Vanier College Policy Regarding Marijuana on Campus As of October 17th 2018, marijuana will be legal in Canada. However, strict regulations regarding where marijuana can be consumed have also been introduced, including the fact that according to Provincial law, smoking marijuana is not allowed on the grounds of any post-secondary institution. This includes all CEGEP’S, meaning smoking marijuana is not permitted on the entire grounds of Vanier College. Consuming marijuana on campus is also prohibited according to Vanier College’s Code of Conduct. As well, Vanier’s new anti-smoking bylaw, which went into effect on August 13th 2018, stipulates that smoking of any kind and of all substances including tobacco products and electronic cigarettes is no longer permitted in any building or on the entire grounds of the College. Finally, the borough of Saint Laurent has passed a bylaw that prohibits marijuana smoking/consumption in public places. Anyone found smoking marijuana on campus will face disciplinary measures, including first-time offenders.

Scotiabank Becomes Principal Sponsor of Canada’s Most Prestigious National Collegiate Marketing Case Competition: Vanier College is Extremely Pleased to Announce New Partnership Vanier College in Montreal is pleased to announce it has acquired the principal sponsorship of Scotiabank for the Scotiabank Vanier College National Marketing Case Competition set to take place in Saint Laurent Quebec on February 9 and 10, 2019. This national competition, formerly known as the BDC Vanier College Case Challenge, is now in its 14th year of welcoming some 30 teams from cegeps and colleges across Canada for what is the most prestigious college level marketing competition in the country. Every year, over 200 people attend or participate in this annual event, which has proved to be an inspiration not only to the competing teams but also to the students in the audience who learn about marketing cases and how to make professional presentations. “We are ecstatic that Scotiabank has accepted to be our new principal sponsor for Vanier’s annual national case competition. In fact, Scotiabank has been involved in the competition as one of our sponsors since 2011 and we are pleased that they have now taken on the additional role of principal sponsor,” said David Moscovitz, main organizer of the event and Vanier College team coach. Scotiabank has promised $46,500 over a three-year period to help cover the costs of running this major event. This sum includes a $3000 annual scholarship divided among the three students on the winning team for them to pursue higher education. “We also want to thank the BDC for their sponsorship of the Case Challenge since 2006. Their support was invaluable in helping Vanier develop this unique national bilingual marketing competition,” added David Moscovitz. “Vanier College is thrilled to welcome Scotiabank as the principal sponsor of the new Scotiabank Vanier College National Marketing Case Competition, said, Mr. John McMahon, Director General of Vanier College. “Partnerships between Vanier and businesses or institutions like Scotiabank are essential to helping Vanier provide students with first-class learning opportunities, such as the case competition where they learn from a demanding real-world experience before a panel of judges from the business and education sectors. This event benefits not only the competitors but also all the marketing students who vie for a spot on a competing team and the students who volunteer during the event. Vanier is grateful for Scotiabank’s generosity and looks forward to this new partnership.” "We are absolutely delighted to be taking our long time partnership to a whole new level. We see the value this annual event brings to its students & possibly to the future generation of Entrepreneurs," said Giuseppe Catanzaro, Scotiabank Regional Director, Small Business Development Quebec Region and Eastern Ontario. Round One of the 2019 competition will take place on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel (Montreal Airport), 7000 Place Robert-Joncas, (514-339-5333). Presentations begin at 10:00 AM and run until 5:00 PM on Saturday. Because of the large number of participants, there will be three theatres of presentations on Saturday. That evening, the top two teams from each of the three theatres will be announced at a gala dinner at 7:00 PM. These top six teams will then go on to compete in the finals Sunday morning, February 10, 2019, following which, an awards luncheon will take place.

NEW STUDENT ARTWORK DISPLAYED IN VANIER'S BOARDROOM

The next time you visit the Vanier College Boardroom in F-216 you will notice some new artwork adorning the walls. The work is entitled V&M

and was created by Vanier graduate Hrad Jean Kedjiakoushian who won first prize honours as part of the 2018 Vanier Student Art Acquisition

Scholarship.

