Introduction: UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs

• The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme consists of the establishment of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks in higher education institutions.

• UNITWIN stands for the university twinning and networking scheme


Introduction: UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Cont’d

• Functions: To building the capacities of higher education and

research institutions.

To promote North-South, South-South and triangular cooperation as a strategy to develop institutions.



To foster collaboration among Higher Education, Research Community and UNESCO to achieve the MDGs.

To act as “think tanks” and “bridge builders” between the academic world, civil society, local communities, research andpolicy-making;



• Activities: Training, research and exchange of academics.

Information sharing in all fields within the competence of UNESCO

Interdisciplinary and Intersectoral collaboration with all programme sectors of UNESCO



• How to Establish a Chair: It could be a new or improved Teaching/Research Unit in the

University

It requires: A Chair Holder; A team of Lecturers/Researchers from Collaborating

institutions; Students from Host and Foreign Insts on PG training



• How to Establish a UNITWIN Network:

It consists of a number of universities in different countries that join forces and collectively sign a joint agreement with UNESCO.

The universities in different countries (North-South, South-South or North-South-South) may decide to pool their competences to address a need and in so doing establish a network.



• How to Establish a UNITWIN Network:

The Novancia Business School experience

In practice, institutions in the network progress towards establishing individual chairs.



• Procedure for submission of Proposal:

A tripartite relationship is required in the preparation of the proposal for a UNESCO Chair.

Lifeline for submission is April 30th every year.

It Comprises:the University;the UNESCO office; and the National Commission for UNESCO



• Recruitment & Appointment of Personnel:

Chair Holder or Coordinator:

Academic Reputation (An expert in the domain)Proven Capacity at National, Regional and International

levelsAbility to mobilize resources prom Private and Public

sectors



• Recruitment & Appointment of Personnel:

Women are encouraged as Holders/Coordinators

Appointment could be on rotational bases

Joint Leadership is equally supported



• Sources of Funds:

The overall success of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme depends on financial and in-kind support.

UNESCO is not a funding agency, cant be a major Donor

Proponents must mobilize financial partners



• Possible Donors: Bilateral Cooperation:

CIDA (Canada), SIDA (Sweden), French Development Agency, DFID (United Kingdom), NORAD (Norway) and Italy and Japan)

Multilateral Coopperation:(UNDP, UNICEF, UNIDO, World Bank, EU, ISESCO, ALECSO)

Private sector organizations:TOYOTA, SHELL, MITSUBISHI



• Possible Donors:

Host Institutions

UNESCO Participation Programme – The National Commission for UNESCO

UNESCO Budget – Seed Funding



• Criteria for Support:

Activities/Proposals MUST complement the relevant UNESCO programmes and activities approved by Member States of the Organization.

Close cooperation with ongoing UNESCO activities and programmes is of utmost importance.
