Wunderbar! Champions of the world

An amazing 2014 World Cup comes to an end with German glory and, unfortunately, Brazilian humiliation – we look at the best of the action

The Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup has turned out to be full of shocking of defeats, heart-pounding action and heart-warming triumphs.

The semi-finals were packed with action and upsets; the most unfortunate of which was the fate of host Brazil. It appears some punters had been right, that there were only two or three stellar players on whom the

“the lottery”, decided who would advance. Argentina’s Sergio Romero was the hero, sending his country through with two fantastic saves including the critical first penalty kick from Dutch defender Ron Vlaar.

Javier Mascherano was the unsung hero (above much-touted Lionel Messi) who admirably shut out Dutch danger man Arjen Robben for most of the match.

The final: Germany vs arGenTina [1-0]The player regarded as the world’s best, Messi, went up against the team that is currently regarded as the world’s best, Germany. Teamwork and a brilliant goal made the difference.

The Albiceste from South America put up a passionate fight but Messi and his comrades could not find a break against the Germans.

In the 112th minute, deep into extra time, Mario Goetze volleyed a cross and slotted the ball past the Argentinian keeper. While hearts were broken, it is undeniable that Germany had performed consistently well, and had been a well-oiled machine with various parts of the team working in unison.

The biggest footballing stage in the world has now come to its curtain call and the new champions of the world have taken their final bow. But, happily, we have a host of memories and moments to take with us till the next tournament.

Life by LatWhether known as Lat, “The Kampung Boy”, or even Datuk, this well-loved comic legend is still drawing and shares his thoughts

Till today, Datuk Mohd Nor bin Khalid, better known as the

cartoonist Lat, gets salutes and gasps when he is seen is public. This gives you just an idea of the respect that is still accorded to this Southeast Asian

cultural icon.Lat first charmed the

world with his cartoon illustrations in the 1960s and 1970s, especially with his breakthrough graphic novel, The Kampung Boy (1979). His illustrations, including for Berita Minggu and The New Straits Times, depicted Malaysia’s cultural, social and political realities, without bias. He has published more than 20 volumes of cartoons so far.

Lat was in town for The Arts House’s spotlight

on Malaysian writers in conjunction with CausewayEXchange (CEX), an annual festival that showcases artists and writers from Singapore and Malaysia with the aim of promoting collaboration.

“In Conversation with Lat” kicked off the programme, in an intimate session where the audience could discover what makes Malaysia’s comic legend tick. We were privileged to meet him in a preview.

Do you still draw in the same way,

or using the same method?Mentally, I’m still the same. I still use ink, brush, markers, etc. to draw. Some may think it is “primitive” but it’s the only way I know.

I find I still belong to the last century. Today we would call them “grandfather stories”, but grandfather stories will always be around. We meet them [grandfathers] to remember these stories.

You’ve drawn about your childhood and other times in your life. Which was the happiest moment for you?

My childhood days, and when I saw my first comic drawing come out in the “Funny Bones” section of Movie News magazine. If you sent something in and it was used, they would send you two cinema passes. My father was very impressed.

As Bhagwan Singh [an Indian diplomat] said, “The happiest days of life are school days.” I think for me that was so.

Having been “The Kampung Boy”, do you miss the kampung life? The small community I’m living in still practices

kampung ways, and I’m involved in my community.

What else would you like to draw that you’ve yet to?Now, it is what not to draw. I think, “If I draw that, somebody will get angry.” I’ve been drawing for 50 years. [Lat started drawing in 1964.]

If you had a time machine, when and where would you go?We experience everything at a time when it really fits. It’s how you handle that time. I’d rather be here and now. I don’t think that [time travel] is really fun.

If you weren’t a comic artist, what would you have been?I’ve actually dreamt of playing in a nightclub. If not for drawing art, that’s what I would have done.

What other upcoming project can we expect to see you involved in?My story, in a cartoon book on Lat. I’m now talking to a writer.

I think if I can show the relevance of traditional ways of living, I can still be of some use today, and I’m happy.

and Oscar-winner Christopher Walken as mobster Gyp DeCarlo.

Eastwood, who also produced the film, said, “I have always loved the music of The Four Seasons, so I knew it would be fun to revisit that but what mainly interested me was how these semi-juvenile delinquents, who didn’t grow up under the best of circumstances, made it big.”

He added, “They were living on the periphery of the mob,

pulling off petty crimes and what have you. Some had even done jail time. Then the music came and pulled them out. It gave them something to strive for.”

This is the kind of story that has tugged at heartstrings around the globe. Of course, it helped that The Four Seasons had catchy hit songs.

haPPy, CatChy tunesThe production also travelled

to New Jersey to capture some exterior shots, including on the very street and in the very home where Frankie Valli grew up. There, the filmmakers and crew stood back as John Lloyd Young and the real Frankie Valli took a moment to sit together on the stoop of that house to reflect on the journey of four guys from Jersey who left an indelible mark on musical history.

Said Eastwood, “I know audiences will come out of the

theatre humming the songs and that’s great. But I also hope they enjoy learning the story of where those songs come from and remembering the four young men whose legacy is still being felt today.”

