Keeping you informed on all things Welmede.

Avenues Group and Welmede announced today that they have merged. Welmede has become an operating subsidiary of Avenues Group.

Our organisations share similar visions and values, making them an excellent fit. By combining our resources and expertise, we believe that the merger will enhance and strengthen our work, create opportunities for supporting more people in local communi-ties, and provide greater resil-ience to cost pressures and future challenges in the social care sector.

Formal discussions have been taking place since April this year and due diligence was carried out over the summer. The boards of Welmede and Avenues met independently in

September and each approved the merger, and statutory bodies have now provided final clear-ance. Service users and their families, staff, stakeholders and commissioning partners have been informed. Of paramount importance during our discus-sions have been the people we support and those who will need support in the future. We are committed to ensuring the same quality service provision for everyone, and service users will continue to have the same support workers.

Another of the key aims of the merger is to protect services and job security for as many of our loyal workforce as possible by reducing expenditure and becoming more cost efficient. No support staff are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the merger.

With Welmede’s housing experi-ence and Avenues’ expertise in providing care for people with complex needs or challenging behaviour, the dovetailing of our organisations should result in a ‘win-win’ situation for all.

Steve James, Group Chief Executive Officer at Avenues says, “It is well known that the care sector is under severe finan-cial constraint and this is likely to continue for the time being. We feel that strength can be drawn from combining the expertise of our two organisations and that by going forward together we can enhance our model of best practice for our service users and maintain the highest quality of care.”

Mark Packer, Chief Executive at Welmede says, “We are delighted that the merger process has been completed and it is representa-tive of our shared values that this has happened so smoothly. Our commitment is to provide the highest quality services to all the people we support as well as developing new and innovative schemes as part of the Avenues Group. Together we will be stron-ger in these challenging times.”

We took 3 awards at this years Surrey Care Awards. They were: Care Employer of the Year Award, the Chairman’s Special Award and the Beyond the Call of Duty Award, won by Darius Carpio.

Welmede was judged Care Employer of the Year for recognising the fact that staff at every level of the organistion have an important role to play in the delivery of successful services, whilst the Chairman’s Special Award rec-ognised the investment and strength of Welmede’s many nominations.

John Langan said of winning the Care Employer of the Year Award: “I was delighted to receive this award on behalf of Welmede and

all of our staff. Any organisation is only as good as the people it employs and the award reflects the tremendous work we have undertaken not just in recruit-ment but also training and devel-opment to maintain a continu-ing focus on improving the care we provide to all the people we serve”.

We must also recognise Darius Carpio’s individual award for always going the extra mile for both service users and col-leagues. Well done Darius!

Congratulations to all of our final-ists. We truly believe that each and every one of you should have won. Lets see what can be achieved next year!

This year, we held our first Christmas competition in which teams and service users had to decorate their services and departments for a chance to win a team prize of £100 for first place, and £50 for second place.

The services/departments that got involved this year were:Moor House

Pinewood & Copse Lea

Chaplemede & York Lodge

Church Farm Bungalow

Sandalwood

HR & Finance

Community Services (represented glamorously by Stephen Diplacito)

Pinewood Copse Lea

Church Farm Bungalow Sandalwood

HR & Finance Community services

Congratulations to Sandalwood and Moor House who came first and second respectively!

Jayne Kilgallen, who judged the competition gives her reasons on why these two services stood out,

‘‘There were some spectacular displays out and about in the houses and at the Byfleet office but there can only be one winner.

This was Sandalwood who had a great display inside and outside. The important factor for me was evidence that the people living in the houses were involved, and here two of them took part in the shopping and also putting up of decorations. What impressed me was a member of staff describing how one of the individuals was sticking decorations on his window and another involved in hanging some up. The men living there have a significant learning disability and this was a great example of supporting people to be engaged no matter what additional needs they have. Using the Active support model there is always some easier component that people can do in any task, and that doing things little and often with just enough support enables people to be engaged.

Well done to the staff team at Sandalwood.

In second place was Moor house, and again people were actively involved in choosing and putting up the decorations. When I visited the staff stepped back enabling one of the tenants to show me all of the decorations and explain who had done what. The staff did give one prompt….to point out the festive toilet paper, but this was another great example of just enough support, not too much and not too little. They also had a real tree!’’

Outdoor clothing retailer Patagonia reached a record-breaking $10 million in Black Friday sales and is donating every single dollar to helping save the environment.

Last week, the company announced they would give 100 percent of their global retail and online Black Friday sales directly to grassroots nonprofits working on the frontlines to protect our air, water and soil for future generations. Customers began calling it a “fundraiser for the earth.”

The response was beyond expectations.

“We expected to reach $2 million in sales—we beat that expectation five times over,” the company announced on their website. “The enormous love our customers showed to the planet on Black Friday enables us to give every penny to hundreds of grassroots environmen-tal organizations working around the world.”

Patagonia has been a longtime steward of protecting the environment, donating 1 percent of its daily global sales to green causes and urging its customers to buy fewer jackets to combat the fashion industry’s wasteful culture. Earlier this month, it announced its re\collection line of jackets and other gear, which are made of “as many recycled materials as possible.”

SECRET SANTA&

JUMPER DAY 2016 19/12/2016 This year, 28 of us got involved with Secret Santa, and so thank you. The presents were handed out in true Christmas style by a suspiciously familiar Mr. & Mrs. Clause...

We also raised £64 (with donations still coming in) for our Charity of the Year, White Lodge, through £2 donations from those people wearing Christmas Jumpers,. Thanks again for your kind donations.

Mishy Gibbons, Finance Supervisor, said,

‘‘It was a truly brilliant day enjoyed by all head office staff, team leaders and managers. It’s great to have such a fantastic team enjoy the festive spirit of Christmas whilst raising money for White Lodge.’’
