Message from Connie Temm, Member-at-LargeIt was wonderful to see 12 CIFM&MDS members (besides myself) at the Celebrate Sound Walk. We had a great time and the rain held off. The Morgan County Sertoma Club has voted once again to donate $200 to the Society. Here is another opportunity to raise funds for the Society. The biggest fundraiser for the Morgan County Sertoma Club is actually the Beef Booth at the Morgan County Fair from July 31st to August 8th. Traditionally we have made a sizable donation to the high school cross-country team and in return they did service in the booth. This year, since school is starting a week early, they will not be able to help, so we are inviting the Folk Music Society to perform service in the booth. In return, there would be a donation to the Society according to number of hours worked by members. So far, the following have signed up to serve: the Raab boys, Susie Kraeszig, Gary and Karen Rogers, Gary and Marie Reiter, Mary and Morgan Sanders and Howard Detamore. There will be a sign-up sheet at the meeting or you can contact Connie Temm 317-840-8151, [email protected]

Money Bag$By Barry Levitt – July 2015

Account status for June 2015 as of this writing (prior to reconciliation):$ 4,293.83 => checking balance (more than one year ago).$ 2,075.00 => net Gig income over the past rolling year ($1,155 above prior period)$ 1,505.00 => Dues income over the past rolling year ($415 below prior period)$ 3,629.45 => Total expenses over the past twelve months ($1,505.25 below prior period)$ 924.59 => Operating surplus for the past twelve months.

Based on the past rolling year’s experience, we have sufficient funds on hand to cover about 14 months of expenses. Membership Status: In May and June we had no new members, two renewals, one reinstatement, and dropped seven former members. Total memberships stand at 68, vs 97 one year ago. Membership Dues: Annual individual membership dues are $25/year, effective January 1st, 2015. The immediate family, living at the same address, of an individual member may be included in a family membership. If your membership is due or past due, please send a check to CIFM&MDS, P.O. Box 1503, Indianapolis, IN 46206-1503, or catch the treasurer at the next meeting. We are always happy to take your money. Songbooks: Printed (on paper) versions of the songbooks are still available while supplies last. Songbooks will also be available in electronic format on flash drive (memory stick). Printed versions of the Main Songbook with or without the Mountain Dulcimer Tabbing by Lew Mastin are available to all members in good standing for $30 each. Fiddle tunes are included in the Main Songbook, but a special “Fiddlers Edition” is available as a separate supplement for $5 each. Songbooks will also be available in electronic format (flash drive) for $10 each. See me at the meeting if you are in need of any of these songbooks. Jean Vance has been a great help providing treasury service assistance at our CIFM&MDS meetings the last several years.

And Now a Word from our President, Dave Tucker:Thanks to all Folk Music Society members, family, and friends who made the 41st Annual Eagle Creek Folk Music Festival another smashing success. Thanks especially to Cathy Platt, our Music Director and Festival Chair, for all of her efforts toward this year’s festival. You might as well mark your calendars right now – the 42nd Annual Eagle Creek Folk Music Festival will take place June 11-12, 2016.

Reaching the halfway point in 2015, it’s already been a great year for recorded music. Here are three of my favorite current releases that might appeal to folk music fans. “The Earls of Leicester” is the self-named release from dobro player Jerry Douglas and a group of the best bluegrass musicians in the world. The Earls of Leicester call themselves a Flatt & Scruggs tribute band, but they’re much more than that. Virtuosic instrumentals, beautifully interwoven vocals, and modern sound production make this a “can’t miss” for old time music fans.

“Still the King – Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys”, from Asleep at the Wheel and numerous guest artists, is a wonderful treatment of Wills’ Texas Swing music. Guests as varied as the Del McCoury Band to the Old Crow Medicine Show, from Merle Haggard to Pokey LaFarge, lend their talents to this excellent collection of songs. The Avett Brothers perform the Folk Music Society fiddle tune, “The Girl I Left Behind Me”, with a rollicking set of lyrics.

For old time music purists, nothing arrives more genuine and authentic than “Classic American Ballads” from the Smithsonian-Folkways label. A collection of story songs, “Classic American Ballads” features original recordings from famous musicians such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as lesser-known artists like Hobart Smith and Pink Anderson. Doc Watson and Bill Monroe open the collection with the Folk Music Society Big Band favorite, “Banks of the Ohio”, and true to folk music tradition there are few survivors in any of the songs. As we head into the second half of 2015, it’s time for Folk Music Society members to begin considering taking on officer and board positions in 2016. Every volunteer non-profit benefits from a turnover in leadership, and the Folk Music Society is no exception. Please think about how you might give back to the Society. We could use your new ideas and talents.

EAGLE CREEK KUDOS from Cathy Platt

I want to sincerely thank everyone who made the 41st Annual Eagle Creek Folk Festival such a success. Without these volunteers, there simply would not have been a festival. Because they are such a fabulous group, I want to mention them by name: Masters of Ceremony: Phil Slates and Dan Henkel (Sat.) and Phil and Janet Dodd (Sun.); Festival Photographers: Dave Wensits and Susie Kraeszig; Workshops: Tim Hoke and Red Rum, Tom Meier, Lew Mastin and Sharon Day; Setup/Cleanup (pretty much anything that needed to be done): John Platt, Cindy Condon, Phil Slates, Carla Slates, Gary Rogers, Steve Arbuckle, Ruth Slates, Dave Slates, Mary Sanders and Howard Detamore; Society Info Table: Mary Sanders, Carla Slates, Howard Detamore, Tom Meier, John Platt, Connie Temm and Dianne Kafka. Sound: Steve Kessinger, Jason Vaughn, and Carlos. Thanks to all of you for stepping up to help. Some of these folks did double and triple duty! They really made this festival happen.

Thanks, too, to all of the performers. Our show this year was wonderful from beginning and to end. Mother Nature gave us good weather until the very end of Sunday. There was a large audience, many of whom came to the park specifically to see the Festival.

Eagle Creek 2016 (number 42!!) will be here before you know it. Please consider volunteering to be on the Festival Committee for next year. It isn’t hard, there are few meetings and, in order for this tradition to continue, we all need to support it.

July Notes from your Music CoordinatorCathy Platt, [email protected]; phone: 317-485-5010

Thanks to everyone who has played a gig with us in the last few months! It’s been crazy and fun! After our hectic schedule through June, we are taking a bit of a breather before it gets busy again.

Special Performance. For the July meeting, there will be no practice hour. Instead we will have Gary Kiser play from 3-4 pm instead. The performance hour will be from 2-3 pm, as usual. As some of you know, the last 3 acts on Sunday were cancelled due to a Severe Weather warning. One of those was Gary Kiser’s set. We always look forward to Gary’s set at Eagle Creek and will be glad for him to play for us at the meeting.

Dan Reneau and Dave Wensits, whose sets were also cancelled at Eagle Creek, will play for us at the September meeting.

Here is part of what is coming up in the next few months. Sign-up sheets will be available at the next meeting.August 23, 1-3 pm (tentative time), Indiana State Fair. Practice for this gig at August meeting.September 2, 7-8 pm, Franklin United Methodist Church. Practice at the August meeting.October (date and time TBD), Covered Bridge Festival, Parke County. Practice at October meeting.December 5, 1-2 pm, Mooresville Library. Practice at the November meeting.

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Cathy Platt, the Eagle Creek

Festival coordinator. It takes a lot of planning to put on a two-day festival, and cathy did a great job!

Thank you, cathy!
