Students Attend Binghamton Mets Game!Earlier this spring, students who made Honor or Merit Roll for all of the first three marking periods were given a free ticket to attend a Binghamton Mets baseball game. The day designated to honor all area students was Friday, April 27th. Each student received a free hot dog and soda. In addition, the students were called onto the field to be recognized for their achievements. They even were able to meet the mascot Buddy the Bee and Ballwinkle. This was a great way to show students that hard work has more benefits than just good grades! The students that took the opportunity to attend had a great time! Writ-ten by: Alysha Thurley

Cincy Envirothon Team Competes at States

After winning the County Envirothon, the Cincinnatus Envirothon team, made up of Richard Schmidt, Molly Elwood, Mike Klingenberg, Susie Waltz, and Logan Schmidt, travelled to SUNY Morrisville to compete in the State Championships. Teams from each county in the state turned out to learn, compete, and try to demonstrate an understanding of the various components that make up our environment. Over the two days, the teams competed in six different subtests plus a variety of other minor contests. At the end of the day, Cincinnatus had finished second in Forestry, second in Wildlife, first in Geocaching, and a sixth place overall ranking in the state. The team gave Cincinnatus and Cortland County a lot to be proud of and came away with memories of a successful run. Congratulations to all the team members! Submittedy by: Mr. Schmidt

Annual Art Show Celebrates Cincy Talent! On May 30th, Cincy’s creative talents were on display at the school’s annual art show. Student artwork lined the halls and filled the gym. It was a great night for students to show off their hard work to parents, friends, and the community. The Cincy Art Club would like to thank the community, the staff, and the administration for all of their support. It was wonderful to see students, parents, faculty and administration mingling and discussing art together! Our new principal, Dr. Genzel, attended for her first time and spent a lot of time looking at all of the interesting art. As an avid art enthusiast, she was appreciative of our student talent. This year, Art Club sponsored a “People’s Choice” award. Everyone who came to the high school show was given a ballot to vote on their favorite piece in the entire show. The winner was Susie Waltz for her painting “Pop Art”! WHY ART?? The arts really add something special to our school, our community, and our world. Now, more than ever, our world is a visual one. We are constantly bombarded with imagery from television, movies, video games, magazines, fashion, and billboards. All of this imagery is created by artists. Art plays a larger role in society and the work place than it ever has before.

“A surge in demand for multimedia artists, animators, and illustrators—especially those who are computer – and technology-savvy—is projected for 2018, due to companies’ demand for advertising in online and digital formats.” - National Endowment for the Arts

Here at Cincy, the art department is focusing not only on teaching our students art skills but, more importantly, how to think like an artist. The ability to think creatively is important in any field and will set our students apart and ahead as they pursue their careers. Complex thinking and critical thinking is fostered and developed in the arts and this is what employers are looking for. This type of thinking, this ability to think outside of the box, is what leaders are made of.

“According to a new survey of 1,500 chief executives conducted by IBM’s Institute for Business Value (NYSE: IBM - News), CEOs identify “creativity” as the most important leadership competency

for the successful enterprise of the future. That’s creativity—not operational effectiveness, influence, or even dedication.” Our student show was judged by Binghamton art teacher, Maxine Rosenberg. Rosenberg was blown away by the quality of the work shown and stated “I am truly impressed by the level of quality shown here tonight. For a small school, this is truly exceptional.” -Macksi Warner

The Cincy Class of ’14 Travel Bug UpdateThe Cincy Class of ’14 travel bug has continued to travel this year. All totaled the little guy has travelled 11,866.6 miles since his release in September 2009. The little lion was last picked up from a cache in Mississippi in February of this year. I am so pleased to see that this travel bug is continuing to move around. So often I see and hear of travel bugs that come up missing from caches because people keep or lose them. Unfortunately, this seems to have happened with the Class of ’15 travel bug. He was last seen in 2011 after only travelling 68 miles. Despite this setback, I am planning on setting out two travel bugs this summer – one for the Class of ’16 (I didn’t manage to get one out last year) and one for the Class of ’17as they move along into high school. Let’s hope the bugs are picked up quickly and keep moving like the Class of ’14 lion. If you’d like to follow Class of ’14 lion’s travels, you can access its information at www.groundspeak.com Click on play and choose “Find travel bugs” in the pull down menu then type TB2RGGC into the box for the tracking code. I will write an update with the new bugs’ information in the fall once they have been set on their way. Submitted by: Mrs. Bair

What’s happening in Room 329?Well, another school year is drawing to an end and the time has just flown by. Since I last wrote, both the 7th and 8th grade students have been working very hard in an effort to close out the year on a positive note. Even though it has been a year of ups and downs we have found something to smile about in class every day.

The 7th graders worked their way through the final unit of the year and learned about earthquakes and volcanoes. They finished with enough time to get the opportunity to learn more about navigating using a handheld GPS. They were able to do a bit of geocaching and found the hobby enjoyable. We were finally able to go to Taughannock Falls. I found it a bit ironic that we rescheduled the trip to May after we were threatened by thunderstorms in October and we happened to go on a rainy, 450 day. The students had a great attitude and didn’t let the weather dampen their spirits. They came back from the trip ready to prepare for, and complete, finals and are in the process of finishing their final project in which they are designing a procedure for testing how the temperature of water affects the dissolve time of a gummy bear.

The 8th graders finished off the year with a unit on force and motion. They learned about Isaac Newton and how his laws explain the motion of all objects. Their final project required them to apply this knowledge and build a container that would hold an egg and protect it when dropped from several heights. The variety of designs was noticeable this year and seems to correlate with a larger than usual percentage of survivors. Seven containers (out of about 30) kept the egg safe through four drops – 1m and 2m onto the classroom floor, 6m onto grass and 6m onto concrete. These students have also made it through another period of state testing. Their science test consisted of a performance exam in May and a written exam in June. The test came shortly after their trip to Washington D.C. and I was proud at how hard they worked. Once again, I am surprised at not just how quickly the year’s end has snuck up on me, but also at how much I will miss the 8th grade and look forward to seeing the 7th graders in the fall. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer! Submitted by; Mrs. Bair.

