Welcome to week 7 of term1. I hope that you all enjoyed the beautiful weather over the long weekend. This Friday is our annual Ardrossan Area School Sports Day. Mr Andrew Lawless and his Sports Day Committee have been hard at work planning the day and preparing the Town Oval for the many events. The day will commence at the oval at 9:00am. I encourage parents and carers to attend and cheer their child/ren on. The Governing Council are organising and running the canteen on the day, however, they need volunteers to assist them. If you can spare as little as 30 minutes, this would be most helpful. Please let Marie Gorden know if you can help out by calling her on 0400 068 779. I would like to extend my thanks in advance to the Sports Day Committee, volunteer parents/carers, former students and our Governing Council members for their commitment to this important day. It is incredible to think we are rapidly approaching report time. In week 11, R to 6 teachers will hold parent/teacher interviews on Monday through to Wednesday. Our year 7 to 12 teachers will hold interviews on Wednesday and Thursday. Year 7 to 12 students will also receive full written reports at the end of term. If the scheduled days for interviews are not suitable, please contact your child/ren’s teacher/s to arrange an alternative time to discuss your child/ren’s progress. More information about reports will soon be sent home for your consideration. Parents of year 12 students, it is important to attend these interviews or make an alternative time to discuss your child’s progress. Year 12 students effectively have 3 terms and 2 weeks of official lessons before they begin preparing for the submission of their final assessments which may include an examination. It is important to be fully aware of how they are travelling after one term, so that any additional support at home and school can be discussed. Please make every effort to make contact with your child’s teacher/s. Next Wednesday night at 7pm in the library, the school will be hosting an information session on The Emotional Challenges of Primary Schooling. This session is aimed at parents of children aged 5 to 11. The session will also provide parents with the opportunity to hear about the Calm Kids Central online resources available to families for free until March 2019. A letter has been sent home for with all Reception to Year 4 students providing you with additional information about the session and the online resources. If you wish to hear about some ways you can support your child/ren to deal with feeling of anxiousness, frustration and disappointment, this would be a great way to spend an hour or so of your time next Wednesday evening. Kind regards, Karen Bond

Information regarding the Term One Student/Parent/Teacher interviews will be forwarded home on Monday 19th March. Interviews will be held on Monday 9th April, Tuesday 10th April and Wednesday 11th April. I strongly encourage all parents/caregivers to arrange a time to meet with your child/ren’s teacher/s to discuss term one progress and goals for term two.

NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will occur from the 15th – 17th May (Term 2 Week 3). NAPLAN is a nationally developed program that provides schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are administered simultaneously in all schools across Australia. The content of the tests are aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. NAPLAN tests are just one of the many ways we use to collect information about student learning. Whilst students do not have to learn specific skills for NAPLAN tests they will have an opportunity to become familiar with the NAPLAN tests and with ways of showing their answers before they do the tests. The individual student reports are expected to be ready for distribution to parents/caregivers during August and September. NAPLAN is moving to an online mode of testing from 2018. Whilst our school participated in the NAPLAN online trial previously we have not been selected to participate online this year. Further information for parents can be found at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support

Kind regards, Margaret
