*Restoring God’s Image Prayers of Confession

O Lord of Heaven and Earth,

We see all the divisions in our land and we worry. We read of great caravans

of refugees and we worry. We hear the fury of the campaign rhetoric and we

worry. We know the power of great storms and we worry. We feel the chaos

in our own lives and we worry. Forgive us Lord when we forget that all is in

your hands. Forgive us when our self-centered fears keep us from trusting

your love and grace. Free us to be your witnesses even in the darkest of

nights, that when facing the dangers, struggles and frustrations of life, we

may find strength and peace in knowing you are with us always . . .

~ We pray in silence as we stand in community. ~

*Assurance of Pardon*Congregational Response Now Thank We All Our God (vs. 2) Hymnal #14

O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,

With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;

And keep us in his grace and guide us when perplexed,

And free us from all ills in this world and the next.

Affirmation of Faith The Second Helvetic (Swiss) Confession (1561)

We believe and teach that God is one in essence or nature, subsisting in

himself, all sufficient in himself, invisible, incorporeal, immense, eternal,

Creator of all things both visible and invisible, the greatest good, living,

quickening and preserving all things, omnipotent and supremely wise, kind

and merciful, just and true. . . . We believe and teach that the same immense,

one and indivisible God is . . . without confusion distinguished as Father,

Son and Holy Spirit. . . We teach that this true God alone is to be adored and

worshiped. This honor we impart to none other. [Amen]

The tune “Tallis Canon” was written by Thomas Tallis in 1561. Tallis composed music during the difficulttime of conflict between the Catholic Church and the growing Protestant movement. Though remaining aCatholic, he retained the respect of both theological camps. “Tallis Canon” has been used with many hymntexts over the years including hymns number 714, 717, and 747 in our hymnal.

Go with us, Lord, and guide the way through this and every coming day,

That in your Spirit strong and true, our lives may be our gift to you.

The mission of Georgetown Presbyterian Church is to lead people to

a deep and continuing relationship with Christ as we seek

to become more Christ-like ourselves.

Remembering The Protestant Reformation

ON OCTOBER 31, 1517, Martin Luther is said to have posted 95 Theses (propositions) on

the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. Posting notices on the Castle Church door was

a normal way of communicating in the community. Luther intended to begin a dialog

concerning the church’s practice of selling “indulgences” for the forgiveness of sins as

well as discussing other practices that he felt attempted to place the needs of the church

ahead of discipleship to Christ. The discussion he sought, sparked a reform movement

that led to the Protestant Reformation and a division of the church. Other reformers,

including John Calvin, the theological forefather of the Presbyterian Church, and John

Knox, who brought the Reformation to English speaking peoples, contributed to the

spread of the Reformation. The Reformation established the principle that the

Church is always in need of being reformed, that is, always in need of becoming

more aligned with Christ. This principle of being continuously reformed challenges

both the conservative and the liberal impulses that characterize our diverse church

and culture today. This principle lifts up the idea that the church cannot reform

itself. God's agency and initiative have priority here. Yet we are called to be partners

with God in God's continuing work of reformation. The Reformation was a time of

excesses and violence on all sides. Even the Reformers were often in harsh disagreement

with each other. But as always, God continued to work through our excesses and

violence. Although Reformation Sunday celebrates the beginning of the Protestant

Church, the Reformation also lead to a transformation of the Roman Catholic Church.

Today, all three branches of the Christian faith (Roman Catholic, Orthodox and

Protestant) seek a deeper relationship with Christ and a fuller understanding of our calling

to be the one united Church of Christ.

Luther Calvin Knox
