Talking Breeding - Victoria
THIS week’s review of litters selected from the
Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending
22 December, starts with a litter of six pups by leading
national sire, Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy
x Princess Bale).
Registered by Maffra breeder, Desmond Dooley,
for the Dooley and Rossin Syndicate, the one dog and
five bitches, are from the beautifully bred bitch, Perfect
Madison (October 2011 El Grand Senor x Perfect
Future), whose dam is by Primo Uno x Ivory Tower
(Head Honcho x Greenpark Julie).
She is from a litter of four named, all winners,
who won 48 races between them.
Her contribution was 13 wins and 25 placings
from her 69 starts, with wins over 525 metres at The
Meadows (30.10), 390 metres (22.19) and 450 metres
(25.81) at Shepparton, 400 metres at Warragul (22.79),
298 metres at Traralgon (16.81), 440 metres at Sale
(25.20), 311 metres at Cranbourne (17.93), 425 metres
at Bendigo (24.19) and 460 metres at Geelong (26.42).
She has one previous litters on file, with three
dogs and one bitch, whelped in September 2016, by
Cosmic Rumble.
Shifty Mifty litter CRESWICK breeder, Stefano
Cassar has a litter of six pups
on the list by former top class
sprinter, KEYBOW
(December 2011 Take The
Kitty x Key Exit).
The four dogs and two
bitches are from the handy
short course winner, Shifty
Mifty (February 2010 Paddy’s Flame x Perfect
Cocktail), whose dam is by Big Daddy Cool x
Cawbourne Smokey (Token Prince x Smokey Melody).
She is from a litter of seven named, with six
winners, led by Charmed Speed, who raced 98 times,
for 48 wins and 32 placings.
Her record on the track was 79 starts, for eleven
wins and 26 placings, with four wins over 311 metres at
Cranbourne (17.91), three wins over 400 metres at
Geelong (22.91) and single wins over 298 metres at
Traralgon (17.22), 390 metres at Shepparton (22.57),
390 metres at Warrnambool (22.27) and 390 metres at
Ballarat (22.42).
She also had a very good record at Coursing,
where she won four finals.
She did well with her first litter, whelped in
December 2013, by Kilty Lad, which produced Caco
Potion, Kilty Conscience, Mendacious Lad, My Names
Schultz, Shifty Joshua and Showgirl Miss, who were all
winners, but then unfortunately lost the only pup in her
last litter, by Cosmic Rumble.
Kinloch Brae litter*
EUMMEMERING breeder, Vincent Daffy has a nice
litter of ten pups on the list this week, by international
stud success, Kinloch Brae* (August 2005 Craigie Mo
Town x Greys Free Style).
The seven dogs and three bitches are from the

GRNSW Hot Weather Policy FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOT
WEATHER
Racing
When will a race meeting be abandoned due to hot
weather?
Stewards may abandon a meeting where the
temperature rises above 38°C or the stewards are of the
opinion that the temperature is likely to rise above 38°
C.
At what temperatures can a greyhound be
scratched without penalty due to the heat?
Stewards may allow a greyhound to be withdrawn
from an event without penalty where the Bureau of
Meteorology official forecast temperature is 32°C or
higher. Any application for withdrawal without penalty
must be made prior to the official scratching time of
the race meeting, however, the stewards may also
consider late requests.
Is there anything I should do when travelling to a
race track on hot days?
Participants must ensure that their car or trailer is
sufficiently cool before greyhounds are loaded for
transportation. A car can be started and air-conditioned
prior to the time of departure. Greyhounds can be
hosed or toweled down with water prior to being
placed in the car or trailer. When planning transport to
the track, participants should plan to arrive as close as
possible to the opening time of kennelling. Participants
must also provide their greyhounds with adequate
water and, if appropriate, ice.
Trialling
When will trialling be abandoned due to hot
weather? Clubs must abandon any trialling where the
temperature rises above 38°C or a club is of the
opinion that the temperature is likely to rise above 38°
C.
