UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme

Brilliant minds for sustainable solutions

25th anniversary

2UNESCO Education SectorEducation is UNESCO’s top priority because it is a basic human right and the foundation on which to build peace and drive sustainable development. UNESCO is the United Nations’ specialized agency for education and the Education Sector provides global and regional leadership in education, strengthens national education systems and responds to contemporary global challenges through education with a special focus on gender equality and Africa.

The Global Education 2030 AgendaUNESCO, as the United Nations’ specialized agency for education, is entrusted to lead and coordinate the Education 2030 Agenda, which is part of a global movement to eradicate poverty through 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Education, essential to achieve all of these goals, has its own dedicated Goal 4, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The Education 2030 Framework for Action provides guidance for the implementation of this ambitious goal and commitments.

The University Twinning and Networking (UNITWIN)/UNESCO Chairs Programme has helped establish a network of over 700 higher education institutions in 116 countries. It promotes international inter-university cooperation and networking to enhance institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and collaborative work.

Through the programme, higher education and research institutions worldwide pool their resources to address pressing challenges and contribute to the development of their societies.

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2015-2030UNITWIN and the SDGs: Looking ahead to the future

The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme is an intersectoral platform that covers all areas of the organization: Education, Culture, Social and Human Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Communication and Information. It represents the combined power of brilliant minds from around the world to create sustainable solutions for today’s challenges and to think ahead of the future. The programme plays a key role by offering ideas, innovation, knowledge, information and support for achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development seeks to leave no one behind through working for people, the planet and prosperity. It aims to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom and is expected to be implemented by all of us in collaborative partnership. The SDGs are the heart of the 2030 Agenda, and represent a comprehensive results framework covering 16 thematic areas as well as global partnership and means of implementation.

The 2030 Agenda proposes a holistic approach to development strategies and calls for pursuing all dimensions of sustainable development in a balanced and integrated way. Its implementation requires an unprecedented level of commitment expressed through a strong collaborative partnership.
