The Power of Wind

Wind is a limitless source of natural energy which has been

harnessed by man across centuries. However it is only in

the recent decades with the fast depletion of conventional

energy resources and growing concern over climatic

changes arising out of increasing carbon emission, focus

on the usage of wind as a key renewable source of energy

has increased worldwide. Wind power, as an alternative

to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed,

clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during

operation and uses little land.

Wind Energy in India

The development of wind power in India began in the

1990s, and has significantly increased in the last few years.

India has the fifth largest installed wind power capacity in

the world. Currently, the total installed capacity of wind

power in the world is over 250 GW and that in India is

over 17 GW. Wind power accounts for 6% of Indias total

installed power capacity, and it generates 1.6% of the

countrys power which is bound to go beyond leaps in the

years to come with the reforms in the Renewable energy

arena.

L&T in Wind PowerRealizing the tremendous potential of wind power and

the need to promote this limitless source of energy for

a sustainable future, L&T - Indias largest Engineering,

Manufacturing & Construction organization is playing a

crucial role in bringing wind energy to the forefront to

help India address the twin challenges of energy security,

combatting global warming and climate change. As a step-

up towards the wind energy development, L&T has set

up a wind farm of 8.7MW in the districts of Tirupur and

Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu which is generating over 19000

MWh of electricity annually. The project is eligible for

carbon credit under the clean development mechanism of

United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change

and is currently under validation.
