, and set that green bar to righttoe brake. I this is done, you may also skip steps 8 through10 below.

    6. Move your throttle orward and back (on a yoke, this istypically the letmost lever). Set this bar to throttle. Check thereverse box only i, when fying, the aircrats throttle controlworks backward.

    7. Move all the joysticks control axes (that is, pitch, yaw, roll, andthrottle) through their ull range o motion to calibrate the controls.

    8. Once again, skip this step and steps 9-10 i the rudder pedalsare set up as toe brakes. Click the Buttons: Basic tab at the topo the screen.

    9. Press the button on your joystick that you would like to assignto brakes, then release it.

I youre having trouble nding an airport using X-Planes built in searcheature, Airnav has a complete database that might assist in nding the ID

or ocial name o an airport youre looking or. Note that youll need itsthree- or our character identier when programming GPS waypoints, andthat airport IDs in the US (and only the US) have a K appended to the ronto them i and only i they are composed o all letters (and no numbers).More inormation on airport IDs can be ound on Wikipedias InternationalCivil Aviation Organization page, specically in the Codes registered withICAO section.

    2.6 Getting Off the Ground

Once again, these instructions are written or the Cessna 172 - fyingan airliner or another heavy aircrat will require faps/slats, a great dealmore speed, and a very dierent technique, all o which is beyond thescope o this chapter.

    1. The airplanes engine is already running. Press the button thatwas assigned to brakes when the joystick/yoke was congured.I no button was congured (e.g., i you are fying with themouse), press the `b key on the keyboard.

    2. Move the throttle all the way up.

    3. I applicable, use the joysticks twist or the rudder pedals tocontrol the planes let and right motion to track the centerline

o the runway (dont worry i you go o it - youll still get up tospeed or take o). I no yaw axis was congured above (or iusing the mouse), the simulator will attempt to control the yawor you.

    4. Watch your airspeed indicator (seen in Figure 2.9), and when ithits 60 knots, pull back slightly to get the plane o the ground.I using a mouse, you will have to click the white + sign (oundnear the center o the screen) with the mouse in order to grab

the controls with the mouse. From there, move the mousewithin the white box that appears in order to control theaircrats ght - moving it up within the box will pitch the nose

down, and moving the mouse down will pitch the nose up.Moving it let within the box will cause the crat to roll let, and

moving it right will cause the crat to roll right. Click the mouseagain to release the controls, reeing you to open a menu, adjust controls on the aircrat panel, etc.

Figure 2.9: The airspeed indicator in theCessna 172 [Full size!]

    5. Gently level the plane o in order to build a little airspeed, then, when the plane hits, say, 80 knots, pull back again tobegin climbing. Building airspeed this way will help to keep theplane rom stalling.

    6. Fly away!

    2.7 Updating X-Plane

    1. In X-Plane, move your mouse to the top o the screen (causingthe menu to appear) and click About.

    2. In the About menu, click About X-Plane.

    3. In the window that appears, there will be an Update X-Planebutton i an update is available. Clicking this will cause X-Planeto download the latest update and run the updater or you.

    4. The Installation les will be downloaded and installed, aterwhich you will be ready to fy.

    2.8 Further Considerations

Among the more important options skipped in the guide above was theconguration o fap and trim switches. I your joystick or yoke has switchesor buttons you would like to use or this purpose, you can congure themsimilarly to the brakes that we assigned in part 3 o this guide. Thedierence is that when using a switch, pressing it up will be assigned

one unction and pressing it down will be another. Remember to clickthe button on your joystick beore trying to assign it a unction. The aboveoptions can be ound in the Joystick & Equipment windows Buttons:Basic tab. Pitch, roll, and yaw trims are at the bottom o the rst column.Flaps, likewise, can be ound about three-quarters o the way down thesecond column. Further inormation on this can be ound in the sectionConguring Flight Controls o Chapter 4.
