CELEBRATING BLA 32 nd ANNIVERSARY

A Thanksgiving and evening Mass Prayers was held on evening of 15 March 2018 to mark

Brunei Darussalam Library Association’s 32 nd anniversary. Some sixty members attended

comprising BLA EXCO members, BLA members, friends and the local community. It was held

at the Pengiran Muda Abdul Malik Mosque in Kg Tungku.

A reception was held after the prayers.

BLA was registered on 11 March 1986 and was formed upon the return of a group of young

professional librarians from overseas studies and in response to a growing sense of national

identity. BLA is a grouping to unite and network with all those in the information industry

including librarians, information officers, and those in ICT and related sectors. Go to page 7

TALK ON HIBAH, WASIAT & PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

BLA members attended the talk on 24 March 2018 organised by the Women’s Business Council-Brunei Darussalam.

Estate planning is key to managing the family wealth. The two main instruments of wasiat and hibah and their importance in relation to hukum faraid. Wasiat is the creation of the Islamic will, which relays the messages and intentions of an individual upon her death. On the other hand, hibah enables a person to confer gifts to another, during her lifetime.

DATES EVENTS

1969 A Conference on Southeast Asian Research Materials was held at Puntjak, near Jakarta, Indonesia, attended by eminent scholars, archivists and librarians.

It was at this conference that the idea of forming a regional organisation for Southeast Asian Nations was conceived. The founders of CONSAL were librarians from five Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, who had attended the conference.

2000 The CONSAL Executive Board agreed on the establishment of a Secretariat with a primary role of co‐ordinating CONSAL‐approved projects. Rasu Ramachandran, Director of the National Library in Singapore, was appointed as the first Secretary General of CONSAL

24 April 2001 The website was transferred to the CONSAL Secretariat hosted by the National Library Board, Singapore, which has developed the website into a learning and networking portal for librarians in the region. The new CONSAL Web was launched on 24 April 2001 by David Lim, the then Minister of State for Defence and Information and the Arts, at Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore.

BRUNEI’S FIRST FEMALE CAPTAIN HONOURED

Royal Brunei Airlines’ (RB) Captain Sharifah Czarena Suriany binti

Syed Hashim was honoured as a 2018 inductee to the International

Forest of Friendship. She is the first female captain on any flag

carrier in Southeast Asia.

The announcement was made on 20 March 2018 at a ceremony at

the Sejahtera Hall of the Royal Brunei Recreation Club where Co-

Chairman of the International Forest of Friendship, Dr Linton Wells

II presented the certificate.

The International Forest of Friendship in its statement said that it will also recognise Royal Brunei

Airlines for having the first female captain in any flag carrier in Southeast Asia and for the all-female

aircrew that Captain Czarena led to Jeddah on Brunei Darussalam’s National Day in 2016.

Captain Czarena will be inducted during an annual ceremony to be held in Atchinson, Kansas, the

United States in September.

Captain Czarena started flying in 2004 where RB seconded her to Logan Air in Scotland for 18 months

and she came back in 2006 to fly RB’s Boeing 767. Her career progressed quickly becoming a senior

first officer in 2007. In 2012, she flew the Boeing 777 where she got command as a captain.

Although Czarena is the third local female pilot, she is the first local female captain.

The International Forest of Friendship is an arboretum and memorial forest beside Lake Warnock in

Atchison, Kansas. It is a memorial to the men and women involved in aviation and space exploration.

The forest was started in 1976 by the city of Atchison and the Ninety-Nines, an international organisation

of women pilots. The forest contains trees representing all 50 American states and the 35 countries

Membakut Sabah. The award ceremony held from 9-11 March 2018 was officiated by Malaysian

RSC DONATION DRIVE

The Resource Centre Club of the IBTE Agro-Technology

Campus welcomed the New Year 2018 with full of energy and

high spirit from all members. As for our first activity of the New

Year we agreed on to carry out a donation drive and a

cleaning campaign

The main aim of this activity was to give help and support the

needy. Dy Hajah Noralam, a 63 years old lady in need of

financial support was the recipient. We came to know of her

from the news. Her home has been in a state of disarray with

no working toilet and electricity. She had to walk to the nearby

public toilet which approximately 1km from her home.

Financial aid is the only hope to salvage what is left. She

continued her living in rural style in order to support herself

and her son.

This made the RSC Club to stand up and made an effort to

help the old lady through donation and charity work to clean

her house and compound. A meeting was conducted to

gather information and ideas before the actual activities were carried out. The task and responsibilities

of each group members were discussed.

On Wednesday, 31 January 2018 marked the day of our activity. Before we left, we held a mass Zohor

prayer among the club members. We were met by Dy Hajah Noralam and her family. The donations

from all members, which included household items and dried food were then handed over by the group

leader Dy Roziah Binti Hj Ali.

At the end of the activities, a group photo was taken followed by the recital of prayers to bless the

activity. In return, Dy Hajah Noralam thanked the RSC club for their generous contributions and support.

