Wachovia Recognizes Lesco for ‘Outstanding Hurricane Preparation and Recovery’

Wachovia Bank has recognized Lesco with an award for outstanding service. The honor was

presented on November 1 by Bill Augerot of Wachovia Bank to Scott Smith of Lesco on behalf of all Lesco employees.

“We wanted to recognize Lesco for the role they played in getting our banks up and running after the recent hurricanes,” said Augerot. “In many cases, Wachovia locations were the first and only businesses back in operation in an entire area. We wanted to demonstrate our thanks for helping us deliver for our customers when it is most important.”

Lesco dispatched more than 20 teams to Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Florida to help those who were impacted by the storms. Teams have stayed on site for the duration.

“We provided pre-storm preparation to protect buildings,” detailed Smith, “and then mobilized to assess and photo document damage to help

Pascagoula Gets Soaked

Lesco has been hard at work in Pascagoula Mississippi, putting a bank location back in

business after Katrina flooded the building with 18 inches of water. All damaged materials were removed, and Lesco came in to rebuild the branch and get it back in business and serving customers. Facilities maintenance customers rely on Lesco for construction services they can trust, including renovations and restorations. Consider the daily stress of hundreds of moving cars, it only makes sense that parking garages

require special attention. A busy Columbia, South Carolina parking deck is currently getting the attention of a skilled Lesco crew.

The concrete deck serves Baptist Memorial Hospital in downtown Columbia. According to Don Ford, Lesco senior project

manager, the project includes removing adjacent

flanges of specific double-tee flanges in the structure, and replacing them with a cast-in-place deck to relieve movement caused by vehicles.

Due to the heavy traffic of a busy hospital, Lesco must accomplish the work in phases without blocking access at any time. Work is being phased in on three separate decks simultaneously, and will progress from top to bottom, with completion scheduled for late fall.

Lesco has a long resume of projects on parking garages, including structural and cosmetic work.

customer – Coca Cola Consolidated, based in Charlotte. Lesco now provides mobile maintenance, help desk, and construction services to some 30 client locations throughout the Southeast.

Coca Cola Consolidated is one of the nation’s largest bottlers and distributors of Coca Cola products. The locations are primarily commercial warehouse and distribution centers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

“Lesco provides us a single source of responsibility for maintenance,” said Adam Hagner, facilities project manager for Coca Cola Consolidated. “Perhaps most important is Lesco’s system for tracking the work. We

Lesco Earns Orlando Hotel ContractThe Paramount Hotel Group has

awarded a contract to Lesco for extensive facade restorations to its new hotel in Maitland, Florida, said Don Ford, Lesco senior project manager. Paramount recently purchased the property, formerly the Orlando Sheraton Hotel.

The 20-year-old facility has two buildings, a connecting atrium, restaurant, and lounge. The award of this contract was predicated

on work Lesco accomplished for Paramount last year.

Work will include cleaning of the entire facility and installation of EIFS on the first two floors with an EIFS cornice around the top. Building exteriors exposed to the Florida climate take a beating, but with Lesco’s craftsmanship and warranty program, this Paramount hotel should be in great shape for another 10 to 15 years.

Lesco tech Steve Barker left Atlanta to respond to the Gulf Coast storms – first Katrina, then Rita.

At his Houston hotel one evening in September, Steve met an elderly disabled woman who had been evacuated and was worried about her house in Beaumont. The National Guard would not let residents back in, but Lesco techs had access letters from Wachovia to work in restricted areas. Steve took

the woman’s address and looked it up on his GPS.

“Her house was three blocks from a branch where we were working,” explained Steve. “So at the end of the next day, we headed over to check on her house.

“We were afraid we’d find bad news, but we discovered that she had only minor damage. Her

deck had been hit by a tree, but her house was fine. The house next door was destroyed. We made digital

“She came down to the lobby, and we loaded the photos of her house on our laptop and showed her the good news. As you can imagine, she was elated and most appreciative. I think she slept well that night.”

Lesco’s Steve Barker uses his laptop to show a Beaumont resident that her house survived Hurricane Rita.

Bank Renovations Completed in Virginia

Lesco recently completed the “refresh” of the Market Street Branch of Wachovia Bank in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The project included a complete renovation of the lobby area.

