The Pastors Pen Several years ago I wrote an article about some of the symbolism I see in our sanctuarys main window. I thought it would be a good idea to bring some of those back up again. Trinity (John 14:8-31) - We believe in one God who is eternally existent in three persons”: The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. We call this reality Gods triune nature. The Trinity is represented in the window in several places Three Heads - Located on the bottom side of the upper pane. The three heads of the fish (see fishbelow) repre- sent the three personsof the one God. Each of them are displayed as distinct from the other yet equal in size and shape to teach us that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all God, equal in power and glory. Three Interwoven Diamonds - Located at the very top of the upper pane. These three diamonds are not all shaped the same but each of the shapes of the individual diamonds contributes to the shapes of the others. This teaches us that though the three personsof the Trinity are distinct, the attributes of each contribute to the essential reality of the others displaying for us the interwoven and dynamic self-community of our one God. Others - There are a few other places you might see Trinity represented, can you find them? Crosses (Matthew 27:38) - We believe Jesus made atonement with God on behalf of sinful human beings through his death on the cross. The three crosses, one in the upper pane and two in the lower, portray the crucifixion scene when Jesus was crucified along with two other men, one on his left and one on his right. Jesus cross is lifted up into the upper pane to teach us that after the crucifixion and resurrection Jesus ascended into heaven and was seated on the right hand of God. Heaven and Earth (Genesis 1:1) - We believe that both heaven and earth exist within creation, and they are both repre- sented by the two panes themselves; the upper one for heaven and the lower one for earth. Fish (Matthew 4:19) - Jesus told his first disciples that he would make them fishers of men. This evangelistic zeal is something we should all feel, and it is represented by three large upward facing fish that transcend both of the window panes. The fish portrayed on both the lower and upper panes teaches us that sharing the gospel with others is the way that God rescues people, moving them from this life to heaven. The Law and The Gospel (Matthew 5:17) - We believe that the Law of God was given to us to convict us of our sin and correct our behavior. We also believe that the Law can never save us because we can t live up to its perfect stand- ards. So for our salvation God gave us the Gospel, or the good newsthat in Jesus Christ we have forgiveness of sins and fulfilment of the Law.The Law and Gospel can be represented in the two large main diamonds in the lower pane, they are connected to each other Just as the Law and the Gospel are connected to each other. Threefold Christian Treasure (John 14:3) - We believe that Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again. This great affirmation is represented by the three small diamonds that span the middle of the lower pane. Time (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) - God has given us a fixed amount of time on this earth. Time is represented by the three hourglasses across the entirety of the lower pane. They are the lower half of the fish. The three hourglasses teach us that God has given us time in the past, gives us time in the present, and will give us a certain amount of time in the future. But we also learn from the hour glass that eventually its time does run out and the last grain of sand falls. We too will have a definite end to this life. But just as the beginning of this life belonged to God, the ending will belong to God also. Four Gospels and the Four Corners of the Earth (Matthew 28:19 & Acts 1:8) - We believe that there are four di- vinely authored books that share the same good news of Jesuswork; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We also believe that we must share that good news to every corner of the earth. This reality could be represented by the two divided cir- cles in the lower pane, one representing the four gospels sharing the same message, and the other the four corners of the globe awaiting that gospel message. The Pastor’s Pen

Several years ago I wrote an article about some of the symbolism I see in our sanctuary’s main window. I thought it would be a good idea to bring some of those back up again.

Trinity (John 14:8-31) - We believe in one God who is eternally existent in three “persons”: The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. We call this reality God’s triune nature. The Trinity is represented in the window in several places

Three Heads - Located on the bottom side of the upper pane. The three heads of the fish (see “fish” below) repre-sent the three “persons” of the one God.

This teaches us that though the three “persons” of the Trinity are distinct, the attributes of each contribute to the essential reality of the others displaying for us the interwoven and dynamic self-community of our one God.

Jesus’ cross is lifted up into the upper pane to teach us that after the crucifixion and resurrection Jesus ascended into heaven and was seated on the right hand of God.

Heaven and Earth (Genesis 1:1) - We believe that both heaven and earth exist within creation, and they are both repre-sented by the two panes themselves; the upper one for heaven and the lower one for earth.

Appreciation of Care Given to Roberta Mouheb

Windermere has received a generous donation from Roberta Mouheb’s family in appreciation for the per-sonal care many church members gave Roberta during her illness. These included our many prayers, the food we provided, and driving Roberta to some of her doc-tor appointments. This donation will be evenly divided between Outreach and our Special Music Fund as requested by the family.

The Jill Casey Memorial Library

August strikes me as a “transitional” month where we move from summer beach days, backyard grilling and vacations to preparing the yard for fall and the kids for school. Are you in a season of transition? Read what others have learned through their major

life transitions by checking out Growing Strong In The Seasons Of Life by Charles Swindoll or All the Places to Go… How will you know by John Ortberg. These and many other awesome books are in the CLIV (Christian Living) section of the library. Check it out! Marilyn Lobough, Librarian

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S NEWS

The WOC meeting will start its New Year on Sept. 14 at 10:15 a.m. Please come and see the changes we are making in the program! It will be different—we will begin with a short devotion and prayer. Then an ex-planation of the work of Women of Windermer and what we will be responsible for doing. Each monthly program will be different.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S PURPOSE - Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves: to nurture our

faith through prayer and Bible study, to sup-port the mission of the church worldwide, to work for justice and peace, and to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA)

and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

Prayers 4 Windermere by Email

or Robo Call

Thanks for your patience while Ron and I were trying to learn how to use the robo call program...trial and error! We accom-plished the task!