Hrad received $900 for his photography triptych mounted on Dibond aluminum, a second prize of $575 went to Wessel Brussen while third

prize winner Kayla-Alana O’Reilly, received $525.

The Scholarship is unique in the CEGEP network as it provides a concrete opportunity for Vanier’s aspiring

student artists to receive recognition for their work both in monetary terms as well as in exposure at the College.

This $2,000 annual scholarship, which was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Vanier College

Foundation, is designed to encourage our students to pursue their artistic passions while the College benefits

from amassing a bank of art work that can be displayed throughout our campus,

Hrad, who is now studying Art History at Concordia University, eventually wants to become a photographer.

“This year I plan to start my own photography business for professional photoshoots… I will continue to make

my own creative art and will explore new realms within photography,” he said.

Stay tuned as you are likely to see other student artwork appearing in different areas of the campus in the future.

Women’s and Gender Studies: Join Us for Our Next Meeting, Thursday, October 18 at 2:30 (A-573) As teachers, we are in such privileged positions to engage our students with ideas of a better world. This is especially important in times like

these when almost every battle, whether it be over climate change, gender equity, or cultural intolerance and racism, seems to be on reverse

course. Women's and Gender Studies can play an important role in supporting teachers as they explore many of these issues with their

students.

Our next meeting is Thursday, October 18 at 2:30 in A573. Among the topics of discussion will be Vanier's draft Sexual Assault Policy and

education initiatives, Women's History Month, Movember activities, and International Women’s Week 2019 (Gender and Education), and

more. This meeting is open to everyone and we welcome fresh ideas and projects!

If you have questions, please send them my way: [email protected]

KAIROS Blanket Exercise on the colonization of North America, Wednesday, October 24 Vanier’s Never Been Idle Course and the department of Early Childhood Education invite you to participate in another edition of the KAIROS

Blanket Exercise. This activity takes participants through the process of the colonization with the use of blankets on the ground, representing

North America. Participants become the First Peoples and circulate on the continent freely, until contact with European explorers and settlers

changes their lives forever. After the exercise is finished, three members of the Montreal urban Indigenous community will lead talking circles

to help participants process what they just experienced.

The exercise, combined with the follow-up talking circle, is a powerful, educational, and emotional experience that you will not soon forget!

Previous participants have said that their understanding of the lives of Indigenous peoples today increased because of their participation in

this exercise, even if they had already read about these topics in their classes.

As space is limited, we ask that people register at [email protected] or by MIO to Jacky Vallée by Monday, October 22 at

5PM. The location will be disclosed to people who register.

All members of the Vanier community are welcome. Teachers are welcome to assign bonus marks to students for participation. If this is an

activity that you would like to host for one of your classes in the future, you may come to observe the activity. Please circulate this information

among your students and encourage them to participate!

Indigenizing the Curriculum Training: Workshop on the History of Colonization from Indigenous Perspectives with Diane Labelle, October 17, A310 With Diane Labelle from the First Nations Regional Adult Education Council, we will learn about Indigenous perspectives on colonization, which are different from the typical histories we have learned in Western institutions. This will allow participants to both understand the realities of our Indigenous students and gain some knowledge about perspectives and histories to consider in the context of our various fields of work or study. This workshop is open to all employees and students at Vanier College. Please confirm your attendance via email at [email protected] or via MIO to Jacky Vallée. Thank you!

Big Band Success! Last week’s 10th annual Big Band Evening—featuring a Vanier jazz combo, the Jazz Ensemble de Saint-Luc, and the Université de Montréal Big

Band—was a rousing success. Amazing musicianship was on display by all the students involved, right from niveau secondaire up to the

university representatives—if you missed it, you missed a really inspiring and entertaining event. But don’t worry—we do have our annual Big

Band Benefit coming up in April, so that is one you’ll want to catch.

For last week, though, huge and heartfelt thanks to all who made it possible—not only the student performers but band directors Jocelyn

Couture (Vanier), Richard Savignac (École secondaire Saint-Luc), and Ron di Lauro (Université de Montréal); also to our Music Admissions

officer Heather Howes for her support and the wonderful display in the foyer, to Marguerite Corriveau in Communications for her patience

with my slightly late submissions to this fine publication, and to our host for the evening, CJAD 800 news anchor Trudie Mason, who was

charming, entertaining and most gracious (as well as impressed enough to give our event a nice plug the next morning on radio).

