Think ahead What does the title of the poem make you think of?

The following poem was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls; Along the sea-sands damp and brown The traveller hastens to the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

Darkness settles on roofs and walls; But the sea, the sea in darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft white hands, Efface the footprints on the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls

Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveller to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

Thinking back

Choose the best ending to complete each sentence.

1 The curlew calls a) at twilight

2 The sea-sands were c) damp and brown

3 The traveller was travelling to b) the town

4 Darkness settles c) on roofs and walls

5 The poet says the waves have

a) soft white hands

Thinking about it

1 Explain what time of day twilight is. – I think twilight is the time of day where the sun is setting. I think this because the poet states that darkens is settling on the roofs.

2 What do you think a curlew is? – I think a curlew is a type of bird. I think this because the poet states that the curlew called.

3 How can you tell the traveller is in a hurry to get to town? – I can tell that the traveller is in a hurry to get to town because the poet uses the word hastens which means to be quick.

4 Why do you think the traveller is going to town? – I think that the traveller is going to town to stay the night. As the traveller is riding the daylight is ending and night time

Page 11:  · Web viewWrite whether each would followed by a singular or a plural verb. 1 the sandals – Plural Verb 2 the spoonful – Singular Verb 3 each boy – Singular Verb 4 eggs and

is setting in and they therefore need to find somewhere to stay for the night.

5 What do you think `the waves efface the footprints on the sand' means? - I think this sentence means that the waves are getting rid of the footprints on the beach. 6 What other name is used for horses in the poem? – Another name used for horses in the poem is steeds.

7 What do you think a 'hostler' is? – I think a hostler is someone who looks after horses. I think this because the horses are reacting to their calls in the stalls.

Thinking it through

1 What time of day is each verse about? What do you notice? – The first paragraph is about twilight, the second is about night time and the third is about morning. I know

Page 12:  · Web viewWrite whether each would followed by a singular or a plural verb. 1 the sandals – Plural Verb 2 the spoonful – Singular Verb 3 each boy – Singular Verb 4 eggs and

this because the poet tells us this In the first line of each paragraph.

2 How can you tell the poem was written some time ago? – I can tell the poem was written a long time ago because the traveller is riding a horse.

3 Why do you think the poet keeps repeating the line `The tide rises, the tide falls'? – I think that the poet keeps repeating the line ‘the tide rises, and the tide falls’ because it shows that although time is moving forward, the sea continues to do the same thing.

4 What does the poet mean when he says that the waves have `soft white hands'? – When the poet says that the waves have ‘soft white hands’ I think the poet means that because when waves break, and appear white, they gently run up the beach like hands.