If you loved the stage musical, you’ll love the film. Either way the hits of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons will get you grooving and bring a smile to your face.

Cakes Galore at BreadtalkBreadtalk’s new cakes and revamps of existing recipes

As Marie Antoinette supposedly said before the French Revolution, “Let them eat cake!” Breadtalk probably had the same idea when they launched five new cakes and revamped the existing ones, resulting in a staggering 12-cake introduction.

The 2014 New Cakes Collection sees more Japanese inspiration and techniques incorporated into the cakes. The new signature cakes include a range of flavours from Salted Caramel Surprise to Oreo Cheese cake.

Great teatime CakesAmong the new signature cakes, I felt that the Salted Caramel Surprise ($28.80-$36.80) was the best of the lot. The caramel flavour is evident and there is a surprise burst of gula Melaka genoise sponge layers.

The Chantilly cream overlay is also infused with caramel sea salt and a sprinkle of walnuts.

The Cheesecake Originale ($35.80) is

also one for cheesecake lovers. This full-flavoured creamy cheesecake is decadent with a thin layer of Chantilly cream and berries. However, some of the cakes fell slightly flat.

The best reinterpreted cakes were definitely the Peanut Butter Better ($28.80-$36.80) and the Black Forest ($33.80-$43.80). If you like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, you’ll enjoy the

former very much. Creamy peanut butter

icing layers a genoise sponge cake with caramel almonds encircling the cake. I practically scraped off all the icing to devour it.

The Black Forest Cake was a surprise shoo-in as well with a light chocolate almond sponge base, chocolate cream, the all-important Kirsch cream – a whipped cream infused with fruit brandy - and dark sweet cherries.

Failure to launCh?However, I was disappointed in the Azuki Macha ($29.80-$39.80) cake as the green tea flavour was not strong enough and it was engulfed by saccharine-sweet Chantilly cream. They should have focused on green tea cream instead, in my opinion.

As for the Mango Paradiso ($32.80-$42.80), the mangoes appeared a little unripe, resulting in a sour punch.

Still, all in all, it is a good improvement for Breadtalk cakes as the texture and some flavours are better.

Abalone treasures at Min JiangMin Jiang at One-North launches its seasonal abalone menu

If you’ve never had a reason to visit Min Jiang at One-North, located within Rochester Park, now you do with its seasonal Abalone Delights menus.

Master Chef Goh Chee Kong of Min Jiang at One-North has created a menu that befits the season of these molluscs from Australia, available from Jul 15 to Aug 14,

abalone surprisesThe Abalone Delights menu ($128 per person, minimum two) features

six courses including dessert. The meal opens with an Abalone Trio Platter ($28 a la carte) with an abalone roll with green apple and truffle oil, pan-fried abalone stuffed with prawn paste and a steamed xiao long bao topped with a mini abalone.

I liked the abalone roll best as the green apple provided a refreshing crunch to match the chewy texture of the abalone.

Then, along comes a Double Boiled Abalone with Morel Mushrooms in Shark’s Bone Cartilage ($32 a la carte) and a Braised 4-Head Abalone

with Millet Broth ($48 a la carte). Both dishes come with sizeable portions of whole abalone.

Fried riCe paradiseThe main carbohydrate for the meal is Fried Rice with Baby Abalone and Crabmeat ($28 a la carte for one), peppered generously with baby abalone. The fragrant fried rice with eggs and spring onions is given a touch of lux with the abalones and crabmeat.

Also included in the menu is Fried Abalone and Pine Nuts in Spicy Sauce ($14 a la carte for one). Wrapped in a fried filo pastry net, the abalone is stir-fried with pine nuts and capsicums.

This dish is slightly spicy and the pine nuts added a certain sweetness to the dish. The abalones were still juicy despite the high heat used.

Dessert has no abalone in it, just in case you are wondering. A refreshing light pandan jelly with lime sorbet rounded off the meal.

taBle ServiceGlamour is key in the dining room. The designers achieved this with wood-grain vinyl floors, a sleek wooden dining table and strong baroque patterns on the upholstered dining chairs and settee.

Since entertaining is such a big part of the homeowners’ lifestyle, the designer made sure that there is plenty of space to pull up more chairs around the table.

Perfect HoStHosting dinner parties and informal gatherings is now possible after the designer opened up the kitchen and installed an island counter.

The island and the flanking cabinets are made from black and brown wood. They were then topped with a granite counter for a polished feel.

Big Screen BeautyThe spare bedroom is now an entertainment zone, complete with an 81-inch projector, blackout window blinds and wall-to-wall carpeting. The ceiling and walls were painted in dark colours to heighten the home theatre experience.

The addition of a sofa bed and a cantilevered study table make this a multi-purpose room without adding bulk to the space.

SimPle luxurieS The master bedroom features a pared down aesthetic. It’s the attached bathroom, however, that catches the eye.

Here, half-height glass walls open up the space and allow the bronze-tinted tiles to subtly glisten in the light. By moving the wash basin out of the bathroom, the designer managed to free up more space.

