RESOURCE DESCRIPTION ACCESS WORKSHOP ON ORGANIZING MULTIMEDIA AND ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

By Aw. Muhammad Hafizuddin Bin Abu Hasrah

Librarian (Head of Bibliographic Services Division, Universiti Brunei Darussalam

A Workshop on Resource Description and Access or commonly known as RDA in the world of Information science, was conducted at UBD Library from 14-17 August 2017. This workshop was facilitated by Associate Professor Hamidah A. Rahman, from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). The RDA workshop is the second time of its kind conducted by UBD Library, only that this time the workshop focuses solely on cataloguing multimedia and electronic

resources. Participants were from Universiti Brunei

Darussalam Librarians, Pusat Sejarah, Jabatan Sekolah-Sekolah, Jabatan Muzium- Muzium, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Institute Technical Brunei education, Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan, Politeknik Brunei, Attorneys General Chamber, MINDEF and Sekolah Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. The workshop provides background information on the historical development and conceptual model (FRBR), and the new structure of RDA as the 21st century cataloguing standard. It also focuses on how to build description of resources using RDA (Resource Description and Access) core elements and to express relationships between works, expressions, manifestations and items (WEMI) in between resources and persons, families and corporate bodies using RDA vocabularies using the RDA Toolkit. Furthermore Associate Professor Hamidah covered elaborately on the details about RDA overview (what, why, when and how);

the structure and contents of RDA; the relationship between FRBR, FRAD and RDA;

the RDA implementations in libraries;

the multimedia and electronic resources in libraries;

the differences between AACR2 and RDA (general differences, differences in description, differences in Access Points);

a few examples of RDA Catalogue Records, the relationship between MARC 21 and RDA;

how to use RDA Toolkit;

Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and Functional Requirements for Authority Records (FRAD); RDA Authority Records; FRBR and FRAD Structure;

Understanding entities and attributes using MARC tags 336, 337 and 338, which describes the content, media and carrier types on different types of resources, which includes monographs & cartographic, audio, video, electronic, 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and serials resources; and understanding relationship designators and authority.Go to page 7

From page 6 Overall the workshop was very beneficial and successful. It helps participants to understand more on what cataloguing actually is and how it plays an important role in libraries, especially with the implementation of RDA. RDA made the cataloguers’ work more efficient in upgrading the style of cataloguing by doing: elaborating abbreviations; no more short- form which is basically doing ‘Take What You See’. All participants are now more confident to do original cataloguing especially when cataloguing library materials that is related to multimedia and electronic resources. It is suggested that, all libraries in Brunei to start using the new standards and procedure in recording their resources. It is time for Brunei to set up its very own National committee in the implementation of RDA and devise policy in the use of RDA. With having these committee, it can be a reference for all librarian and those working in the libraries, information Centre and documentation centers.

THE dBookMarket, a used book flea market on Sunday had a good turnout as it brought like-minded people together to talk about books and their reading interests. Jointly organised by dBookHaus and SCR Xpress Citis Square, the Sunday’s round of dBookMarket also brought two charity organisations that sold books to raise funds, namely the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei and Books Back Again. The event provided an avenue for people to sell old books they no longer needed and for buyers to find good titles at much cheaper prices. From page 7 “We are thankful to organisers for their continuous support and the assistance they have provided for SMARTER Brunei. We hope that this collaboration will continue in the future,” she said. A teacher from Anthony Abell College, Tania Jo Murphy, who manages Books Back Again, noted that they sold donated books to raise money for the special students at Anthony Abell College in Seria. The proceeds go to creating a better education through the purchase of materials, resources and equipment for the students. She added that the event gave great opportunities for everyone to get books and a good opportunity to chat about books. Another participant, Dr Aammton Alias, said it was his first time participating and that it was a good experience to get his own children involved in the idea of selling books and to appreciate books as both vessels of knowledge and a valued commodity. At the end of the day, we had gained a better perspective and insight of librarianship in some of the major libraries in Brunei Darussalam. Hence, it
