Everyone seems to have such a history with each other. It’s not as approachable as it could be...Especially for a younger audience. The exhibitions, for instance, are almost always full of and won by professional artists. People ask me every time if I am going to enter something, but why would I? I can’t compete with professionals and artists with many years of experience. Has there been any thought given to an amateur category, such as the Cache Valley Chapter did for its winter exhibition? It might be a start for people who would like to participate but feel they have no chance as it stands now. I like the direction of the Spring Exhibition with the free classes for teens. (The Utah Cultural Celebrations Center has asked UWS to provide instructors for classes during the first week of the Spring Exhibition.) It seems like we could seek out more opportunities to reach the public and teach some basics of painting, and show how fun it is. At other local exhibitions maybe? Such as the Home show, or anything art oriented that happens locally (I am sorry to say I cant think of any other examples). Maybe this would be a good place to spend some of our funds, getting more people interested in painting. More outreach oriented. More hands on. Speaking at local schools, colleges. If we just spend our time preaching to the choir and not seeking out new members and cultivating new interest, the group will eventually whither. Seems like the really successful watercolor artists in Utah kind of stay away (from being more involved in the Utah Watercolor Society.) WHY? Involvement. This is what makes a better organization, one that moves forward and becomes stronger. Involvement fosters new ideas, new perspectives, and diversity of activities. It also is an avenue to meeting our artists and working with them in a more intimate manner. You get to know people by getting to know them in face-to-face conversations and interactions. Every bit of volunteerism helps. I am proud of what UWS offers. I am proud of the hard work our UWS and UWS-CVC Boards provide. We need to keep it going and broaden out reach. What can you do to help? Where do you fit in? Where can UWS fill gaps in our community? Thank you for your comments and ideas. ~Ann Galt

President’s Message

Ann Galt

What does the future hold for UWS? In my last message, I talked of our future…of our need to look within the community to strengthen that future. I asked you to share your thoughts. Here are (edited) emails I received: • As someone brand new to watercolor, I can say

that UWS is intimidating. There are so many professional-semi professional artists. Everyone seems to have such a history with each other.

It’s not as approachable as it could be...Especially for a younger audience.

• The exhibitions, for instance, are almost always full of and won by professional artists.

• I like the direction of the Spring Exhibition with the free classes for teens.

• If we just spend our time preaching to the choir and not seeking out new

members and cultivating new interest, the group will eventually whither. • Seems like the really successful watercolor artists in Utah kind of stay

away (from being more involved in the Utah Watercolor Society.) WHY? Involvement. This is what makes a better organization, one that moves forward and becomes stronger. Involvement fosters new ideas, new perspectives, and diversity of activities. It also is an avenue to meeting our artists and working with them in a more intimate manner. You get to know people by getting to know them in face-to-face conversations and interactions. Every bit of volunteerism helps. I am proud of what UWS offers. Local artist Paige Kimball will be demonstrating at the March monthly member meeting. Pouring with Paige, will focus on watercolor pouring techniques to create a painting. Paige fell in love with her first box of Crayola crayons when she was quarantined with Scarlet Fever at age three. Although her color choices and sense of design have evolved, she still loves creating and experimenting with a variety of pigments, from watercolor and acrylic to vegetable juices. She feels that mastering the elements of these pigments takes great skill and effort, and that every home should own at least one fine watercolor. Her work can be seen in various locations in Salt Lake City, UT. You can visit her website at www.paigekimballfineart.com.

Instructor/coach Seeks One Motivated Student. Sue Martin will begin working out of a new studio space in downtown Salt Lake City in Spring 2017. Sue is looking for a motivated student to work with her one half-day per week. The ideal student is someone who aspires to be a professional artist, wants to experiment like crazy to find his/her voice, wants coaching on the business side of art, wants to complete (well, get a good start on) a coherent body of work and will commit to a three-month contract. Sessions will be mid-week. Travel schedule can be accommodated. Note: this studio will have multiple art mediums, including oils. There will be a vent/fan, but if you are sensitive to materials, this might not be the place for you. If interested, call or email Sue Martin for more information. Willamarie presented at the UWS Meeting Jan. 3rd. We enjoyed her creative way of layering, using positive and negative spaces, addition of color, sprayed washes-and watching the process flow. “Start with a lot of chaos, make a mess, then find something. If I weren’t having fun, then I wouldn’t do it,” she laughed. Click here to sign up for her amazing workshop!