It all makes me look forward to next October already!

Choir Concert No. 1: an Early Start

Now, I know that this particular announcement does not typically appear until late November, because the first of

our two big choir concerts usually takes place in early December. BUT…well, when is anything ever guaranteed,

especially in this department? This semester, our Vanier College Choir directed by the amazing and talented Philippe

Bourque, will be performing on Friday, October 26 at McGill University’s Pollack Hall. What is the meaning of this

change to all things good and beautiful? Greater good and beauty is the answer!

Our choir will be teaming up with the McGill Concert Choir to perform Gioachino Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle.

More details and descriptions to come next week, and in the poster below. Tickets can be bought in room A-212 for

10$.

Women of Science 2018 a Great Success The 2018 edition of Women of Science Week featured six inspiring principal investigators from diverse STEM fields including computer science,

pharmacology, oncology, quantum mechanics, geometry, and developmental biology. Five STEM undergraduates and a Masters student took

part in a panel discussion based on student-generated questions. Associate professor Dr. Tanja Tajmel from the Gina Cody School of

Engineering and Computer Science kicked off our panel with motivating words of encouragement with hopes to increase diversity in STEM

fields. Student attendance was double of 2017’s events.

This week would not have been possible without the student volunteers and support of colleagues (both hands-on and moral support).

Invitation to Building Systems Engineering Technology PASS DAY events, October 24, 2018 Teachers, tell your students that on PASS Day, the Building Systems Engineering Technology Program is holding the Vanier/ASHRAE Building

Engineering career show in Jake’s mall for both BSET students, and students of other programs who might be interested in BSET or studying

Building Engineering in the future.

This career show could be of interest to some explorations and science students, and even some Continuing Education students. As well, any

high school students who are free that day are welcome to come and explore the possibilities of studying in the BSET program at Vanier.

Four companies will be giving presentations on career possibilities in the industry and inside the companies themselves. There are some very

big names, including Honeywell, Carrier, Pageau Morel, Bouthillette Parizeau, Nortek, and Baulne, among others, and some smaller names

like Big Ass Fans, who are always up for a show (seriously). Field trips will be given to the Bibliothèque du Boisé, and hosted by an engineer

from the Ville de Montréal who is responsible for the operation of the building.

Jake’s Coop will be open for purchase of coffee and sandwiches.

Email me for more info, or to let me know if you have any staff or students interested in attending. I would really like Jakes to be as full as

possible and since we only have about 60 active students in BSET I am looking for participation from all possible departments. I want to make

it worth it for those companies who took the time to send a delegation to Vanier, and need your help to fill up the event.

Please let your students know about this very interesting event. Presentations begin at 10 am and activities run to 12:30. See the poster belwo

for more details.

Vanier Social Science Festival – October 15-19, 2018 “Social Science 2.0” Humans innovate. It’s what we do. This raises an important question – as societies grow and change, how do humans adapt? What have people done in the past? What will they do in the future? This year’s Social Science Festival explores innovation and change in its various iterations. Our roster of events gives participants the opportunity to learn about the many ways that innovation manifests itself. In a rapidly changing world, it provides the opportunity to delve into the theoretical and practical concepts that aren’t just studied in the social science, but everyone in their day-to-day. All events are free of charge and open to the Vanier community and to the public. No registration is required for talks in the auditorium; however, registration is required for the workshops. Teachers wishing to bring their classes to any event should contact Kelly MacDonald, event organizer, at [email protected] or at 514-744-7500 x 7789.

We acknowledge that this event takes place on Tio’tia:ke (where the currents meet / Montreal), which is situated on the traditional unceded territories of the Kanien'kehá:ka people, more commonly known as Mohawk. Tio’tia:ke was also a gathering place for many First Nations.

See the program and Schedule below for details.

The Social Science Festival was started in 2000 by anthropology teacher, Mark Prentice. Every year, we showcase the work of researchers, activists, community workers and others from Vanier, from the local Montreal community and from elsewhere.