Storage has also been conveniently designed into the walls for an integrated look.

Why you should visit Luang Prabang now!

It’s a great time to experience unspoiled Luang Prabang before crushing hordes of tourists arrive by the plane-load

For decades, Luang Prabang been a favourite among backpackers determined to take

the arduous yet often more rewarding “road less travelled”.

As a relatively unspoiled destination, Luang Prabang – about 300km north of Vientiane in Laos – offers travellers a rare experience of traditional Lao culture and their way of life. However, recently, Luang Prabang has been fast-becoming a hot destination for everyone, as accessibility to this small town of 60,000 gets better and easier.

Fortunately, Luang Prabang has a good mix of sophisticated cafes, hotels, and fusion restaurants catering to foreign tastes while maintaining its distinctive Lao culture. Before this scene disappears with the arrival of plane-loads of global tourists, here are some must-sees.

Ancient trAdition – Alive & WellThe Tak Bak or Almsgiving ritual in Luang Prabang thrives to this very day. Single files of monks, from every temple, march onto the streets to receive food from the residents.

They appear to move in a somewhat meditative state, with the oldest monk leading the way, while almsgivers quietly place food, flowers, or incense into the alms bowls.

This is a must-see occurrence, with opportunities to

photograph vivid scenes. But you’ll have to arrive before dawn to catch it.

If you miss it on any particular morning, don’t worry. They have been doing this every morning for centuries!

the living templesDespite the fact that Laos is a communist country, the people’s reverence for Buddhism remains highly-guarded. Within the small city limits of Luang Prabang, there are 32 temples, which are protected by the UNESCO World Heritage programme.

The oldest temple, Vat Visounarath, dates back to over five centuries, and still serves as an active place of worship for the locals. Nevertheless, the crowning jewel is Vat Xieng Thong – The Temple of the Golden City.

Built in the late 15th Century, this temple exemplifies the iconic graceful and sloping roofs and ornate gold-gilded carvings on the façades of classic temples. Its surrounding chapels and shrines within the compound

are decorated with intricate paintings, depicting stories of one of their legendary kings. Refurbished in the 1960s, the Temple remains an oasis of spiritual splendour to this day, serving devotees and travellers alike.

BreAthtAking vieWs from mount phou siLuang Prabang is situated along verdant rolling hills and mountains. Its highest peak is over 2,000m, but the most popular is Mount Phou Si (pronounced Mount Pu-See) located in the centre of the town.

Rising over 100m (or about 25 storeys high), the steep and irregular steps lead travellers to an ancient stupa, and a wondrous panoramic view.

The highest point on the top is a small perch – room enough for one – overhanging the side of the hill. Tourists queue for a chance to snap selfies with the mighty Mekong River, the valley and its surrounding hills from this precarious vantage point.

mekong & pAk ou cAves (tAm ting)After a strenuous climb, reward yourself with a calm and relaxing cruise down the Mekong. Starting from the Tibetan Plateau, the Mekong River, the 7th longest river in Asia, meanders thousands of miles to arrive at Luang Prabang.

The two-hour upstream journey from Luang Prabang by longboat is the only way to get to Pak Ou Caves. Carved out of the limestone cliffs, the Pak Ou Caves house thousands of Buddha statues, ranging from 2cm to life-sized ones.

thAilAnd - gAteWAy to indochinALike many unspoiled places in Indochina, there is no direct flight from Singapore to Luang Prabang. Travellers must transit from another hub.

That’s why using Bangkok as a gateway into Indochina is a great idea. Spend a night in Bangkok, get your shopping fix, then conveniently hop on to Luang Prabang from there!

Hate crowds? Avoid the peak tourist season from October to January, which is also the cooler season. Be prepared for the rainy season in the summer months with short bursts of rain daily, just like in Singapore.

The caves continue to be an active area for devotees as part of their pilgrimages during the Lao New Year period. Facing the cave, across the river, is Ban Pak Ou (Village), where the restaurant overlooking the river serves Mekong carp and mountain vegetable dishes. Humble, yet tasty!

It’s a timeless experience as the lush, timbre-rich hills and the occasional house (shack) on the riverbank roll past, just as it was centuries ago.

For the More AdventurousAside from the classic attractions, there are a number of unique opportunities for adventurous travellers. The hilly areas are ideal for trekking while the Mekong offers an ideal place to kayak.

There are overnight stays, in tents, alongside the native hill tribes planting rice and

weaving baskets. Or, the Kuang Si waterfalls where locals and tourists can swim together.

Trips like these are not complete without a visit to the night market or all-you-can-eat street-side buffets for US $1.25 – a real steal.

unspoiled... For nowThe spiritual capital of Laos and its people doesn’t appear keen to change its traditional way of life. Perhaps, the local anecdote reflects that notion.

Laos is officially “Lao PDR” or “Lao People’s Democratic Republic”. But the people have humorously changed it to “Lao – Please Don’t Rush”!

So before Starbucks, McDonalds or flocks of tourists overwhelm it, rush to visit Luang Prabang before everyone else does and changes it. The clock is ticking.
