WINES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JUNE 2014 PAGE 1 Wines Times The final countdown A note !om Dr. DeYoung Dear Wines Families, As always, it is bittersweet to write the final newsletter of the year. Certainly there is excitement in the air about summer coming up, but this is also means we are at the end of a fantastic year. An amazing school I continue to be honored to work at such an amazing school with such great students, incredible staff members, and a parent community that supports us in every way possible. This year has been another excellent year and I’m incredibly proud of the work our teachers and staff have done to meet the variable needs of all students. As we look at both qualitative and quantitative data, we can say that we are meeting the needs of every child—though we will always seek constant improvement in our practice and remain focused on the wide variety of outcomes that indicate student success in school. Goodbye to 5th graders The end of the school year means we say goodbye to a fantastic group of 5 th graders as well as other students who are moving away from the Wines community. I hope everyone who is leaving us leaves with fond memories of your time here. We will miss you! Camp Tanuga Speaking of our 5 th graders, I had the pleasure of accompanying the kids and their teachers to Camp Tanuga last week in northern Michigan. We were fortunate to have perfect weather and the kids had a great time at camp. They participated in all the camp activities and I truly believe that the camp experience cemented the bonds among the kids that will last into middle school and beyond. I want to thank our PTO for helping support our trip and to all of our families for trusting us to take the kids away for three days! I’m thrilled that we were able to re-start this tradition at Wines. I also want to recognize Janet Heaton, Neil Duggins, and Julie Spiroff for coming to camp with us. While the adults certainly had a great time up there, it isn’t easy to leave your lives and family for three days. Looking ahead As we look ahead to next fall, we again are expecting a “full house” here at Wines. We have already met nearly 70 incoming kindergarten students and we will also welcome new students at every grade level. Classroom assignments While we are still finalizing a few things, we anticipate the following classroom assignments for next year (as always, this is subject to change during the summer):

Wines TimesThe final countdownA note !om Dr. DeYoung

Dear Wines Families,

As always, it is bittersweet to write the final newsletter of the year. Certainly there is excitement in the air about summer coming up, but this is also means we are at the end of a fantastic year.

An amazing schoolI continue to be honored to work at such an amazing school with such great students, incredible staff members, and a parent community that supports us in every way possible.

Goodbye to 5th gradersThe end of the school year means we say goodbye to a fantastic group of 5th graders as well as other students who are moving away from the Wines community. I hope everyone who is leaving us leaves with fond memories of your time here. We will miss you!

Camp TanugaSpeaking of our 5th graders, I had the pleasure of accompanying the kids and their teachers to Camp Tanuga last week in northern Michigan.

We were fortunate to have perfect weather and the kids had a great time at camp. They participated in all the camp activities and I truly believe that the camp experience cemented the bonds among the kids that will last into middle school and beyond.

A Note from Dr. DeYoung (cont.)! • Kindergarten: Shanna Middleton, Natalie

Hickman, Kelly House• 1st Grade: Laura Carlin, Janeen Eckel, Susan

Seely• 2nd Grade: Angela Black, Cheryl Day, Marcia

Gibbs• 3rd Grade: Paula Caruso, Millie Fisher,

Jessica Rodriguez• 4th Grade: Neil Duggins, Nick Mosher, and we

have one open position at 4th grade• 5th Grade: Janet Heaton, Julie Spiroff

The only significant changes for next year are at 4th grade. Neil Duggins will move back to 4th grade where he taught previously for 11 years (Neil’s classroom will remain in the portable and he has told me repeatedly he never wants to leave!). Karen Sanderson has recently announced her retirement from the Ann Arbor Public Schools after 22 years. We will be filling her position later this summer. At this time I do not know if this will be a new hire or if we will fill the position with an existing AAPS teacher seeking a transfer to Wines. We certainly wish

Karen well in her retirement and thank her for two years with us here at Wines.

ThinkStretchThinkStretch summer workbooks are coming home early next week. We will again have weekly playground sessions on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 PM throughout the summer. We hope to see you on the playground and we hope the kids spend a little time daily working on their workbooks.

Last (half) dayFinally, just a reminder that next Friday is a half-day of school. Students will be dismissed at 11:51 AM.

Thank you for another wonderful year. I’m looking forward to a little time away, but I’m already busy preparing for next fall!

Sincerely, David

The Wines PTO would like to express its sincere gratitude to all of you who gave your time, donated money, sat on committees, served in chair and board positions and attended PTO events this year.

It was a fantastic year for our children and we couldn’t have done it without all of your help!

We can’t wait to see what we can all accomplish together next year!

THANK YOU, WINES COMMUNITY!!

PTO VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP 2014-2015

It has been a great year. Thank you so much to all the students and families who have helped so much all year in so many ways. Special thanks to Linda Peppin and Margaret Compton for all their work on Art Night. Their amazing organizational skills and hard work created a wonderful evening. I truly appreciate all my wonderful classroom volunteers and also the students of Wines. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you. Thank you also to our generous PTO!

Please take advantage of summer to make some art and visit art museums. Both the University of Michigan Museum of art and the Detroit Institute of art have wonderful and free art workshops for children. I also highly recommend visiting the Heidelberg Project in Detroit to see Tyree Guyton's work. It is an eye-opening experience.

Have a great summer and make some art!

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD RESULTS

The 12th Annual Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad was May 10th at Pioneer High School, with approximately 2,600 children competing.

Thanks to our AWESOME coaches and AMAZING children, Wines had 20 teams that brought home medals and had great overall placement. Placement is determined by adding all “place points” together (each place = one point and if a school does not send a team they earn 28 points).  Wines Overall Placements• 5th grade team: 7th place. (There were 3 events for which we did not have

a team, thus the lower ranking.)• 4th grade team: 3rd place• 3rd grade team: 2nd place• 2nd grade team: 4th place

For the full list of placements, visit http://www.aaps.k12.mi.us/wesowizards.home/scoring_and_awards_may_10th__2014.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD RESULTS (CONT.)

Wines PhilosophyIf you were at the medal ceremony, it did not seem as though Wines did as well as we did. That is in part because Wines has a different philosophy regarding the Olympiad than other schools.

A few schools  practice year round, some have teacher involvement coaching the children as part of their curriculum, some host internal competitions and then only send their top scoring 2-3 students to compete, or some send the same child year after year to the same event, gaining more expertise each year.

Wines spent about 2 ½ months prepping their team this year with parent volunteers. We believe that children should be able to learn as many different topics as possible which is why we give priority to event newcomers when placing teams and we send ALL our children to the Olympiad. We believe it is not fair to ask them to prepare and not have the chance to attend.

Thank YouOur coaches are amazing!  The Olympiad requires so much of their time preparing and teaching our children; it really is a commitment above and beyond! On behalf of all the parents, we sincerely thank you!

The actual event requires over 500 volunteers, so if you volunteered on Friday or Saturday, we appreciate your time! Thanks to our Science Fun night volunteers and to Anita Fontana who again created our beautiful participation certificates.  We also extend a thank you to Dr. DeYoung for supporting the Science Olympiad program and who is one of the few elementary school principals who even attends the award ceremonies!

If you are interested in coaching or being a part of the event next year, please contact us.  Thank you!