Music Dept. Ends the Year with Concerts & FestivalsAs is usually the case, the Music Dept. finished out the year with a variety of events involving a wide range of students.

Ms. Chapman kicked off the year-end concert series with a jungle-themed program on May 14 with the 1st and 2nd graders, involving singing and movement and some expert drum playing. A week later (May 21) the Junior and Senior High band and choruses performed a varied and lively selection of music. This was highlighted by the recognition of our graduating senior musicians, Lacey Crane, Jessilyn Karr and Andrew Phillips. Finally, on May 30, the 5th and 6th Grade Band and Chorus did an admirable job on their concert music. The 5th and 6th Grade Chorus also looks forward to participating in the Cortland All-County Chorus Festival, to be held on June 4 at Homer Intermediate School.

We had 15 students participate in two separate NYSSMA Solo Festivals on three different days in late April and early May. We are very pleased with the progress and improvement that all these students have shown over the course of the year, as is shown by their NYSSMA evaluations. We are especially proud of Darci Prentice who scored a 100 on a challenging Level 6 vocal solo. Congratulations, Darci!

The Cincinnatus Marching Band did a great job playing at the Memorial Day Parades. They started out at Willet and then played in Lower Cincinnatus, Cincinnatus, Taylor and Pitcher. In addition, Cody Metcalf went the extra mile (and more) to play taps at German and Pharsalia. The community has expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the Marching Band for its participation in these important events. The band is looking forward to performing at the 4th of July Parade this summer.

We’re very pleased with the hard work our young musicians have put into their vocal and instrumental development over the past year. We’re all looking forward to a restful summer, hoping that we’ll all come back together in the fall eager to continue the hard work of becoming good musicians!

Shawn Sallis graduated from Cincinnatus in 2003 and then went on to SUNY Cortland. He graduated cum laude from SUNY Cortland with a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics in 2010 and was accepted into the Materials Science and Engineering PhD program at Binghamton University that fall. Shawn worked as a teaching assistant for two semesters before passing the qualifying exams and the preliminary oral defense. Now Shawn works as a research assistant at Binghamton University while he writes his thesis. Two or three times a year Shawn has the opportunity to travel to Long Island for about a week and work at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Lab. One to two times a year he gets to travel to Berkeley, California to work at the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab for about a week.

Right: Shawn is in front of one of the end stations that he works at regularly at the National Synchrotron Light Source.

Shawn’s current research is basically on amorphous oxide semiconductors. Most TVs and computer monitors use transistors behind the screen in order to display images. Currently these transistors are made from amorphous silicon and are actually pretty bad as far as transistors go. They are trying to find a material that mixes some combination of metals and oxygen in the right way so that it can be used to make transistors that work better than the silicon ones. The researchers also hope that the material will allow them to be made cheap, transparent, and able to work even the transistors are on paper or fabric. In order to learn about these materials they shine x-rays onto them and look at the stuff that comes out of them. The light sources are essentially giant rings that have electrons trapped in them moving really, really fast (close to the speed of light). The fact that the electrons are moving so fast and going around in a circle means that they emit x-rays as they go around. Around the ring there are lots of ports that let these x-rays out and into these really long tubes that end in vacuum chambers. Shawn and his colleagues put the samples into those chambers so the x-rays can hit them and watch the electrons and photons that come off the sample because of the x-rays.

Recently, Shawn attended the Fall 2012 meeting of the Materials Research Society where he gave a 15 minute talk and presented a poster. His poster was nominated for the best poster contest for the meeting and won best poster in the symposium. Recently he also made it to the final round of interviews for a month long internship in Seoul, South Korea with Samsung. Unfortunately Shawn didn’t get the internship with Samsung, but what an accomplishment to have made it so far in the process! Additionally, Shawn is listed as a co-author on two papers. One was published in Physical Review B and the other was published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry C.

Shawn decided to go to SUNY Cortland and Binghamton University to remain near family in New York State. Additionally, Binghamton University is currently undergoing significant expansion. Just after he was accepted they finished a brand new Engineering Building, they are in the process of building another new science building and they are planning a new physics and chemistry building to be completed around 2015. State of the art surroundings for Shawn to make his discoveries in! He has held a couple of odd jobs to help with bills while going to school but now works solely as a research assistant. Shawn currently lives in the city of Cortland and commutes to Binghamton during the week, but hopes to move to Binghamton soon as the commute is rather long.

When reflecting on his years at Cincinnatus Central School, Shawn said he definitely learned a lot during his time here. Obviously his favorite classes were science and math-based! He said he owes a lot to both Mr. Nord for physics and chemistry and Mr. Schmidt for Earth Science. They both definitely inspired Shawn to continue on in science. The most fun he can remember having at Cincy was the senior trip, but also remembers spending a lot of time in the computer labs, pretty much anytime he could usually learning things which he has always enjoyed.

Honor Students Visit Knoebels Amusement Park

Forty-one students that made honor roll for the first three marking periods had the opportunity to visit Knoebels Amusement Park in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, June 19th. This park was first established in 1926 and is rated one of America’s top ten amusement parks. Knoebels has been in business 87 years. This historical park offers many adventures for the students. Students enjoyed the day by riding many exciting rides and visiting the many attractions that Knoebels offers. Students were quoted as saying “This is the most fun I’ve had in fifth grade”. Another student said, “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to go on that roller coaster. Can I go again?” A wonderful day was had by all.

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
