Principal’s news

Welcome back Welcome back to Amy East. Amy has resumed the Deputy Principal role, following her maternity leave (we love seeing the photos of Amelia in Amy’s office!). Thank you to Cherie Beech for her work as Deputy Principal and to Bradley Channon for his work as B1 Leader Student Engagement and School Organisation, whilst Amy has been on leave. Thank you also to Leonie Peterson, Kylie Cook and Stephen Herreen who all increased their teaching allocations during the start of this year. A new timetable commenced Tuesday 9th March. All students have been provided with the updated timetable.

2021 AAS Athletics Carnival Perfect weather conditions and a fantastic effort from everyone involved combined to make the 2021 Athletics Carnival a great event. Congratulations to Vincent, individual age level winners and runners-up and to all participants. The team spirt demonstrated on the day was outstanding. Thank you to all the parents/community members who volunteered to assist with the running of the events and to our Governing Council for providing the BBQ. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to everyone who attended and cheered on the students throughout the day. Finally, thank you to Mr Brad Channon and the Sports Committee for all of their work. We now look forward to the interschool competitions in Week 9; Secondary at Moonta on Wednesday 24th March and Primary at Yorketown on Friday 26th March.

Traffic Lights and Term 1 Interviews Thank you to families who have provided some really positive feedback on the information which was shared via the 7-12 Traffic Lights. Traffic light information for students in years 1-6 will be forwarded home this week. The information provided for all year levels will provide the basis for the interviews in Week 8 (15th March – 18th March). Bookings for interviews are online this year through schoolinterviews.com.au Details regarding bookings is included on the traffic light information.

Early closure The Chief Executive has determined that early dismissal of students in government schools can be provided up to 1 hour before the end of the school day on the last school day before the Easter long weekend, and for no more than 4 times a year for the purpose of the end of school terms. With this advice, our Governing Council has approved the early dismissal of students at 2pm on Thursday 1st April (the last school day before the Easter long weekend) and for the last day of each school term in 2021: Friday 9th April, Friday 2nd July, Friday 24th September and Friday 10th December.

Kind regards, Margaret

Deputy Principal Hi all. I am excited to have commenced back at AAS last Thursday after completing my maternity leave. It has been fantastic to catch up with students and see the learning they have already completed in the first 6 weeks of 2021. Next week, in week 8, students and parents have the opportunity to meet with subject

teachers to discuss learning progress thus far in 2021. This is a fantastic opportunity, complemented by the Traffic Light Monitoring sheets distributed in week 6, to gauge where students are at and to determine next steps in the learning journey. Interview times with your child’s individual subject teachers can be booked online via the School Interviews website. If you are unable to attend these scheduled meeting times please do not hesitate to contact subject teachers at any time, via the school, to discuss your child’s progress.

I would also like to recognise the efforts of all staff and students who contributed to a very successful Athletics Carnival on Friday. Mr Bradley Channon and the Athletics Carnival Committee planned and executed a fun and competitive day and it was great to see so many students (both past and present) assisting with events and pack up on the day. I wish all students participating in the Primary Interschool competition at Yorketown Area School and Secondary Interschool event in Moonta in week 9 all the best.

After such a successful start to this year I am excited to be back on board. With many thanks, Amy East.

R-6 Leader

Mid-term progress ‘traffic light’ reports will be going home to Year 1-6 students this Friday, 12th of March. This information is an indication of your child’s progress midway through the term and will be used to support discussions at the interviews. Please discuss any concerns you have regarding this information at student learning conversations in the following week.

Information went home last week about Student Learning Conversations (interviews) which will be held in Week 8 (15th-17th of March). These can be booked online using the code provided in the letter. If you need this code again please contact the school. We have fixed a couple of minor issues with the system, particularly to allow parents to book with more than one teacher if required, this is now possible should you wish to do this.

A letter will be going home to families of Year 4-12 students regarding the Wellbeing Engagement Collection which will be happening in the next couple of weeks. The purpose of the survey is to seek students’ views about their wellbeing and their engagement with school. Students in year levels 4 to 12 across the State will be invited to participate in the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection. Please keep an eye out for this information. Kind regards, Deony Sims

Community Mentors at Ardrossan Area School

Community Mentors volunteer one hour per week to work with a student. Mentors are supportive, reflective, passionate and enthusiastic people, who are also good listeners, open to new ideas, role model a positive attitude and are comfortable with sharing. The mentor sessions provide an opportunity for students to ‘bounce’ ideas about their learning, leading to feedback, further planning and ultimately project presentations. We presently have 4 mentors who work with students from Year 4 to Year 6, who are matched according to interests. Some activities include art, craft, playing music, shooting hoops, cooking, playing card games and reading. Students benefit greatly from having a positive role model in their life. It often has a life-long impact improving a student’s self-esteem and confidence, peer relationships, social skills, communication, literacy and numeracy, and attendance at school. All mentors attend a Volunteer Session to ensure they comply with DfE screening standards. Find out more about volunteering at https://www.education.sa.gov.au/working-us/volunteers.

Where are they now? 'Where are they now?' Olivia Brown Class of 2009

What year did you finish at AAS? I finished at AAS in 2009, completing Year 12. What and where did you complete your study? I studied a Bachelor of Education (Primary/Middle) at the University of South Australia.

Did you always plan this pathway? I decided in Year 10 that becoming a teacher was what I wanted to do as a career, making choices in Year 11 and 12 to suit what I would need to be successful at university. Where has your study taken you and where are you currently working? I am now working full time at Memorial Oval Primary School in Whyalla in the Leadership Team as the Literacy and Numeracy Coordinator. In 2018 I was fortunate to win a full Department for Education Scholarship to complete my Master of Education, focusing on Numeracy Education. What are your career plans? After finishing my studies I started full time work in Whyalla (where I did my final placement) and won a permanent teaching position in the year following. From there I have completed further studies and moved into school leadership, something that I will continue to do in the future. A comment reflecting on your time at AAS? My time at AAS set me up to become the very best version of myself. I had numerous opportunities and experiences which allowed me to see all of the possibilities and options of what I can do when I finish school. I have always shared with my students all the fantastic teachers that I had at AAS and how I aspired to be like some of my fantastic teachers (Mr Edwards and Mr Carter) when I start teaching.
