Feast of All Saints
Tuesday 1 November
On November 1st we celebrated the Feast of All Saints. The
feast of all Saints isn’t about those who are publically named
saints – like Saint Teresa of Calcutta because each one of those
has their own feast day. Instead we think about many good
ordinary people who walked with God in their daily lives and
who are now dead. This is their feast day- all the unmentioned
saints who now live in God’s presence in the Kingdom of
Heaven.
To celebrate the feast day we had two masses in school and
four year groups were able to be part of the masses. The
masses were celebrated by Fathers Dennis Cassidy and Andrew
Summersgill and we are grateful that they were able to support
us, by saying mass in school, on a feast day when they also said
at least two other masses. We are also grateful to Father
McCreadie for inviting us to take year 7 down to the Parish Mass
in St Anne’s.
Holy Family students and staff ensured that we remembered all
the unmentioned saints in the traditional way as a community of
prayer .
Lancaster Castle
Wednesday, 9 November
Due to the bad weather this trip was rescheduled for Thursday 9 December.
As part of the A level Sociology course, students are required to study
aspects of Criminology and Criminal Justice, including the judicial system
in England and Wales.
Lancaster Castle was used as a Category C prison until as recently as
March 2011 and is still a working Crown Court. Students got to experience
life as an inmate, learn about the about the British Justice System, the role
of the judiciary, a history of criminal sentencing and the gruesome history of
capital punishment.

The Beats of the Bard
Thursday, 10 November
A group of year 7 students walked to Keighley Library in pursuit of
learning about Shakespeare’s works. They encountered a very
entertaining and interactive session, where they learned about
the ‘beat’ the Bard employs in his writing: iambic pentameter.
The students were encouraged to clap and gallop to the rhythm
of the words in order to recognise the carefully crafted rhythm.
After this, a whirlwind introduction to Romeo and Juliet and A
Midsummer Night’s Dream began, where Holy Family students
took on roles, dressed in wigs and were squirted with a water
pistol, all in the name of learning! Everyone agreed that the
afternoon was ‘good fun’ and they would love to go again.
Student Exchange
Saturday, 12 November
As a school, we have many links with other schools across the world.
One of our most established links is with the Pondok Pesantren,
Darunnajah which is an Islamic boarding school in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The first link was established in 2006 by Tony Blair, former Prime Minister.
The Holy Family Catholic School was invited at that time to be the first
school in the UK to be formally linked with a school in Indonesia.
Since then, we have had an annual exchange of two teachers from both
countries. We have extended this in recent years by including students.
Thank you to all our parents and students who kindly hosted our visitors.
Remembrance Day
Friday, 11 November
Staff and Students planted poppies at the
front of school.

Peter Rosengard
Tuesday, 15 November
Peter Rosengard visited the school to gave an aspirational talk to Years 11,12 and 13. He spoke at length about his career as a life-insurance salesman and how he got into the Guinness Book of World Records for selling the world’s first $100 million life insurance policy.
Later he started a career in pop managing a band called ‘Curiosity Killed The Cat’ which were in the Top Ten in the 1980s. His mantra was ‘whenever life gets you down, keep on putting one foot in front of the other and keep walking forward.’

Operation Christmas Child
Thursday, 24 November
Staff and Students collected shoeboxes and filled them with gifts to give to children somewhere in the world.
The boxes were collected and will be taken to Meltham where the contents are checked for customs purposes. From there they will be packed into large outer carton and loaded onto lorries or containers to go abroad. There are around 100 lorries that will hold 10,000 shoeboxes.
Well done to Mrs Coppen and Miss Bennett for organising
this great cause and to everyone who kindly donated.
The Celebration of Achievement Evening
Thursday, 1 December
Parents and students were invited to our Celebration of Achievement
Evening.
Students were presented with Key Stage 4 awards and also their exam
certificates.

The school choir performed Christmas Carols and there were
refreshments. Students had time to catch up with one another and of
course with members of staff.
A special thanks goes to Mrs Kit who works very hard to make the
evening run smoothly.

special thanks to Mrs Myers for all her hard work.
OLV Christmas Fair Sunday, 11 December
Holy Family DSP students helped out at the Our Lady Of Victories Primary school (OLV) Christmas Fair on Sunday 11th December. Students made gifts to sell at the fair and then sold them on the day. We raised money for both OLV and our DSP and practised many life skills at the same time. Our DSP students helped out at the Keighley Catholic Centre Afternoon Tea for the elderly. Students and staff made the table centre pieces for the event and then helped to set up, greet and serve customers and tell them a few jokes while they enjoyed the festivities. There was a great community atmosphere and the students were excellent ambassadors for the school.
