‘As an adult returning to education, initially I had a feeling ofapprehension and little self-confidence, however, my experienceat WIT expelled those negativities and enabled me to embrace thelearning. The knowledge and experience of the lecturers helpedcreate an environment where interaction was encouraged. The classroom setting and group size was just right -not so big that you can get lost, but also not so smallthat you feel centre stage.

Adult learning is a wonderful time todiscover how much you already knowthrough your own life experiences.

On a personal level I have achievedsomething that I had always wanted todo. I didn’t have the opportunity to goto college after school. It’s a greatfeeling to know you’re never too old!!!On a professional level my qualificationhas opened doors for me in the field ofeducation, I am practising in a fieldthat I am passionate about, andwithout this qualification, I would nothave this opportunity.

If you are thinking about studying- jump and take that leap becausein adult education at WIT, you arevalued and encouraged. On a more practical level manageyour time well, use the library, and drink loads of water -it keeps the brain alert!‘

‘I chose the BA (Ord) in Applied Social Studies as I wanted togain a qualification while remaining in work. The part-timenature of the course was ideal, although it does require a lotof commitment. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and foundit extremely interesting and beneficial both in a professionalcontext and in general life.

The course has opened up new avenues of work for me, andthe work placements allowed me to gain experience in SocialCare areas that I had not worked in previously.

I would recommend this course to anyone working in socialcare without a third level qualification because it opens upmany doors. As well as finding the course beneficial to mywork, I enjoyed it immensely and found a huge sense offulfilment in learning new concepts. Finally completing adegree has given me the confidence to go further both in mywork and study.‘

The Higher Certificate in Arts in Advocacy Studies was designed by IT Sligo and is aimed at people whowork as advocates or would like to develop their skills in this area. The WIT/IT Sligo initiative offers a realcontinuing professional development opportunity for people working in the field of advocacy.

Advocacy is defined as representing others in areas where they required support, or representingpersons who cannot represent themselves. Advocacy services go some way to redress the inequalitiesbetween the individual and large powerful organisations. For many years, informal advocacy hasalways existed but formal services are beginning to develop particularly in the disability area. As suchit is away to ‘level the playing field’ for marginalised groups: it allows them to claim their entitlementsand exercise choices; and protects their quality of life in circumstances where they may be dependenton services.
