WEST FRASER ROAD Flood Recovery Project • In May 2019, the ministry held an open house to show the magnitude of the damage to West Fraser Road, provide an update on the engineering work taking place and gather input from the community. Attendees favoured the ministry’s preferred realignment option on the east side of Narcosli Creek. For background, you can view the 2019 open house boards here . • In February 2020, the ministry announced that funding had been secured and plans would continue to move ahead to rebuild and realign West Fraser Road. • The route options were evaluated using 12 criteria including the conceptual construction cost, geotechnical, environmental, hydrotechnical, archaeological and socio-economic impacts, and other technical considerations. • The option selected by the ministry is a new 5.6-km long, two-lane paved road on a new alignment on the east side of Narcosli Creek, away from the active landslide areas in the valley. The new alignment includes a new two-lane bridge across Narcosli Creek. The selected option will cost $103.4 million to build.

Since the 2019 open house, the ministry has been finalizing the detailed design for the realigned road and has completed the following work:

• geotechnical investigation and testing

• a hydrological assessment

• an environmental assessment

• archaeological assessments

• functional design

• detailed design

• a Value Engineering (VE) study by an independent consultants’ team

• independent third-party reviews

• submissions for environmental approvals including the Agriculture Land Commission

• a submission for a licence to cut timber

• a submission to Transport Canada for a Navigable Waters permit

• a topographic survey of Narcosli Creek after the 2020 spring freshet

• a hydrological assessment after the 2020 freshet

• modification to the bridge design based on the damage caused by the 2020 freshet

NEXT STEPS

• Continue consultation with stakeholders

• Continue consultation with Indigenous community

• Obtain environmental approvals

• Complete property acquisitions

• Complete tender documents and drawings

• Tender the project in fall 2020

• Start construction in spring 2021

• Finish construction in 2023
