It didn’t receive an effective English translation until 1683, but has remained a well-loved hymn ever since, thanks in part to its stirring tune. ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Passing of the Peace:The gesture is simple, but the meaning isprofound. When weextend our hand toanother, we identifywith Jesus, whoextended his life to thepoint of death to makepeace with humanity(Col. 1:20-21). What’smore, in the midst ofdivisions we symbolizeour unity throughhandshakes and hugs(Eph. 2:14-21). Likewise, when weregularly pass thepeace we practiceGod’s call to makeevery effort tomaintain the bond ofpeace (Eph. 4:3).

Hymn: These stanzas, excerpted from severalmore, offer a reminderthat the model for ourdealings with othersshould be God’sgenerosity rather thanlimited humantolerance. The text iseffectively set to abroad and sturdyDutch folk melody, which dates from the17th-century.

Sung Affirmation ofFaith: This text is a21st-century metricalparaphrase of theApostles’ Creed (in themanner of Calvin’sStrasbourg liturgy). Itsconnections withReformed tradition arefurther strengthenedby being set to thetune created for Psalm42 in the 1551Genevan Psalter (seealso no. 87).

Christ his only Son, our LORD; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of theVirgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; hedescended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended intoheaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence heshall come to judge the quick and the dead.