The joy and excitement were clearly seen on each member’s face on the success of the mission.

such as self-discipline, teamwork and

awareness were achieved. More

activities will be planned in the future to

serve the community.

PROFESSIONAL LADIES GOLF TOURNAMENT 2018

Ladies from South Korea and China were in Brunei Darussalam to compete with Bruneian ladies in the ‘Brunei Ladies Open ’ at the Empire Hotel & Country Club from 17-19 March 2018. BLA President was a member of the Coordinating Committee. The Brunei Darussalam Golf Association is proud that both Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association and the China Ladies Professional Golf Association have selected Brunei as the host country of the prestigious tournament. Gracing the prize presentation ceremony of the three-day competition was Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah who presented Ms Ram Hong of South Korea, the winner’s trophy and prize money of $140,000,000 Korean Won. Hong’s nearest rival and compatriot, Choi Ka Ram was five shots behind finishing 13-under par 200. The three-day tournament was on live broadcast.

26 Feb 2018 A Swiss Ocean vessel Fleur de Passion was in Brunei for a mapping expedition . The four- year journey, following the route taken 500 years ago on the first circumnavigation of the globe by Ferdinand Magellan, is making a seven-day stop in Brunei waters. Carrying three crew members, including Captain Pietro Godenzi, in addition to five volunteers and passengers, the ocean-mapping expedition recently set sail from Palawan in the Philippines to Brunei Darussalam. The expedition is on-going since 2015, where they sailed from Seville to Brazil, and then Chile, then proceeded to cross the Pacific Ocean in 2016-17. They were in Papua New Guinea in 2017, then in Indonesia, then to the Philippines. They had completed two-thirds of their journey, and are heading back.

The final of the 58 th National Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults was held for three consecutive nights at the International Convention Centre under the theme of ‘Al-Quran: the Source of Fair Leadership’. Awang Haji Muhd Fikri bin Haji Awang Metussin was announced as the Champion Qari of this year's National Musabaqah Al-Quran for Adults. Aged 32, Awang Haji Muhd Fikri bin Haji Awang Metussin represented the country at several International Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran such as in the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2015, and in Sumatra, Indonesia in 2014. Meanwhile, champion qariah was Dayang Hajah Nurfaezah binti Haji Emran. Aged 34, Dayang Hajah Nurfaezah binti Haji Emran brought fame to the country when she placed second at the International Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2010.

7 Mar 2018 The implementation of Integrated National Education Information System, iNEIS and Mobile Attendance Application will improve the Ministry of Education's operational visibility, efficiency and productivity and provide better services to schools and Ministry stakeholders. The purpose of the implementation of iNEIS is to streamline and transform the Ministry of Education business processes to support its current needs to implement, monitor and measure SPN 21 as well as improving its operational functions. As of 5th January 2015, iNEIS achieved Go-Live status for 161 primary and secondary schools under the Ministry of Education across all districts.

8 Mar 2018 A total of 70 female riders from Asian countries including Brunei Darussalam recently joined the Asian Women’s Force Ride 2018 motorcycle convoy in conjunction with the spirit of the Women Empowerment 2018 and World Women’s Day. Representing Brunei Darussalam were motorcyclists, Karmini binti Mattamin, the representative of the Darussalam Motorcycle Association (PEMODA) and Serinorhaty binti Haji Lamat, Ladies of Harley (LoH) representative, Harley Owners Group Brunei (HOGB) Chapter.The three-day event began in Kuala Lumpur, heading for Kedah and Perak before returning to Kuala Lumpur.

13 Mar 2018 The Brunei Fuzhou Shiyyi Association held its Fifth Anniversary and Third Executive Committee Inauguration Ceremony. The event took place at the Chung Hwa Middle School in Bandar Seri Begawan. The Brunei Fuzhou Shiyyi Association was established on the 1st of August 2012, and has since gathered more than 400 members.

17 Mar 2018 His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Deputy Sultan in his capacity as the Chairman of Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam’s (AMBD) Board of Directors graced the foundation laying ceremony of the AMBD Building. Located on a 16-acre land at Jalan Menteri Besar, Kampong Melabau, Mukim Kianggeh, the 22,000-square-metre building complex will be built with Syariah-compliant Sukuk fund. The AMBD Building project will include the construction of the main building, the currency gallery and a multi-purpose hall.

Proposed by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the first Asean-Australia Biennial Summit in Laos in 2016, the event included a leaders’ summit and retreat, a business summit, and a counter-terrorism conference. At the conclusion of the Retreat Session,the ASEAN and Australia leaders adopted the ‘Joint Statementof the ASEAN – Australia Special Summit: The Sydney Declaration’.

21 Mar 2018 PLUS-EXP, an online platform that provides work experience opportunities powered by Grominda Group, officially launched its website at the Design and is to provide people in Brunei with an online platform for work experience through internship, and participated in the first batch of the 100-Days Startup Bootcamp organised by DARe.
