CHRISTMAS IN GREECE

very Christmas the people in Greece eat turkeys, pork with plums and more. On New

Year’s Eve the people make “vasilopita”, a traditional cake and at twelve o’ clock midnight they celebrate the New Year. At midnight people sleep and Santa Claus leaves the presents under the Christmas tree.

CHRISTMAS STORY

nce upon a time there was a child named George who was looking forward to the

Christmas celebrations because he and his family would decorate the house with ornaments and guests would come to the festive table. But the child did not believe in Santa Claus like all the children of the

neighborhood, and said that Santa Claus did not exist.

On New Year’s Eve many people gathered to the child’s home to celebrate, eat and drink. As it was quite late at night, the children went to bed. Suddenly, a noise was heard out of the chimney. Then, the children woke up and you can’t imagine what they saw! There in front of them the real Santa was standing. He was an old man, quite plump and with red clothes. George approached him and then Santa said to him: “The reason I’m here, in front of you, is because I know that you doubt my existence. Well, I’ m red! That’s why I made an exemption, as everyone knows that Santa Claus does not come when children are awake! And George answered: “Well, I’m actually shocked. From now on I will definitely believe in you. Thank you Santa”.

And then Santa Claus left the presents under the Christmas tree and continued his long journey.

CHRISTMAS IN GREECE

n Greece we celebrate Christmas traditionally. There are many Christmas

traditions and customs throughout the country. We always decorate a Christmas tree (a fake or a real one) or a boat with colorful lamps on it! We always make traditional sweets, such as melomakarona (made with oil, orange and flour) and kourabiedes (made with butter and sugar). On Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve children (younger and

older ones) go door-to-door and sing the Christmas carols. People give them money or treat them sweets. It’s great to have a Christmas time in Greece!

Christmas in France

raditionally in France if there is a Christmas tree it is decorated with

candies, nuts and small toys by Pere Noel (Santa Claus) when he visits the children on Christmas Eve. French children will leave their shoes by the fireplace or by the door for Pere Noel to fill them with gifts.

In France a crib is often used to help decorate the house. French cribs have clay figures in them.

The main Christmas meal, called Reveillon, is eaten on Christmas Eve. They also eat roast turkey with chestnuts, roast goose, oysters, foie gras, lobster, venison and cheeses. For dessert, a chocolate sponge cake log called a buche de Noel is normally eaten.