When is it not acceptable to keep greyhounds in
non-air-conditioned trailers during trials?
Greyhounds must not to be kept in non-air-conditioned
vehicles or trailers during race meetings or trialling
when the temperature reaches 22°C or higher.
Will clearance trials be conducted between
November and February?
Yes, but under strict conditions. All clearance trials are
to be booked with GRNSW before 9am on the day of a
race meeting. Any greyhound that is not booked in by
this time will not be permitted to trial.
Can I still trial after the last race between
November and February?
For trainers with greyhounds drawn to race at the
meeting, clubs may take bookings for trialling after the
last race only up to the maximum number of kennels
available. If no kennels are available, trials must be
denied unless the greyhound is housed in an air-
conditioned trailer or an air-conditioned vehicle. Any
other greyhound trialling after the last race must arrive
no more than 20 minutes prior to the end of a race
meeting.
If I do not have an air-conditioned trailer, can I still
attend trial sessions at a racetrack on non-racedays
if the temperature is above 22°C?
Yes. Clubs must provide access to air-conditioned
kennels for greyhounds on any occasion that trialling
occurs at a race track, unless the greyhounds are
housed in an air-conditioned trailer or an air-
conditioned vehicle.
General
Why did GRNSW feel the need to revise the
existing hot weather policy?
The revised Hot Weather Policy is evidenced-based
and utilises recently published research into heat stress
in racing dogs from the University of Adelaide.
The research paper is available at the following
link:
https://digital.library.adelaide.edu.au/dspace/
bitstream/2440/101252/2/hdl_101252.pdf
Who set the temperature figures and cut-offs within
the hot weather policy?
GRNSW set the temperature guidelines in the Hot
Weather Policy. The new temperature ‘cut-offs’ are
consistent with the new GRV Hot Weather Policy.
Could GRNSW work with the TAB to arrange for
night or morning meetings where possible to avoid
the heat of the day?
GRNSW is in constant discussions with Sky Racing
and TAB to ensure that all scheduled meetings can be
staged accordingly. However, there will be some
instances due to schedule and logistical restraints
which will unfortunately mean some meetings may
have to be abandoned.
Will GRNSW be helping some clubs to comply with
the new hot weather guidelines?
GRNSW funding is available for each club to install
air-conditioning units in the kennelling areas under
their annual funding allocations.

Group Race Results The Meadows—Friday 5 January
Silver Chief in Thompson’s ‘range’ By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley, for GCA
The Thompson kennel’s remarkable love affair with the
Feikuai Greyhounds Silver Chief continued at The
Meadows last Friday night when hot favourite Out Of
Range was a dominant all-the-way winner of the Group
1 Classic.
Out Of Range is trained by Seona Thompson,
whose husband Jason boasts five Silver Chief victories,
courtesy of Light Of Fire (1994), Awesome Assassin
(1996), Ben’s Fury (2005), Fedex (2009) and Godsend
(2012).
However, it was a Group 1 first for Darren Puleio
and his father Michael, who bred and race the
sensational Fernando Bale – Nicki Fields litter,
headlined by Out Of Range.
“We’ve bred and owned a lot of city winners over
the years, but the best dogs we bred were Boris Fields
and Xtreme Knocka, who we sold as pups,” Darren
explained.
“So this is the biggest race we’ve been involved in
as owners, and it’s a huge thrill.”
After a 30.17sec heat victory, Out Of Range ran
second in his semi-final, but started $2.40 favourite in
2018’s first Group 1 event, courtesy of a rails draw and
an imposing six from eight record over The Meadows’
525m course.
Out Of Range took full advantage of his prized inside
alley to hold the lead in the all-important charge to the
first turn.
While Out Of Range wasn’t able to break clear, he kept
kicking strongly to repel Degani ($5.90) by .79 of a
length in 29.83sec, eclipsing his previous personal best
of 29.90sec at The Meadows, with Fast Car Driving
($12.60) close up in third.
