The meeting was held at Doi-Suthep Room, Kantary Hills, Chiangmai and chaired by Ms Wilawan Sapphansaen. A Welcome Address was delivered by Ms.kanok-on Sakdadate, Acting Director, National Library of Thailand .Delegates from all CONSAL member countries were present. BLA was represented by Puan Nellie Sunny, BLA President and Dyg Nooralizah Mohamad, Assistant Secretary BLA. The meeting was hosted by the National Library of Thailand and the Thai Library Association. Among the items discussed were preparation for the upcoming CONSAL XVI Conference on 10-13 June 2015 at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Cente, ang-Na, Bangkok. Brunei Darussalam reported on its two regional publication projects on Bibliography on Traditional Cultures and Leading women of CONSAL member countries. They are due to be launched at CONSAL XVI.

Welcome Dinner

All delegates were invited to a Welcome Dinner and cultural performance on 8 May 2014 was hosted by Mr Anek Sihamat, Director General of the Fine Arts Department, Ministry of Culture. It was held at the Doi-Suthep Room.

Library Visits By Dyg Nurul Fajrina Kamaluddin

Ratchamangkhalaphisek National Library of Chiang Mai

On Wednesday, 7 May 2014 the EB delegates arrived

at the Ratchamangkhalaphisek National Library of

Chiang Mai Branch and were welcomed by Ms Tatsana

Chambers, Chief Librarian. After lunch we toured the

library firstly to the Periodical and Newspaper section

on the first floor, where the library collection consist of

braille books, newspaper clipping, pamphlets etc.,

General book section and we went to the National

Archive where they stored copies of local publications.

On the second floor, we witnessed the Lana transcript

manuscript written on a palm trees. The library currently

has a collection of about 3,000 palm leaf manuscripts.

The inscriptions were about the history of northern

Thai-Lanna Buddhism, Astrology, Astronomy and

Medicine. Then we saw an exhibition on Northern Art and Cultural Collections.

Go to page 4 Chiang Mai University Library On the 8 May 2014, the EB members visited the Chiang Mai University Library which is a public research university in northern Thailand founded in January 1964, by a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

CMU, or Mor Chor as it is known locally, was the first institute of higher education in the north, and the first provincial

university in Thailand. Since its opening in 1964, with the three founding Faculties of Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities, today, CMU has seventeen Faculties with 107 individual departments, and a Graduate School offering a total of 253 programs: 3 Certificate Programs, 87 undergraduate programs and 163 postgraduate and graduate diploma programs, to more than twenty-five thousand students. There are three campuses, which together cover about 3,490 acres of land. The main University campus, Suan Sak campus, lies about 5 kilometres west of the city center.

Cultural visits By Dyg Nur Nadzirah Zainul’Ariffin

The organizers arranged visits to the Ram Borsang Umbrella Factory on 7 May 2014, the Maesa Elephant Camp and Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens on 9 May 2014 and Bantawai Handicraft Village on 10 May 2014. Maesa Elephant Camp is a privately owned elephant

camp less than one hour from Chiang Mai. It is

located in an idyllic forested setting with a waterfall

welcoming you as you enter. Having been open for

nearly thirty years and the camp currently has 73

elephants and approximately 80 mahouts. The

elephants are fed in the camp and a vet is provided.

The elephants return to the mahouts each night. Go

During our visit were saw how the elephants were bathed, fed and then we saw the elephants danced, painted, lifted logs and played balloon archery, football and volleyball to the amusements of the visitors. The elephant paintings will be sold at THB1500.

Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens was established in 1993 by Botanical Garden Organization (BGO) under the Ministry of the Natural Resources and Environment. The garden is situated at the foothills of Doi Suthep-Pui, Mae Rim, Chiang Mai Province, covering an area of about 1,000 hectares.

The The main objectives of the garden are to serve as a center of Thai flora for botanical study and research, to render services concerning biodiversity and environmental conservation, as well as to provide a beautiful places to the public. Go to page 6

In 1994, the BGO received a great honor from H.M.Queen Sirikit to grant a royal permission to name the garden after Her Majesty’s name “Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden”

During a visit over there I had the opportunity to know some of the cactus, orchid, fern and others. I'm very excited about this trip as a chance to get to know different types of plants and flowers that I never see.

Ram Borsang Umbrella Factory in the village of Borsang makes bamboo umbrellas. Each of the umbrellas is hand crafted and hand painted. They make all sizes of umbrellas and ship all over the world.

ADVANCING AND MONITORING WOMEN’S POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN THE ASEAN REGION

A Planning Workshop was held on 27 February 2014 in Phnom Penh led by the International Consultant and attended by the National Consultants from AMS. Each National Consultant was to produce a Country Research Paper to be discussed in April workshop As a follow-up a Workshop among the National Consultants and the International Consultant and ASEAN Committee on Women Focal Points to review Country Research Papers was held in Siem Reap, Cambodia from 29-30 April 2014.Representatives from UN Women were in attendance. Pn Nellie was present as a National Consultant. The ASEAN project is led by Cambodia where each ASEAN member state (AMS) conducts a country study by a national consultant to produce a structured and jointly agreed framework to review and assess the actual situation in each AMS and to generate baseline data and information for women’s political participation and voice at national and sub-national levels. The findings are expected to provide a proposal for an ASEAN monitoring framework ..
