PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED...
Mindfulness in the Classroom
We know that to really make a positive impact on children’s mental health, we need to provide them with skills that can be used throughout their lives. If we tune in to our body and our mind through mindfulness and meditation, we can improve our learning. The Smiling Mind Education Programs are mapped to the curriculum and designed to support educators to bring mindfulness into the classroom.
The Smiling Mind Education Program offers mental health and wellbeing tools designed for primary and secondary aged children. It has been successfully implemented in a wide variety of government and non-government schools with positive results in classes of all sizes, backgrounds, locations and ages. The Smiling Mind Education Program has
been proven to help students with sleep,
wellbeing, managing emotions,
concentration and school behaviour
including reductions in bullying. The
program also assists with:
stress management,
increased resilience,
increased creativity,
better decision making, and
a sense of calm, clarity and
contentment.
Research has shown that involving the
whole community – teachers, parents and
students – is the most effective way to gain
the long-lasting benefits of mindfulness. At
WWPS, we will be using the Smiling Mind
program to enrich the learning and
wellbeing programs we already offer. This
highly effective program will support us in
building our culture of caring,
compassionate, and mature students, and
provide us with the further skills and
resources needed for an optimal learning
environment. To find out more or to
try some mindfulness for yourself, go
to: Smiling Mind.com.au or install the
Smiling Mind app. Have a great week.

In Week 3 (5th to 9th August) NSW Public School’s celebrate Education Week.
The theme for Education Week 2019 is ‘Every Student, Every Voice.’
Education Week will give everyone a great opportunity to visit our school to
talk with our teachers, to look at great learning in practice and celebrate all
there is about public education.
Please join us on Thursday 8th August at the Wagga Marketplace at 11.00am
to enjoy the talents of our performance groups. They will perform outside Big
W. Seating and standing spaces are limited so it is worth getting there a little
early.
On Friday 9th August we will be holding our school Open Day. Details are being
finalised and we will let you know next week.
ADVANCE NOTICE
Our 2019 Book Character Parade will be on Friday 23rd August. We invite all
children to come dressed as their favourite book character or superhero.
If every Australian did one act of kindness
a day for the month of July, that would
be 775 million acts of kindness in Kind
July.
It’s not too late, pledge your kindness
today.

Many of our students are doing
some amazingly kind things for
Kind July and next week each
class will be embarking on a
combined challenge.
Who will turn out to be the
kindest class at WWPS?

QUALITY TEACHING ROUNDS AT WWPS
CHANGE OF DATE
Quality Teaching Rounds at Wagga Wagga Public School
Wagga Wagga Public School is lucky enough to be one of 200 schools participating in a research project be-ing led by Professor Jenny Gore from the University of Newcastle. It’s called ‘Building Capacity for Quality Teaching in Australian Schools’. The study focuses on teachers and teaching. All Year 3/4 teachers are very excited to be beginning this project and implementing Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) at our school. Miss Amanda O’Connell and myself recently travelled to Newcastle to take part in two days of professional learn-ing as part of this research.
What are Quality Teaching Rounds?
Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) is an approach to teacher professional development that involves teachers working in groups of four or more (known as Professional Learning Communities) to observe and analyse each other’s teaching using a framework we call the Quality Teaching model. Results so far are inspiring. Re-search has found QTR build significant improvements in the quality of teaching and has positive impacts on teacher morale and school culture, with encouragement and recognition of teachers' good work.
What will QTR look like at WWPS?
Starting this week, Mrs Elsley, Miss O’Connell, Miss Pokoney and Miss Lipinski will begin their first QTR. This will involve us being off class every Wednesday for 4 weeks (Weeks 1 - 4). We are hoping as the year pro-gresses, to roll out this professional learning model in other Stages of our school.
A typical teaching round
QTR involves four or more teachers working together to observe and analyse lessons in each other’s class-room. As teachers observe and discuss teaching in a non-confrontational environment, they become more aware of their strengths and what they can improve to help their students learn. Each week, we will be vis-iting each other’s classrooms and observing teaching.
Over one day teachers will:
discuss teaching based on a reading proposed by one of the group
sit in on a lesson taught by one member of the group to observe and analyse the quality of teaching
independently ‘code’ the lesson in line with the Quality Teaching model
re-group to discuss the lesson, and teaching in general.
The NSW Department of Education strongly endorses participation in Quality Teaching Rounds as an ap-proach to teacher professional learning with a rigorous evidence base. We are looking forward to imple-menting this model in our school with the core aim being to develop teacher capacity to provide for im-proved teacher outcomes.