Out Of Range’s litter brother and kennelmate Poke The
Bear was first reserve for the Silver Chief and while he
missed a shot at the $100,000 winner’s purse, Poke The
Bear set The Meadows alight earlier in the night when
coming from the rear of the field to clock a scintillating
29.71sec in the free-for-all.
Out Of Range has now won nine of his 14 starts, while
Poke The Bear has won 10 from 16.
“I only breed one or two litters a year because I
work full-time running Ram Security, which sponsors
the Cranbourne and Warragul greyhound clubs.
“I breed the litters at my property in Langwarrin,
which is almost five acres in size, and then I send them
to dad at 10 months of age. He lives in Mulgrave (in
suburban Melbourne), where he gets them used to
traffic by walking the streets with them. Then we send
them to a breaker, they go back to dad for pre-training
and then finally we send them off to be trained.”

Racing 2 Rehome is an
all-volunteer non-profit
corporation operating in
Victoria.
We are a new and small
group established in 2017.
Our greyhounds are
primarily those that are
retired from or affiliated
with the racing industry.
Each dog is fostered in a
home environment while
they transition to pet life.
This means they live with
a foster family until they
are adopted.
Finding the right home is the most important thing
we can do for our greyhounds.
We will assist you through the adoption process in
selecting the right greyhound for
your circumstances, and to ensure your new family
member has the smoothest transition into their new
life with you.
All of our dogs live in foster homes before being
adopted. Foster homes are always a critical need.
By being a foster home, you provide a temporary
home for one of the greyhounds that has been
brought into Racing 2 Rehomes adoption program.
You acquaint them with "life inside a home" versus
life at the kennel or track. It can be a rewarding, and
sometimes challenging, experience.
The most common comment about fostering a
greyhound, is "I'm afraid I will get too attached."
Well, that is very true for each of us, but remember,
"if you adopt you can save one, if you foster you can
save many."
As a foster carer you teach them house manners, the
joys of toys, and the love that can be found as a pet -
fostering is a very special endeavor. And it's a need
that's not going away anytime soon. There's a
lifetime of dogs needing foster homes out there.
As a foster carer, you sacrifice a bit of your heart
and your home to the greyhounds. The dogs bond
quickly. It is hard to give them up when they are
adopted. But remember, "The gift is in the goodbye."
Fostering is a lesson in unselfish love.
Every foster dog that comes into your home will
touch your life. There are tears - tears at saying
goodbye when they go to their forever home; tears of
frustration sometimes when they've made a mess;
tears of worry if they're sick or injured. But there are
smiles too - smiles at the first week of perfect house
manners; smiles at the first discovery of playing with
toys; smiles when you see the love their new forever
home has for them.
The mood swings of fostering can be many, but so
are the rewards. Every dog has a different
personality and teaches you something different
about yourself. Each foster enriches your life and
very soon you can't imagine your home without a
foster dog.
Who should foster? Anyone who can’t make a
long term commitment to owning a pet, Families
who want to try having a pet before committing to
one with the children’ Those who travel a lot but
would love to have a pet when they are home,
Perfect as a companion for anyone living alone or
you just want to make difference in the world.
To be a foster carer all you will need is a little
patience and a lot of love to give the dog, a fenced
yard, 15-20 mins to walk the dog a couple days a
week and the foster dog must be allow the dog to
sleep inside. You don’t need any previous skills or
experience, a big back yard or need to be home all
the time with the dog.
As a foster carer you will be support by the R2R
team. We match a dog that fits your life style,
provide the food and everything you will need to
care for the dog.
We cover vet bills and should you fall in love you
have the first option to adopt.

NOTORIOUS KING
Black dog, December 2015 Barcia Bale x Rockin’
Josie. Owner: Big Dogs Syndicate.
Trainer: John Van-Konyenburg, Devon Meadows.
Racing for only the fourth time when handy
third over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 7 January.
Started from box one and beaten 3.89 lengths in
the race won by Dyna Zoron (30.43).
Three runs prior to that were fifth, Cranbourne
311 metres, fifth, 460 metres at Warragul and second,
515 metres Sandown (SAP) 1 January.
