If you have not visited Sarang Korean Bistro before, you might easily miss it as it is tucked in a quiet corner

amidst the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road.

Located on the seventh floor of Orchard Central, its full-length glass windows give the place an airy feel, and offer a bird’s eye view of Orchard Road.

As I entered, what first caught my attention was how it gives the feel of dining close to nature. From the maple wooden floors, to the artificial greenery – temperate trees and a green wall – to the wooden benches and tables, it makes for a cosy gathering with friends or family, or to chill out after work.

Lava cakes – warm, gooey and decadent cakes that take you to heaven with one bite.

Our only gripe? They are usually meant for sharing and you can only have one flavour. So, when we came across Smoulder, which specialises in multi-flavoured molten chocolate cakes in bite sizes, we were sold.

Founder Peter Cai and his college mates were studying in London and, once in a while, they’d indulge in a lava cake in a café. They thought of a scenario where one could enjoy an entire box while lounging in pyjamas at home.

“We decided all cakes should taste like that. But due to the high exchange rate back then, we could only have it once in a blue moon. We joked about starting a business and, in 2009, we talked about it again and took three years to realise our dream,” says Peter.

They also customise the lava cakes according to the festive seasons such as for Halloween, red velvet lava cakes for National Day and even molten core mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

how its food is tweaked to cater to Singaporean taste buds while preserving traditional Korean elements.

One such dish is the Volcanic Chicken ($21), which features a fiery red dish of chicken marinated in the chef’s special spicy volcano sauce, served in a sizzling pan. The various shades of deep red and bright red should sound an alarm for those who can’t take spicy food, but it’ll be a delight for those who are accustomed to local favourites like chilli crab.

We started off with refreshing cucumber soda, and a nondescript dish of Folded Eggs ($6.50) – Korean-style egg omelette with green chilli, cheese and vegetables. The Sarang Japchae ($7), which is a classic Korean dish of vermicelli noodles tossed in sesame oil, tasted as good as it was visually appealing. The noodles were chewy and comfortingly warm, and had a sticky, bouncy texture.

The Kimchi Pancake ($8) made with aged kimchi and served with a light soy dipping sauce was yummy, spicy and delightfully crisp. It was so satisfying that I went for seconds, and thirds.

The classic tapas came with a variety of cocktail pairings –

Watermelon Soju, Yuzu Makgeolli, Soju Bomb and Makgeolli Sprite ($12 single, $19 double). The cocktails were refreshing after the meats and fried dishes, and the flavours reduced the alcohol taste.

I liked the Kiwi Soju, as well as the Lemon Soju and Yuzu Makgeolli, as they were subtle and not too overpowering. The modern tapas pairings were Makgeolli Mojito, Lemon Soju and red wine.

Inspired by the typically-French dish, the Ginseng Chicken Terrine ($16) consists of spring chicken, dates, ginseng, garlic and ginseng broth. Dipped in a lovely, savoury pine nut sauce, it was flavourful, like a mouthful of concentrated ginseng chicken. It left a strong aftertaste... The vegetables on the side were delicious too.

The mains were the Sarang Meat Lover’s Platter ($42), with an assortment of wine-marinated pork belly, rib eye steak, and honey yuzu chicken arranged artfully in a pan. I especially liked the steak with the house special kimchi sauce, and the scrumptious honey yuzu chicken.

The Spoon Pizza ($8.50) is perfect for the ladies, as it comes with very little dough and is full of ingredients such as bell peppers, onions, cheese and volcanic

chicken. The oven-baked pizza gratin is also convenient, as it can be eaten without using one’s hands – just scoop it up with a spoon.

We also tried the Big Bang Bulgogi Burger ($16), which are basically small buns with grilled, seasoned bulgogi beef, caramelised onion, lettuce and tomato and a side of fries with a cheesy dip. This departed from the usual Bibimbap, and the beef was just right – not too tough or overcooked.

My favourite was the Sarang Nachos ($9.50), which was as scrumptious as it looked even though it is traditionally Mexican fare. It came with generous yellow and brown drizzles of homemade bulgogi sauce, mayonnaise and marinated beef, adding texture to the otherwise crunchy dish.

The okonomiyaki-style Scallion Pancake ($8.50) gave a fascinating twist to the Japanese dish. It was filled with seafood and bacon, and then drizzled with teriyaki sauce and bonito flakes.

We had Hotteok ($8) for dessert: a sweet pancake filled with warm cinnamon sugar and served with vanilla and raspberry gelato, bringing a comforting, sweet end to the meal. W

Cesar Millan, the world-renowned dog behaviourist is combatting the global issue of canine abandonment and giving “unadoptable” dogs a second chance at life in his new series, Cesar Millan’s Leader of the Pack.

Following the wild success of his long-running series Dog Whisperer, Millan’s new show takes him to Spain where, each week, he transfers extreme canine cases to his new Dog Psychology Centre in Miraflores. In each episode, three candidates compete for the chance to adopt one special pup, with their dog skills put to the test in a series of special canine challenges.

Meanwhile, Millan employs his “exercise, discipline and affection” method to overcome hurdles with dogs that are particularly skittish or aggressive, to painstakingly rehabilitate each one and prepare them for adoption.

“Dog Whisperer had a passion, but Leader of the Pack has a mission,” says Millan.

“My goal with this show is to awaken the world to how many dogs are euthanized in one year, how we kill them and how the world really treats what we call man’s best friend,” he says.

its creators by becoming a cult classic and a rite-of-passage into the horror-movie experience for millions of fans.

thE nEW EVIl dEadThe new film is a bold reimagining of one of the most original and successful horror movies ever made. With Raimi, Tapert and Campbell producing, Evil Dead is on track to terrorise a new generation of filmgoers with a combination of 21st Century technology and classic hard-core horror elements.