Amidst Tragedy, Carroll Finds Comic Relief

Lesco’s Ben Carroll left Charlotte to respond to Hurricane Rita. He and coworker Lee Chapman

spent eight days working in 100 degree heat in Texas and Louisiana. Their return flight to Charlotte provided a little comic relief after a grueling stint.

Ben had relied on a large container of Gold Bond Powder in coping with the Texas heat. In packing to come home, he stuck the powder in a mesh pocket on the outside of his bag.

Factor in post 9-11 airport security when you picture Ben and Lee waiting at baggage claim in Charlotte.

Down the conveyor came the baggage. As their eyes grew wide, they saw white powder covering many of the bags and suitcases. The source was quite obviously a bag with an exploded container of Gold Bond powder in a mesh pocket. As Lee laughed hysterically, Ben sheepishly claimed his bag.

Fortunately, airport security recognized the difference between Gold Bond Powder and anthrax.

Texas Hotel Calls On Lesco After RitaHurricane Rita roared through the Gulf regions

of Texas and Louisiana, and one hotel severely damaged was the Holiday Inn Beaumont, owned by Lesco customer John Q. Hammons Hotels, Inc.

The exterior of the hotel was buffetted by 100-plus mph winds, blowing off large sections of the exterior cladding, and rendering window frames and doors inoperable. The parapet wall was severely cracked and much of the coating was blistered or removed.

Predicated on similar projects, John Q. Hammons executives contacted Lesco. Within 24 hours Lesco crews were on the way to Beaumont, with the

necessary labor, materials, tools and equipment to “dry in” the building until a full assessment of the damage could be made.

After emergency work was accomplished, the entire exterior of the building was inspected. Lesco was able to mobilize a complete repair crew within one week. Repairs are now underway, and the hotel is scheduled to reopen in February of 2006.

Beaumont, Texas was hammered by Hurricane Rita, including the Holiday Inn Beaumont.

TECH TIP

Winter Warning: Beware Masonry And Cold Weather

When installing bricks, blocks, or stucco, remember to check the

temperature. The ideal temperature for such work is from 60 to 80 degrees F.

When temperatures fall below these levels, extra precautions must be taken when working with mortar, especially when the temperature is below 40 degrees.

Under such conditions, never wet the masonry units

and never let the mortar or the units freeze. Keep the masonry warm, use a cement that cures quicker, or change to a higher strength cement. An additive may be used with the mortar mix, but call an engineer first.

You want your work to last and your investment to be a wise one. Proper materials must be installed correctly to ensure you get your money’s worth.

are now better able to plan our capital spending. The people at our locations should not be spending time on the services Lesco handles for us.”

Lesco set the new client up with a 1-800 number which any location now uses to report directly to Lesco any maintenance problem or need, from HVAC, to plumbing, to roof leaks. Lesco also handles construction project work including renovations.

“In addition to our regular services,” said Kevin Mayfield, Lesco senior project manager, “we were able to help out with their properties affected by the hurricanes. We provided generators to protect their facilities from power outages and keep the Coke flowing.”

Lesco Provides Leadership to ICRI

Professional expertise is a requirement in the increasingly complex world

of concrete repair. Lesco people continue to lead the way.

The Carolinas Chapter of the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) held its fall convention September 30 - October 1. Attending for Lesco were Don Ford, incoming ICRI president for 2006, Mike Morse, past president of the organization, and Shannon Peede, one of Lesco’s newest employees.

Speakers addressed the waterproofing challenges at the “Big Dig” in Boston, the legalities of contracts, and ICRI’s new web site was introduced.

SAs the old saying goes, Lesco folks in the middle of

hurricane response felt like they’d been “rode hard and put up wet.” Florida regional manager Jeff Miro saved the day on one memorable evening.

With no power and with restaurants shut down like almost everything else, Miro saw that keeping Lesco folks fed was essential to maintaining both stamina and morale, and getting Lesco’s work accomplished.

So one evening, watching Lesco folks arriving bone-weary and hungry, Miro purchased a grill, charcoal, and steaks, set it all up in the motel parking lot, and prepared a meal most said was the best they’d ever eaten.

Renewed and refreshed, Lesco crews were back on the job bright and early the next day.