We are now able to reach our friends that do not have email with prayer requests for Windermere family and friends with a phone call. We have twenty-five on this list and they are delighted to receive updates by the robo call. A big thanks to Jeannette Ramsey for suggesting the robo service and to Kay Stowe/STC for implementing the program.

To our new visitors, if you would like to receive the pray-ers4windermere email, please contact me and I will add your name to the list for emails or for the robo call, if you do not have email.

Special Offering Follow Up

As you are aware, Windermere held a special offering on Sunday, July, 4 and Sunday, July 11 in response to GEM's Back to School Supply Drive. Contributions totaling $1395 were received! All proceeds from the offerings will be used to purchase a variety of school supplies for their three schools in Mexico, in particu-lar the La Luz School in Juquila. Thank you to every-one who participated and for your generosity and continued support of Global Education Ministries.

Mission & Service Committee

VBS 2021 Just like today, there are many opinions on who Jesus was during His time on Earth. In VBS this summer, we explored the journey of Nicodemus’ coming to faith in Christ. Nicode-mus, a Pharisee, was confused about Jesus, so he went to the Source…Jesus Himself. Jesus sent Nicodemus back to the Scriptures. Like us, Nicodemus had to discover who Christ is. Nicodemus started by going to Jesus in the dark and end-ed up in the light knowing that Christ was indeed the Messi-ah. (see photos below)

Thanks to Marilyn for leading singing and Cely, who as usu-al, had an amazing craft! Mary Kay helped me so much with decorations and Sue Stott who worked on registration and administration tasks and Freya who was our photographer. I cannot even begin to name all the people who helped for fear of leaving someone out, but a huge thanks!

Cristy Bain did a great job teaching the younger kids all about Jesus as the Good Shepherd. She had great lessons along with fun crafts and activities.

Even though it was an abbreviated VBS this summer, we had a great time learning about Jesus! To God Be the Glory !

It’s Bazaar Time

The 2021 Windermere Bazaar will take place October 2, 2021. Start looking for those rarely used, never used but could be used by another items Give new life to these items just in someone else’s house! Proceeds from the sale of these donated items will go to Christian based outreach programs both locally and interna-tionally. Tools, toys, sports and exercise equipment, small appliances, home decor, puzzles and furniture items always sell well during the bazaar. Furniture items this year will be limited to those that can be moved by two men. No clothing, car seats or items in need of repair please. Men’s Bible Study

Please join us for The Windermere Men’s Bible Study (WMBS) on Wednesdays, from 10:00 – 11:00 am in the Laura Coley Room.

The Windermere Men’s Bible Study is presently studying the book of Colossians. There are about 6-8 men currently attending and we would love to have more. The only requirement is a desire to grow in the Lord through the study of His Word – and to share your thoughts as we study the Bible together. Try it once and see what you think!

God Bless, Gary Galloway

Family Promise—InterFaith Hospitality Days August 3, 4, & 5

Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday, August 3rd, 4th, & 5th are the next days that Windermere will be serving homeless families in the InterFaith Hospitality Ministry (Family Promise of the Lower

Cape Fear). You can fix a dish for dinner on those days.

The sign-up chart is on the sign-up desk in the church narthex.

Plan now which dish you will make to be a part of one of the 3 dinners. (Currently there are 2 families totaling 11 persons in the church emergency housing section of the program. That number may change as the dates draw near.) Windermere has been a participant in this mission since Easter, 1996 when Inter-Faith Hospitality began in Wilmington. Her role has varied since the very begin-ning. You can give thanks that 80%-90% of the families entering the program have gone into their own housing, are working, and paying their own bills. If you have any questions, please talk with Walt Griffith, 392-3772.

NEWSLETTER NOTES FROM CANDY—AUGUST 2021 NEW MEMBERS INVITED - OPEN MEMBERSHIP - NO AUDITIONS - COMMITMENT EXPECTED The Windermere Adult Choir will begin weekly rehearsals on Wednesday, September 1, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. All are welcome, including high school students. We will also rehearse on Sunday mornings at 9:30

a.m. beginning August 1st. (Arrangements are made for those attending Sunday School to join us quietly after rehears-al has begun.)

Chime Choir will meet on Saturday morning, September 4, 11:30-12:15. At this first rehearsal we will have a train-ing and review session. Our Suzuki chimes are not as difficult to play as handbells. Some ability to read one line of music is helpful. At this rehearsal, we will set a regular weekly rehearsal time based on the individual schedules of members.

If you are interested in playing in an Instrumental Ensemble, please speak with Candy Williams. Watch for rehearsal announcements in the bulletins.

God Is With Us, a cantata by Tom Fettke will be presented by the Windermere Choir, Orchestra, soloists and friends on Sunday morning, December 12. Please put this on your calendar and plan to invite friends. Our Special Music Fund is used to hire orchestra players. Donations are welcome. (Designate Special Music Fund on your check.)

Contact our Director with any questions, Candy Williams (910-313-0243; [email protected]).

Twelve Apostles (Luke 6:13; Revelation 21:12) - We believe that Jesus chose twelve apostles for himself. There were also twelve tribes of Israel. Those twelve can be represented by the twelve quarter circles in the lower pane.

What Else? - Next Sunday take a look for yourself. I wonder if you can find any new symbols that would represent our faith and point us to God?