“We had to shoot the first movie in 16mm. The sound was mono because we couldn’t afford stereo, let alone 5.1 surround sound. There were probably only 60 prints made, so it was released in very few theatres. It only showed in certain markets on the big screen because it was unrated. Even when it has been seen on a big screen, it was with compromised picture and sound,” says Raimi.

Campbell warns, “This is a full-on, strap-yourself-in sort of ride. It gets more and more outrageous as it goes. And kids: if you find a book in a cabin in the woods, just turn around and drive away.”

Raimi adds, “It’s the ultimate experience in gruelling terror. And I dare you to see it.”

The perception of femininity may seem to be skewed toward the stick-thin models spotted on avant-

Singaporean designer Islean Valath’s first line for Arc’s Spring/Summer 2012 debuted with rich colours and a streamlined form to create a leaner yet curvier silhouette, similar to Stella McCartney’s much-heralded “magic dress”.

“I have always been interested in architecture and the ideas that play with shape, form, composition; I'm especially fascinated by the juxtaposition between curves and linear shapes. I wanted to incorporate this into my clothes,” she says.

She adds, “I began thinking of how an arc is in fact a curved line and how that is suggestive of a woman’s body. I came to really feel

We’ve been told to death on the proper way to brush our teeth and prevent bad breath, since we were children in primary school. But how many of us bother to actually remember beyond merely brushing our teeth twice a day?

There is more to cleaning your teeth than giving it the old one-two brushstrokes every day. Dr Helena Lee, a Dental Specialist in Periodontics with Specialist Dental Group says, “Most people only brush their teeth but skip flossing. Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between teeth. Any leftover particles not picked up by a toothbrush in these difficult to access areas between teeth can cause decay and gum disease.”

Dr Lee adds, “Some also have a misconception that a hard toothbrush is best, when in actual fact it is too abrasive for the gums.”

Plaque is an accumulation of bacteria that is always present in the mouth, which can be kept at bay with frequent brushing and flossing. Dr Lee warns, “Bleeding gums (during brushing) is a sign of gum disease. Relook into your dental care and visit your dental specialist.”

that the word ‘arc' represents both my minimalist design aesthetic, whilst communicating the driving force behind my design objective – to make clothes that accentuate the woman's form.”

Her Autumn/Winter 2012 collection gleans inspirations from a post-apocalyptic world with futuristic silhouettes and monochromatic colours with hints of jewel tones – using materials such as Thai silk and wool toughened up with leather details.

The pieces may come across as over-the-top but Islean begs to differ. She says, “I recently came across a bunch of women who, upon seeing the clothes, got really excited and wanted to get their hands on the designs immediately. They were all US Size 6-12.”

“At the same time, I also met a slim ex-model who's now US Size 2, who was worried about pulling the pieces off. It's very interesting to observe – I can see it really is about self-worth and confidence.

Women whom do not live by what society thinks of them won’t fear the designs,” she adds.

Since Arc started up in 2012, Islean has had excellent responses from women in the market including Singapore-based Australian celebrity model and host Yvette King, budding singer Sarah Cheng de Winne, and media personality Sara Ann Krishnamoorthy. Arc’s outfits range from $80 to $358.

She says, “As a designer, I hope that people buy my clothes not merely because they want to support local… but they understand intrinsically the value of how much thought has been put into the creative process, and that they're paying for a very unique piece because we control and limit the total number of each design produced.”

Foundation also extols the benefits of regular dental check-ups, as most dental problems progress at a slow pace and they are usually asymptomatic. Thus, routine dental visits might help to pre-empt or treat existing conditions quickly.

Dr Lee, who has also worked on the Smile More Singapore campaign for Oral-B, also encourages using an appropriate-sized toothbrush for your mouth as “too big a brush means the back-most teeth are missed out and not cleaned properly”. She also suggests a softer-bristled toothbrush gentle enough for the gums and for cleaning teeth properly.

If you find flossing too much of a hassle, make it easier by investing in a floss-holder to reach all your teeth easily. People with braces should use the specially-shaped brushes for braces.

“Simply look into the mirror, work the brush both above and below the orthodontic brackets. Then, use inter-dental brushes to reach between the brackets,” says Dr Lee.

She also advises rinsing your mouth with water after drinking strong drinks such as tea, coffee

or wine to prevent extrinsic discolouration. The Singapore Dental Health Foundation also says that a greyish-coloured tooth might be a result of deeper problems such as a “dead tooth” or decay. Intrinsic discolouration can be treated with either a root canal, in the case of a dead tooth, or internal bleaching.

A growing wisdom tooth can be a pain in more than a physical sense, and it requires proper care. Dr Lee says, “Apart from brushing

well, use an antiseptic mouth rinse. More importantly, see a dental surgeon for X-rays, because a partially-impacted wisdom tooth should be removed before the infection becomes an emergency.”

Throughout the duration of your trip, you will get to stay in a deluxe hotel including at the Sapporo Grand Hotel, the Sounkaka Grand Hotel, and the Abashiri Grand Hotel (onsen hotel).

Hokkaido CuiSineOne of the best parts of the trip is the food, including highly-fresh seafood, Kaiseiki cuisine, and even an all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s no wonder travellers often feel strengthened and nourished after their stay in beautiful Hokkaido.

Enjoy yourself and be entertained at Five Star’s Gala Dinner, to be held at the Toya Sun Palace Hotel, or a hotel of a similar quality.

Before you leave, you will also get to experience the Hakodate Morning Market, which will truly be a feast for your senses. The hustle and bustle and wares for sale are nothing quite like what you will experience in Singapore.

The 9-Day I Love Hokkaido tour sets off on Jun 22. Check with Five Stars Tours for other departure dates and packages suitable for you.