A night of demonstration and awards were enjoyed by UWS Members. Rebecca Livermore, signature member of the Utah Watercolor Society who has received four best-of-show awards and entries to UWS annual mini-shows over the last ten consecutive years demonstrated for those in attendance. Thank you Rebecca.

If you look, you can see that Danielle has replaced the name brand of the car with her own name. Anna’s depiction of the refineries Is colorful and amazingly detailed. The refineries never looked so good! Ann Galt and Maura Naughton traveled to Springville Museum of Art in January to select the winners. The art work this year was exceptional with more watercolor paintings than in previous years. It made for an extremely competitive selection process. It's reassuring that with cuts to the arts programs in our public schools, these creative young artists are finding a way to produce amazing finished pieces. The presentations were made on Saturday, Feb 5, 2017 at the Springville Museum of Art by Maura Naughton and Jennifer Love. The Cache Valley winner, Danielle Dayley, received her award at the UWS-CVC meeting Feb 14, 2017. A very nice Valentine! The High School Show will hang at the Springville Museum of Art through March 24, 2017. Congratulations to our outstanding young artists this year.! Thanks to all the UWS members who have supported the scholarship program with generous donations of art supplies or cash. Our UWS art supply portfolios are one of the more popular awards presented at the awards ceremony receiving compliments from parents, teachers and museum staff members. To help our scholarship winners, money is always welcome. If you are interested in participating on the scholarship committee, please contact Maura Naughton ([email protected]) or DeAnna Hulme ([email protected]).

Congratulations to the 2017 (UWS and UWS-CVC) Mary Straight Scholarship awardees chosen from the Springville Museum of Arts 45th Annual High School Show! Danielle Dayley from Sky View High School with Old Time Blues, and Anna King from Woods Cross High School with her painting, Refinery won the 2017 Mary Straight Scholarship Awards from UWS and UWS-CVC.

RECAP: UWS January Mini Workshop with Jeannie Millecam

Jeannie Millecam’s calm demeanor and confident instructional style made the Line and Wash Mini Workshop feel like home. Jeannie’s approach to contour line drawing was fresh and productive, resulting in smiles and beautiful sketches from all who attended. She reinforced the techniques to bring us “back to basics”. We have also been challenged to complete 20 sketches in the next 30 days, as a practice exercise to enhance our drawing skills; practice makes progress! Thanks, Jeannie!

One of the benefits I have appreciated in the Utah Watercolor Society is the opportunity to learn and grow in my skill as a watercolorist. When I first started a few years ago, I was very mistrustful of watercolor as a medium. My background was all in oils, and I had never had any instruction in watercolor. In a relatively short time after joining UWS-CVC, I was shown in demonstrations and videos from our CVC library, that watercolor doesn’t have to be so scary or intimidating. Each class and workshop and demonstration has added a new technique or perspective I have come to see in myself and other artists I have met, how each of us has a “genealogy” of art development. I know my style, when it finally settles down, will contain a bit of Lester Lee, Joseph Alleman, Carl Purcell, Ian Ramsay, Thomas Schaller, Ernie Verdine, and other wonderful artists I have been exposed to. Thanks to all of you, past, present and future. ~Phil

News From the North – UWS Cache Valley Chapter (CVC)

President’s Message We have some wonderful educational opportunities in Cache Valley. One recent event was a workshop on Feb 17 & 18 with Joseph Alleman. Joe uses a combination of “additive” and “subtractive” painting, that is, direct application of pigment, and lifting from a darker passage to produce a lighter image. We did an exercise where we painted a small piece of watercolor paper all over with a dark color and let it dry. Then we created an image totally by lifting color in areas we wanted to show the image we were trying to depict. A new experience for most of us, I think.. Phil Harrison

Sherrill says, "I use almost the same techniques that I use with watercolor. drybrush, washes etc. Special effects can be added using salt and or alcohol. The colors are brilliant and stay bright if you don't add too much water. It is so fun to watch the dye do it's thing! It can be dried and other layers added.”

In January, workshop attendees enjoyed instruction by silk artist Sherrill Gordon. What a fun way to make art! It is a beautiful water-based technique that uses many familiar techniques, and was rewarding for both experienced and newer artists.
