President’s Message

Ann Galt

Last year, in addition to our usual activities, we instituted changes, some to

ease the work of our volunteers, some to enhance our digital format, some to

improve communication, and some to track our organization. This year, my

goal has been to continue with our existing activities and evaluate, not only

our recent changes, but also the activities we do. Your input has been and is

key.

Recently, I completed a survey for ZAP that concentrated on community

diversification as it relates to our organization. It made me think about how

broad diversification spans within our community. It can be age, race,

religion, education, socio-economics, gender, geography and more. It made

me think about our organization's mission, our activities, and our future.

We do many things. We offer opportunities at no cost or with discounts. We

provide high school scholarships. We offer free memberships at the Utah

State Fair. We work with community businesses to promote and support

water media art. We promote chapter development within the State. This

June, we had our 3rd Annual Arts and the Park event, promoting plein air

water media and our organization in southern Utah. In infancy is our

Journaling Group, initiated by Bessann Swanson.

What can we do better or more? What other activities could our organization

provide in our community. Can we do more to diversify our organization? Do

we want to? If lack of supplies and transportation is a hurdle, can we do

anything in that realm? How do we promote water media art in other parts of

our State?

We all have so much to offer each other and our community as a whole. If

we had a blank UWS diversification canvas, what would we put on it. Just as

we often sit before a blank paper, what can we create with our organization.

Holiday Party RECAP

Thanks to Paul and his staff of our

local Dick Blick art store, we enjoyed a

crafty evening of painting butterflies

with watercolor crayons and iridescent

paints. As usual, they also sent us

home with art supply gifts. And thanks

to our members, we stuffed ourselves

with every imaginable tasty nibble and

treat in the pot luck buffet.

Meanwhile, we talked to our friends

and watched a slide show of our year

so far. Keeping with tradition, those of

us who brought a small painting or

card got a beautiful one in return.

Thanks to everyone who participated

and especially all who pitched in to

help out.

Willamarie Huelskamp,

Alterations / Critiques

Willamarie taught painting for the

University of Utah’s Life Long

Learning program for 15 years.

Becoming a mother led her to more

lifestyle changes as she traded in her

vagabond outdoor painting lifestyle to

become a studio artist. Today she

paints in a beautiful modern loft style

studio and teaches annual watercolor

workshops in locales around the

world.

Occasionally, she indulges herself

with slow travel, making recent

walking pilgrimages in Japan,

England, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

Her motto in art and life is to stay

grounded, find balance, paint daily.

She’s a signature member of the Utah

Watercolor Society, where her

paintings have received four best-of-

show awards and her entries to UWS

annual mini-show received awards

during ten consecutive years.

Mini Workshop with Jeannie

Millecam Line Drawing and Watercolor

Sons of Utah Pioneers Bldg.

Jan 20-21, 9am-4pm each day

Sue Martin’s Mini Workshop,

Variations on a Theme, was all about

visual transformations. After two days,

we emerged with new skills, ideas,

and information that will help us to

explore our creativity. We worked with

glue/paste, stamps, texture, spray,

wax-paper, plastic wrap, Inktense

products, art graph, acrylics, and

more.

Painting out this fall has been

wonderful!

October found us at Pete's Rock on

Wasatch Blvd. The rain the night

before made the colors very deep.

November we painted in Bountiful at

Mueller Park Canyon. Again the

overnight rain made the redwood

colors so deep. We had lots of

painters and a few extras joined us for

lunch.

December Old Midvale on Main Street

was our last year end Paint Out.

UWS November Mini

Workshop with Sue Martin

RECAP

Participants had only one photo to

work from, making what Sue calls

“iterations.” Each painting in a series

is different from the one before it,

while using the same subject.

Collage, stamping, and mat medium

added layers and a new dimension to

our work.

Everyone attending had a great time!

In this workshop we will focus on

different ways to approach line and

watercolor wash. We will create

different types of line using a variety

of tools and mediums such as fine

point marker, brush pens, stick and

India ink. We will also try different

ways to approach a watercolor wash.

Students will be challenged to start a

sketchbook and complete 25

sketches in 30 days.

Mary Pusey’s painting “Pond Tour

III” was accepted into the 120th

Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club

Juried Exhibition at the National Arts

Club in New York City, NY. The idea

for this piece came from the “Pond

Tour” ISA invitation to artists to paint

at Salt Lake Valley ponds visited by

Garden Club members. Another piece

from this series was accepted into the

UWS Fall Member Exhibition and won

a Juror’s Award.

We spent time painting and networking

with other Professional Women Artists

of Utah. It was a bit chilly to be painting

outdoors but we were in good

company. We were able to meet at the

Maynard Dixon Gallery in Mt. Carmel.

We had dinner surrounded by some

fine paintings in the gallery.

News From the North – UWS Cache Valley Chapter (CVC)

President’s Message

The Cache Valley Chapter of UWS is thrilled with

our new venue for our Dec 2016 Exhibition, “My

Town.” After some confusion on minimum size

requirement (totally my fault), we have still

assembled a wonderful collection of paintings. We

have 42 paintings from the Cache Valley Chapter

plus 11 more from the wider society for a total of 53

paintings. I hope many of you will come to see the

exhibit at the historic Thatcher Mansion, 35 W 110

S in Logan. I am constantly amazed at the level of

talent and skill seen in our membership, both in

Cache Valley and in the wider watercolor society.

On November 12, we were treated to a workshop

by Holly Conger, who uses a poured acrylic

technique. Holly gave us a demonstration at our

November 8th meeting, and followed that up with a

workshop the following Saturday. “It went by way

too fast,” said one attendee. Another stated, “I

loved this workshop...it doesn't get much better.

Holly is a thoroughly delightful teacher, who

emphasized what she calls “spontaneous

mindfulness.”

The technique involved diluting and pouring acrylic

paint over gessoed surfaces. We used layers, and

thought about how the paint would dry. It is a less

predictable method of art making, and we had fun

experimenting and making some “really fun art.”