Looks a nice type who is maturing with
experience.
NO EXCUSE
Blue Brindle dog, September 2015 Fernando Bale x
Scusami Hotel. Owner: Triple Trouble Syndicate.
Trainer: Glenn Campbell, Anakie.
Had no luck at all when beaten 9.74 lengths
when unplaced over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on
7 January in the race won by Menzali (30.03).
That was 29th start for one win, over 450 metres
at Shepparton (26.27) and nine placings.
Overall strike rate isn’t too bad and he certainly
bred to win so keep following him.
ASTON LELANI
Black bitch, August 2015 Fabregas x Aston Ainslie.
Owner: Ray Borda, Trainer David Condon, Devon
Meadows.
Was racing for just the eleventh time, from box
four, over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 7 January,
when handy third, beaten 6.33 lengths in the race won
by Cibulkova (29.74).
Prior to that her ten starts had produced three
wins and two placings, with two wins over 460 metres
at Warragul (26.47 and 26.29) and one over 400
metres at Geelong (22.48).
The only other pup named in her litter is Aston
Frankel, who has raced 24 times, for eight wins and
ten placings.
Is a nice type who continues to improve with
experience. Worth following up.

KIWI POLICIES POSE DANGERS
There’s a much bigger concern than sheepskin lures
and non-chasers. The euthanasia question remains
with us and may get more annoying.
All sorts of rules and restrictions have been
implemented on the disposal of unrequired dogs,
which is fine up to a point. But the greyhound
industry has yet to make a solid case that it is an
acceptable and legal procedure, even though it is
routine in other dog breeds, horses or in Council and
RSPCA compounds.
I bring that up because the October 2017 inquiry in
NZ claims that euthanasia is “said to be unacceptably
high”, quoting a previous 2013 report, and as a result
there is “a need to reduce the numbers of greyhounds
bred and imported”.
Accordingly, NZGRA “should continue to develop
the means of making accurate projections of future
requirements and … by regulation ensure that the
numbers of greyhound bred and/or imported do not
exceed the requirements of the industry”.
In other words, some version of Big Brother should
decide how a commercial industry is run.
This invokes memories of silly GA projects to hire a
consultant to tell each Australian state how many
pups each should permit, how many races should be
run and followed up with an inaccurate “confidential”
memo to CEOs proposing that the industry should be
cut by one third to combat alleged objections to
euthanasia and live baiting.
If that was not enough, tri-state inquiries came up
with similar solutions to alleged “overbreeding”
– ie bigger cutbacks.
Today, all of that has been consigned to the rubbish
bin, overbreeding has become under breeding, empty
boxes proliferate, industry income is endangered and
breeding numbers are in free-fall due to a lack of
confidence by investors.
The common thread is that three of these inquiries
were conducted by lawyers and two (in Victoria) by
public servants, none of whom demonstrated any
ability to assess what was really going on in the
breeding sector. Most had neither greyhound nor
racing experience or skills. It showed.
The shame is that each Australian state authority
blindly followed the nonsensical recommendations –
indicating that they misunderstood the situation, too.
Subsequent attempts to recover lost ground have been
equally futile.
So, beware any feedback from across the Tasman and
keep making a case that that while euthanasia should
be minimised, it is not avoidable entirely – in respect
to greyhounds or any other animals.

HISTORY
I came across this photo last week, when doing
some research for the Dick Prendergast Obituary.
Dick can be seen in the back row of the photo, and
as with all the competitors, your almost 40 years
younger editor, these were certainly our better days,
on the track anyway.
A few of the runners I recall, took a while to
recover after the grueling event , myself included.
Dick Prendergast took a heavy fall at the last
hurdle, and brought down a number of other
runners as they attempted to clear the hurdle.
A stewards inquiry was held into the running of the
race and Dick was suspended for 3 months, not that
any of us ever attempted the feat again.
Dick was a good mate, to many in the industry,
especially on this side of the fence, and he will be
sadly missed.
