Heavenly Father, You say we are the sheep of your pasture, but we confess we feel like lost sheep. Forgive us, Lord. Find us, Lord, and call us back into Your fold. Amen.

Prelude and Hymn 440Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

was a Black English composer who achieved

immense success on both sides of the Atlantic

before his untimely death in 1912. While

visiting the US, he heard the Fisk Jubilee Singers and became interested

in African-American spirituals, eventually

arranging many of them for piano. Coleridge-Taylor’s arrangement,

heard as today’s prelude, is the first published

version of Hymn 440; the American composer Henry T. Burleigh later

harmonized it as a hymn tune.

*Congregational Response O-Ló(Sung by a Soloist, then by the Choir, then by All.)

Let all nations praise the Lord,And all people bless God’s name, For God’s faithfulness and loveAre forever firm and sure.

Brick's Golden Verse Acts 2:42-47

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds[a] to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home[b] and ate their food with glad and generous[c] hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Great Prayer of ThanksgivingLeader: The Lord be with you.People: And also with you.Leader: Lift up your hearts.People: We lift them up to the Lord.Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Sanctus 580 John Merbecke (c.1510–c.1585)Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory: Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High. Amen.

The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Words of Institution

Holy Communion Communion Anthem Holy Manna Alice Parker (b. 1925)

Brethren, we have met to worship And adore the Lord our God; Will you pray with all your power While we try to preach the Word? All is vain unless the Spirit Of the Holy One comes down; Brethren, pray and holy manna Will be showered all around.

Sisters, will you join and help us? Moses’ sisters aided him. Will you help the trembling mourners Who are struggling hard with sin? Tell them all about the Savior, Tell them that he will be found; Sisters, pray and holy manna Will be showered all around.

Is there here a trembling jailer Seeking grace and filled with fears? Is there here a weeping Mary Pouring forth a flood of tears? Brethren, join your cries to help them; Sisters, let your prayers abound; Pray, O pray that holy manna May be scattered all around.

Let us love our God supremely, Let us love each other, too; Let us love and pray for sinners Till our God makes all things new. Then he’ll call us home to heaven, At his table we’ll sit down; Christ will gird himself, and serve us With sweet manna all around.

— George Askins (d. 1816)Prayer after Communion

World Communion Sunday

The first Sunday in October is designated

as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates

our oneness in Christ with all our brothers

and sisters around the world. Paul tells us that

we are to “discern the body” when we partake of Holy Communion,

mindful that we note our relationship to all our brothers and sisters in

Christ in the celebration.

The Brick Presbyterian Church Mission Statement

The PostludeThe congregation is invited to continue worshiping through the postlude, which is offered as a thanksgiving to God.

Hymn 398On a Sunday morning in 1962, Doris Akers gathered with her choir to pray before worship. One person’s prayer inspired the next, and soon the choir was in danger of missing the service entirely. Finally she said, “We have to go. I hate to leave this room, and I know you hate to leave, but you know we do have to go to the service. But there is such a sweet, sweet spirit in this place.” The next morning, she wrote down the music to this song.
