Opening! Vol 39 October 2016
Carol* has been in and out of Lebanon County Correctional Facility (LCCF) for many years. As a result, she is no longer able to return to her profession as an elementary school teacher. She has been in numerous treatment programs for her addiction to alcohol and drugs, but has always gone back to her former lifestyle. During this incarceration, however, something changed. She began to attend a 12-Step Class with an open mind and teachable spirit. Several weeks ago,
I felt led to ask her to teach a class on the spiritual principles of 12-Step
recovery, seeing it as a chance to allow her to share some of her growth and insight and to use her professional teaching abilities. She jumped at the opportunity and did a fantastic job of teaching two classes with humility and creativity. She wrote me a thank you note telling me it was transformative for her and has given her the hope of working in the drug
and alcohol field when she is released.
