PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
FAREWELL MR O’DEA
It is with mixed emotions that I announce that Mr
Mick O’Dea has retired from teaching after a long
and rewarding career of 38 years in Public
Education. He started teaching in February 1979 at
Adelong Public School and in May 1986 joined the
staff of Wagga Wagga Public School where he has
remained for the past 31 years.
Mr O’Dea has been a well-respected and
passionate teacher who has inspired and nurtured
hundreds of students throughout their primary
schooling. He will be remembered for the activities
that his students were offered including
photography, astronomy, wood-working, tie-dying
and who can forget juggling. The students and staff at our school are fortunate to have had Mr O’Dea share his skills and talents with them and the memories he has created will long be talked about.
On behalf of the whole Wagga Wagga Public School community—past and present, I
wish Mick a long and happy retirement and thank him for his dedicated service to our
school and to Public Education. We will miss him.
Last Thursday, Ruby organised
a lunchtime disco to raise
funds for The Children’s
Starlight Foundation. With the
help of her parents—Nat and
Andrew and fellow captain
Ethan, Ruby hosted a fantastic
event which was thoroughly
enjoyed by our students.
Ruby raised $1010 for this
charity and should be so
proud of her self.
Ruby would like to
thank everyone
who supported this
event and to
everyone for their
generosity.

Mindfulness in the Classroom
We know that to really make a
positive impact on children’s mental
health, we need to provide them
with skills that can be used
throughout their lives. If we tune in
to our body and our mind through
mindfulness and meditation, we can
improve our learning. The Smiling
Mind Education Programs are
mapped to the curriculum and
designed to support educators to
bring mindfulness into the classroom.
The Smiling Mind Education Program
offers mental health and wellbeing
tools designed for primary and
secondary aged children. It has been
successfully implemented in a wide
variety of government and non-
government schools with positive
results in classes of all sizes,
backgrounds, locations and ages.
The Smiling Mind Education Program
has been proven to help students
with sleep, wellbeing, managing
emotions, concentration and school
behaviour including reductions in
bullying. The program also assists
with:
stress management,
increased resilience,
increased creativity,
better decision making, and
a sense of calm, clarity and
contentment.
Research has shown that involving
the whole community – teachers,
parents and students – is the most
effective way to gain the long-lasting
benefits of mindfulness.
NAPLAN
Our students in Years 3 and 5 began NAPLAN today. They completed Language Conventions
and Writing today and will complete Reading tomorrow and Numeracy on Thursday. Good
luck to all our students. Keep NAPLAN in perspective. It's just a snapshot in time. The truest
measure of your ability is in doing your best.
CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to everyone who participated in our annual Cross Country last Friday. The
weather was beautiful and once again our students showed their determination in
completing the run. Thanks to the staff and parents who assisted on the day and to Mr
Burgess and Mrs Thorpe for organising this event.
BOOK FAIR
Last week we held another successful Book Fair at the School. We sold $4680 worth of books
and stationary and earned just over $900 in commission for our school library. This is a
fantastic effort. Thank you to everyone who supported the Book Fair and to Mrs Allen for all
your hard work in organising this event.
PARENT PAYMENTS
Due to the upcoming LMBR launch at Wagga Wagga Public School we will not be accepting
parent payments online or through the office for the two weeks starting Saturday, 13th
May to Monday, 29th May.
OFFICE CLOSED
With the launch of our new administration and finance systems fast approaching, please
note that our school office will be closed on Monday, 22nd May for LMBR Go Live day. It
will resume operation on Tuesday, 23rd May.
Have a great week. Leanne
